I just started a job that requires me to be on my feet for 8 hours a day. I am not used to this and I come home every day hurting and sore from standing all day. What are some things I can do to help this? I am also having stiff and sore muscles. I have started doing yoga and other types of exercise to try and help this. What do you do?

i had this same problem as a security gaurd they wanted us to walk 10 miles in 8 hours which dont souns bad but thats up and down 9 buildings at 5 floors each it adds up all those stairs. But what i did is wait till we got an opening in the office and take that so I can be on here all day.

I've thought about trying to find another job. But, I love working in a bookstore. I'm hoping to work my way up to manager. Maybe even get a job at another store. I love books and reading.

I'm pretty lazy too. That's a bit part of what is bothering me so much. I've spent a long time sitting on my hind end for a living. Now I am on my feet so much more and walking a lot and bending and kneeling a lot too.

Make sure that your shoes fit correctly, and has a lot of cushioning in the sole. If you can get a rubber mat under foot, you can find it benefits you. I put capsaicin cream on achy sore spots, including the bottoms of my feet. I will also freeze a bottle and roll it under my feet. I think you will be getting more used to it and the stiff sore muscles will go away.

Thank you. I will try that!! :D
My main problem is that I have wide feet. And my smallest toe hurts a lot after wearing shoes that long. LOL

For your feet, get a good pair of running shoes. Sounds a little odd since you're standing and not running, but they have the best support. Think about it - a runner's feet are constantly slapping the pavement as they move, right? There's really good cushion and support in there to help keep your feet from being so sore. (I worked in a shoe store in high school and learned a few things)The sore muscles - stretching and strengh training exercises may help. Also, I'm sure it will ease off some once you get more used to the job.

Thank you for the info. I am hoping I can get used to it and not injure myself. That happened once when I was working in the mail room of a news paper. I thought my hands would get used to lifting and handling large stacks of newspapers. But, then I suffered a repetitive-movement injury. That probably won't happen again. But, it does make me worry a bit.
