Can you tell me how much I'll save now that my Fridge is no longer on Steroids?

I've been in my apartment less than a year, and I noticed things in my fridge have always been really cold. It didn't bother me because I usually didn't have much food in there, just bottles of water and some juice. But I noticed when I put my leftover soup in the fridge, by the next day, the liquid had congealed. So although I had never found the control for the temperature, I decided I was going to find it no longer how long it took (fridge came with place so I wasn't familiar with it). Long story short, it took some contorting (having a bad back was what kept me from contorting to see in the first place) but I found it.
It was half way between normal and coldEST. So it was way colder than it should have been, which I had figured. So I'm thinking now that I changed it to just normal, I might save a few bucks on my electricity bill. PLEAST NOTE I AM NOT THINKING DOING THIS WILL MAKE ME RICH! I am very well aware it will only save me a small amount. Plus it takes less energy. So I was wondering if someone could hazard a guess on how much I will save? 50 cents? A dollar? Two dollars? I know other factors have to be considered because every state is different on rates, but if anyone would like to give me a guess, I'm just curious. Maybe I'll buy me an ice cream cone! LOL
By the way, ever had your fridge freeze something that wasn't supposed to be frozen, like my congealed soup?

Hi Ambie,
Just today I actually turned up my freezer part. The fridge was fine, its on a normal setting keeps things fresh and cold. But my freezer was leaving my ice cream soft, and I hate that! I want my ice cream brick hard. lol
So I guess Ive probably increased my bill. I would think that you would save enough to rent a movie and some ice cream. hehe

Now I'm thinking something else might be wrong. Should my freezer have a control? It's small and not much is in it, but I didn't see a control. It doesn't make things get freezer burn or anything so I thought it was fine. I assumed the fridge control controlled the freezer too. Am I wrong? Someone save me from my incompetant self!

Oh Gosh, Ive caused you to panic! hehe Sorry!!
I think that some fridges will be controled by one thing. Just depends on the model I guess. If there is a control for the freezer, seperate from the fridge, it should be right there next to the one for the fridge. It its not, then there is a good chance that your freezer will adjust when you did your fridge.

I don't know how much it will save, probably somewhere in the neighborhood of what you said- enough to buy an ice cream cone. Check on your power company's website- they may have a list of how much energy appliances use. That would probably give you a pretty good idea of how much of a difference it will make. Also, refrigerators and freezers run more efficiently when they are full. So if you want to get a second ice cream cone to share with a friend, put more stuff in there. Even if it's just a couple of jugs of water to take up space, it should make a difference.

You have good advice. I just heard that thing about a full fridge the other day. I don't have enough money to fill the fridge even halfway full, but I bet I could find something to make it fuller. After all, the fridge can't tell the difference in what it is keeping cool. LOL, thanks!

I keep forgetting to take out my coke bottles out of freezer as I keep them there often for quickly getting them cold enough to drink well , coke looses its zing and my family rolls up there eyes and make a face that I really do not like. lol

hi Ambie. your action saving money will eventually make you rich or at least in better situation later on compared to those who don't. who cares what they think? you are the one paying bills every month so it's a good thing what you do to the fridge. It's freezing outside and we have an old freezer outside, so I'll unplug this freezer in winter. it won't harm whatever we put inside the freezer since our winter will take care of the rest :)

I couldn't tell you how much you would save at all. I have never figured the bills out but I know if I use the dryer less I see a difference.
As for things freezing I have had this happen lots of times. The boys when they were smaller loved buttons and pressing things. They would go in the fridge and turn the knob all the way. I have had milk and juice freeze. Also cheese spread and lettuce. I wouldn't notice they did anything until everything was frozen. Of course either one did it. GRR. I am glad they are out of that phase now.

I'm glad you found the control and turned it down. I'm not sure how much it will save you though. One time my mom's fridge kept turning the water into ice so when you opened a bottle of water to drink it was mostly ice. She turned hers down and it stopped turning everything into frozen things LOL. But I'm not real sure if it saved her anything or not.

Well the less food you have in the fridge the colder it stays. If the fridge is full its not as cold. I would imagine you could save 10$ amonth or so lowering the setting. If it dosent have to kick on so often it wont suck up so much power.

I went on vacation with my son's family and when they got to the cabin the refrig was warm so my son...being the intelligent person he is...turns it to the coldest setting....then proceded to fill the refrig...well everything froze...pop..eggs...it was a mess and we ended up replacing almost everything! It will be a good story to bring up at the family Christmas though! LOL

I don't know about your fridge, but ours has and energy rating sticker on it. the more stars it is the better the energy rating. This means it uses less energy and is better for the wallet and the enviornment. i am guessing you will save quite a bit now that you have fixed the temp. Any where upto 30%, depending on the temp of it now and the energy rating of the fridge.
Yes, we rented a place a little while back where the fridge kept freezing everything. Milk, butter everything! lol. Our landlord bought a new one and the problem was solved!
