$225 electric bill for October!

Does that seem horribly high to anyone else...$7.26 a day? My s/o's dad just got the bill for last month and that's what he says it was. Of course he's blaming it on the computer being on a lot but he has two freezers and one refrigerator running outside besides the regular one in the house (and they are all older models). Plus there's a pole light outside too. I think it's a lot of money but I doubt the blame can be placed on the computer considering everything else that's up here. How much are your electric bills and what major, extra things do you have running?

Our first was around $180 and we have just one bedroom apartman. It was really high to me. we have just one refrigerator and one freezer. Also my fiancee said it was because computer , but I won't believe it. now when we don't use our air conditoning that much, the bill went to $125. So I think the main expense was for ac. Also I think it is still too much, since we are only two in the apartman, so how much we can spent? But also here in MAryland is everything so expensive.

I have heard that about Maryland. My s/o's brother lives ther with his wife and children. A/C definitely does cost a lot to run and I hope you can figure out if there's more you can do to get your bill a little lower.

Wow. I do think that's a lot for the electric bill AND I agree with you, it's probably not just the computer. Our bill is usually 50-60 dollars/month and that includes our computer ALWAYS being on. I live in a 3 bedroom house with a stove, refrigerator, washer, dryer.. etc.

That sounds like a really reasonable bill! I could handle something like that...just goes to prove that the computer can't cost that much to have on.

My last bill gave me a heart attack, it was $760.00, admittingly it was winter and we just got a new air conditioner, so it was on all the time, it seemed a bit too much though ??

Um I can't write what came to mind when I saw this. We might pay that much for a entire year. But ut doen't get overly hot here and we use a wood stove when it's cold.

My eyes are still popping out of my head after reading $760! That is definitely a bill I'd look into to make sure it was accurate! I can't imagine...

Based on what yo explained, it is those refrigerators and freezers are eating those electricity. How could he blame that on the PC? by the way, my monthly bill for electricity is only about 1/8 of that. LOL!

Oh, goodness! That sounds SO expensive. Our electric bill is around €50 per month...so around $60, I guess. We have two computers on almost 24/7 and nowadays since it's dark outside, two lamps are on almost 16 hours a day. Plus I cook at home (we use an electric stove, microwave, etc.) almost daily and we have one fridge and a small freezer which are on all the time. I hope your electric bill next month can be WAY cheaper than that!

You sound like you have normal usage. I think our bill would be much lower without all that extra stuff running all the time. I'll unplug it all once he leaves for the winter, that should make a big difference.

Yep, s/o's parents are supposed to be leaving for the winter at least. Ultimately we are buying the place when they retire and star travelling all the time.

So he's going to leave later on? That's good then since you can unplug all the extra stuff. :-)))) Have a WONDERFUL holiday season! ;-D

I don't know where you live or what the average electric cost is there, but I know we wouldn't be able to afford a bill that high! Our last electric bill was $50 or so. During the summer, it was never higher than $80. And our hot water heater and stove are both electric. Our house is about 1500 sq. ft. And we leave TWO computers on all the time. We also have at least one TV on just about all the time (my toddler gets up and turns his on when he wakes up during the night). We also have two refrigerators and a big freezer, but they are all over half full at just about any given time. They were all also made within the last five years and are energy efficient. We also have things like the washer, dryer, stove, microwave, TV's, phones, etc that are plugged in all the time.

It's been awhile since I had an electric bill so I really don't know what is average anymore. I know 10 years ago I had a two story, 3-4 bedroom house and $80 was HIGH, it was normally around $60 tops, but we also ran propane on the furnace, water heater, and stove and didn't have a dryer. We had porch lights and two tv's on constantly plus an old microwave and washer AND a pole light in the back yard.

Our bill for October was $206. I blame the warmer temperatures. Our normal high for yesterday is around 67 and yesterday it was 82. The normal low for yesterday is around 46 and it was 63 yesterday. This morning, our weather man was on and said that the normal high for this date is 65, at 8am we had already passed it. We have about 5 weeks till Christmas and our temperatures are in the low 80s!! I wore shorts and a sleeveless top today while buying the food for Thanksgiving. We aren't even runnign the A/C we are using box fans and the bill was still almost as high as it was in July.

Wow, well now I don't feel quite so bad! It was an unusually warm October but we weren't running the a/c either. I don't like really hot weather but I wouldn't mind if we didn't get the bitter cold winter weather.

Just a little info from someone that has worked with the Gas and electric Company. First off heating and energy prices are on the rise, which contributes to the higher bill. If your s/o's insists on having all those Refrigerators and Deep Freezers running, let him know that a full one costs less to run than a half full one, so if he can transfer all the stuff to one, and pull the juice on the other, that will save him some money. Last, Private Outdoor Lights (POLs) are put onto a separate bill than the rest of the house, so that may not be part of the reason the bill is so high. At any rate, make the computer the last thing on the list, we all have to visit mylot, right?

I don't think it is the computer being on. Because even computers when left idle will go to power saving mode. Refrigerators, freezers and pole lights take more energy because one they are bigger appliances and two as you said are older and not as energy efficient.

Thanks mamasan! That's exactly what I think too! Our computer doesn't even get to go idle hardly ever because if we so much as get up to use the bathroom he'll come over and turn it off!

that is funny! hahaha! Men have a one track mind! If they believe it, it's true and there is nothing you can do to change their minds until they see the proof right there in their face. I know, I have a husband myself hahhaha!

yeah that is WAY to much money!!! My computer is on 24/7 and my hubby also has the TV on all night long while we sleep. And our bill is never higher than $120.00. This includes all major appliances including washer/dryer. And also having a light happy 4 year old!!! LOL

my guess on this would be the old refrigerators....that is based on past experience. Also dryers run alot of electricity. Shutting down the computer will save you some but it is very minimal...it is more than likely the old appliances that are running the electric bill up.

I didn't even think about the dryer when I started the discussion. We have 8 people living here so the dryer is running constantly. I'd rather line dry but until it's actually MY house I just follow their rules.

The main thing that runs up my bill is air conditioning. I do not believe the computer is making up a significant charge on the bill in question. The older appliances probably eat up the most but all in all it's heating and air conditioning that run up most people's bills.

We didn't run the a/c and our heat isn't electric but you're right about those tings running up bills. It's got to be just the extra older appliances he insists on having.

That is very cheap for an electric bill. Our's usually runs between $375 and $420, depending on the weather. In the summer time and winter time, it is always this high. In spring and fall, it is usually around $290. I have checked with the electric company and they say if you leave the computer on all the time, it takes up less electricity than if you have to keep turning it on. If your freezers are half full, it takes up more electricity than if it was full.

Wow! There's no way we could afford that on a regular basis!. It always bugs me how he's constantly turning t off rather than just leaving it on for 5 minutes while we use the bathroom or get a drink. It starts up so slow, that it takes longer to get back to what we were doing on it than what ever we had to go do for those few minutes.

i am really wondering how come your bills happened to be so high.anyway i dont think computer will increase the bill to such an extend it must be other accesories that will be the right culprit.anyway you take care that next time you dont get such high bills and i hope the problem will be solved.

I hardly use any electric myself so there's nothing I can do to lower the bill. Once he is gone for the winter his stuff will be getting unplugged though.

well yes thats a lot of money for sure but it can not all be because of computers. I had a high bill but it was due to geyser that I kept on when I had the baby. I need hot water a lot so I kept it on. My hubby also keeps cribbing about that but what could I do. I just needed that in those days. Some times you just have to turn away and let the other person do the cribbing.

Especially since we only have one computer. I'm not the one that has to pay it so he can grumble all he wants. It's his fault it's so high anyway!

And friend, i pay electric bill bi monthly in my town, and it comes to around Rs 500/- (Indian Rupees) So working for a day it comes about 8.33 rupees. LOL: You pay in dollars and myself in Indian rupees, that is the difference. The television in my house used to run almost, 10 hours a day,and the Electric motors that used to pump up the water, rest like heater, refridgerators, and other electrical appliances add up to the bill. Oops.., i failed to add my usage of pc.. nearly 5 hours a day.

That sounds a little steep for October. Where I live it hasn't been that cold yet. Mine wasn't ever that high during the summer running the air conditioner. I have to agree the computer isn't going to make an electric bill that high.

I doubt they'll call. They'll just blame the computer and accept the bill. It probably is right, just not because of the computer.

I doubt that the computer is using that much energy! I would guess it is the older model freezers. Does he really need them? If they are not full they don't run as efficiently, so that would cause them to use more energy. Look on your power company's website. They may have a list of what different appliances use. You could show that to your father in law, to let him know where all the juice is going. This time of year, my bill is usually around $75, so that bill seems completely outrageous to me. But we have a small home and only 3 people, so that makes a difference.

Only one freezer gets used regularly, the other freezer and refrigerator are just "ready if he needs them". I think it's really stupid. I'll look up appliance usage for my own curiosity but he won't listen to reason.
