When Is The Best Time To Exercise?

Do you exercise in the morning or in the evening? Does your schedule determine when you exercise or do you routinely schedule your life around exercising? Does that make sense? Or . . . is there a better time to exercise according to doctors? Is it medically speaking better to exercise after dinner or before breakfast? Ah, enquiring minds would like to know, and my aching muscles.

I heard that working out in the morning before your daily activities start is the best time to burn calories. I also noticed that when I worked out during the mornings, my muscles didn't hurt so much in the mornings after I went to sleep.

Sounds like most of us are morning people. I feel more awake in the morning, how 'bout you. And having less pain in the muscles is a plus. I am hoping that exercise will help with better sleep patterns. That is something I am looking forward to.

I do light exercise in the morning. I think that morning is the best time to exercise, when you can inhale plenty of oxegen and it helps in opening of lungs. I think exercise should be done atleast half an hour before taking any meals/breakfast. It is not advisable to go for exercise immediately after meals.

I love morning workouts better too. Why is it not advisable to exercise immediately after a meal though?

I always exercised after a meal and primarily because I don't eat much. I think doctor's prefer you do it before meals and drink plenty of water. I haven't been able to do much for about two months in terms of exercising. Have a back issue going on and it's limited my working or exercising activities.

I'm learning to eat much less and much better. The drinking water is still an issue for me. I can't seem to drink the required amount per day. Really hope and pray that your back will start feeling better soon.

I don't exercise. I know I should be. The only exercise I kind of like is walking. It varies as to when I will walk, if I am into it. It depends on the weather. In winter late afdternoon is good. In summer, It would be night time.

I excercise whenever I get the chance. I sometimes get up 30 min early to walk on the treadmill before work. That puts me getting up at 5am. I like to workout though. It makes my whole day go better. I have more energy and all that.

I really do wish I could get up at 5am to work out. My body seems to be stuck to the bed at that time of day. But you're right, it's a great start to anyone's day.

I have found that the best time for me to exercise is right now!! I am a master at finding excuses to not exercise, so any time is a good time.

I feel the best time to excercise is in the morning.its the time when we are fresh and new ,so when we do excercise in the morning it energises our body and gives us the motivation to work hard in that particular day.if we excercise in the evening ,we would already be tired.so when we go for excercise when we are already tiredness it would just increase our tiredness and would have the negative effect.

I think for me the best time to exercise is in the evening.. I can't exercise in the morning, as I am quite lazy in the morning.. I also wake up late.. So, I prefer exercizing in the evening... And do note that u shud never exercise after having ur meals, u shud always do it before the meals.. And u shud keep atleast an hour of time gap in between...

I think this is up to you. If you have time in the morning then you can exercise. It is good that once in a week you will try to exercise, you know good for you, because me, im so very busy so i don't have a time for exercise. I just stretch my arms and legs whenever i wake up and at the office.

I tend to exercise about an hour after lunch, when I've finished my work, as then I know I can lend more time to the exercising, and I've got nothing to distract me. I don't know if this is good, health-wise, or if I should be leaving more time for my food to digest, but it's the way I fit my exercise in, and I think it really should be about how practical it is for you, surely?

Morning after breakfast. That's when its best for me. Especially for swordplay. Of course I do the normal exercises then too. I also do them at night sometimes if the weather is good enough.

I personally prefer to exercise in the morning. By the end of the day, I've normally run out of energy after chasing around the kinder and grade one kids all day. If I skip my morning exercise and say I'll do it at the end of the day, I know that I won't.
In response to your aching muscles comment, do you do a proper warm up and warm down? I know that when I don't take the time to do those, I end up much sorer than when I actually do my exercise routine properly, and spend at least five minutes before and after doing some stretching exercises.

When I hear myself say "I'll do it at the end of the day," it never happens. And my aching muscles thank you. I am very bad with the warm up and cool down part of exercising. I forget to stretch because I'm always thinking about what needs to get done for the day. I'll have to do better. Thanks for the input, hope you have a wonderful day.

If you can work out in the morning you can set yourself up for a nice pace through out the day. Working out makes you feel good all day long so i'd rather work out in the mornings if your schedule allows it. I use to work at a gym that was open 24 hours and i worked the night shift. I would see the same people everyday and amazingly enough they would sign in every morning within seconds of the last three days and i know this because the computer kept track of the last three times they were keyed into the system. I think that you're schedule becomes much more concrete and you become more disciplined.

If you just want to burn more calories it's best to exercise in the morning, your body is more energised which means that you will have a more intense workout than one in the evening, your metabolic rate will stay higher throughout the day too which in turn will burn further calories. For guys their testosterone levels are higher in the mornings too so they should be able to lift more or train longer :) So I guess mornings are best but not always convenient.

That makes a whole lot of sense, my friend. I guess I do feel more energized in the morning. Plus no one is home to make fun of me then. And I definitely need something to boost my energy throughout the day. Thanks for the advise.

early in the morning since it kick starts your metabolism, gives you vigor and energy for the rest of the day, and you burn a lot more calories that way

I've heard a lot of conflicting info on this. I would say just do whatever works and feels good to you. Some people say do it in the morning when you're most energized, others say don't do it in the morning eause your muscles won't be warmed up yet. Some say do it at night so when you body temperature drops bak to normal you will sleep better, others sa don't do it at night beause it releases to much of he chemical that will keep you awake. Ive heard pro's and con's for early afternoon exercising, late afternoon exercising and any other time frame you could come up with!
My common sense guess is that you should do it around the time energy from a meal kicks in, after your body is warmed up and before you get too tired lol...I haven't done a real work out in a LONG time but I like doing mine at night.

Yes, there does seem to be a lot of conflicting info on this. I think for me, the morning is best since I won't have enough time to talk myself out of exercising. Psychologically, it makes me feel like I've started the day out on a good note, so to speak. This week I've been good, let's hope I can keep this up.

I personally like to exercise first thing in the morning. It's something that I like to get out of the way, because I know I will be too tired and unmotivated to do it in the evening. Fortunately, my schedule allows me to exercise in the morning. If that were not the case, I hope that I would have the self-discipline to exercise later in the day or evening. I know it can be difficult.
A good friend of mine likes to go jogging, but only when the sun is still shining. During the summer, he runs after work. During the winter, however, it's dark by the time he gets home. He has a hard time motivating himself to run when its dark (or, conversely, to join a gym), however, and, as a result, tends to gain weight during the winter. But I digress. Thanks for a great discussion

From what I have read, doing exercise is not adviced to be done at night. It has something to do with having difficulty to sleep well after doing exercises.
A friend explained to me that doing exercises should be done when our bodies are prepared and in good condition. Doing exercises with an empty stomach isn't ok. Because we do need the energy to perform those exercises. But if after having eaten a meal, we should allow a couple of hours for the food to be digested. So, we won't end up stomach pains.

Hello, hoe gaat het met de spierpijn?LOL. Ik ken het gevoel.
I am suppose to excerise everyday at least 5 min, in the morning and in the evening. Because of my back.
But I found something better.
I found a fitness program called Pilates All In One Workout.
Yoga,tái chi (whatever that is),Classic and arobic dance, precision sculpting and Joseph Pilates (don´t know him either,LOL)
It is a DVD.
I did not ask a dokter, I figured they were killing my back more then helping it.
I went to a therapie of 3 hours, and saw all these fitness equipments and decided it was time to start moving some more. Befor I gain even more then these 5 kilo´s!
This method is slow, no rough stuff. My muscels were real sore. But my back and legs were as new born for three whole days! That was last week, still have to do it a second time. But know my back is hurting again and I keep putting it off until tomorrow.LOL
Okay, I will do it tomorrow!!! Then I will feel better.
Anyway as for your questions. Mornings is the best time to exercise. Some say it is better on an empty stumik.
I myself think a light breakfast is very good befor doing sports. Otherwise I can´t keep up.
I eat then wait 30 to 60 min and do my sports.
Right now I don´t have an exercise scedual as I never know how I am going to wake up the next morning. But I want to be able to exercise every morning except in the weekend.
But, I need to build it up.
I told my dokter what I had done, she said it was great!
So if you don´t want to do what the dokter says ,( like me), tell the dokter at least what it is you are doing.
I believe people know there own bodies beter then anybody else.
What kinds of exercises are you doing?
Take care.

Alles is goet hier en de spierpijn is nog en beetje. I actually have the first Pilates dvd. It's the one where they show you how to breathe. I should do that again.
That's a great exercise plan you've got going. Hope I can put my plan into action also. Right now I'm just walking on the treadmill for 45 minutes. Lifting weights for another 15 minutes and then sit ups so I can get my six-pack back, lol! Thanks Marga for dropping by. Here's to our health.

15 min lifting weights, that is alot!
LOL, You have the Pilates too!
It is great, not to stress full.
Better for my back.
I am going to do it in half an hour.
I have been behind the computer and did the dishes.
I have to lay down for 30 min. Then I will do my Pilates.
To Health!!!!

There's more oxygen in the evening? That's weird. Hope it's true--more oxygen has to be good for all those muscles.
