Can you smell that first snowfall of the season

Way back a long, long time ago, I had a roommate from Vermont. We were living in Virginia. And I walked out one night and said "It smells like snow" She got all excited, because she too can smell that first snow fall and so many people said they could not.
Can you smell it? Does it make you happy or sad? Have any idea what causes it?

Yup I can smell it too. We love the smell even though I don't like to drive or shove the stuff. It is a crispy cool smell that makes me think of the holidays. Nice.

It doesn't make me think of the holidays..usually it is way too early for that. But it does make me realize that time goes on, we can't stop it. Now I smell snow and love it, see snow and enjoy it. But that first warm day of spring feels so good. It is only 4 months away..but it seems so far away as I see the oil truck driving down the driveway every few weeks.
Driving I don't mind. We had slush this morning. I have about a 23 mile drive to work. In the last 4 miles of it..I saw 3 accidents. My partner said he saw 3 accidents on one road coming in from the other direction.
I still like it.

Not so fast. I have often smelled the coming of snow. The air is thick and dense and penetratingly cold. But I don't want to smell it until mid January....lol. I think we should keep the snow in Florida ths year. Just to change things up a little.

I don't know about Florida..we would not get any oranges to eat...it can stay in the carolinas. It can give them a little excitement and give us a break.

Yes, I can smell the snow storms arriving before they arrive. We have already had snow last week. It did not amount to much but it did snow. I love to see the snow but I hate winter. I dont like the cold.

I don't mind the snow as long as it stays in double digits..when it goes down to single digits and there is a wind then it is too cold.

I can smell it. I love smelling it. Usually when I say "smells liket snow" people look at me like I"m nuts. I've explained to a couple of people what it smells like as best I can, but they don't get it. A few nights ago I was outside on the porch and I could smell it. I was standing there with my head thrown back sniffing the air as hard as I could. Someone came by and was like "what are you doing?" I told him I smelled snow and he was like "it's not going to snow." I was like "no, not here... in the mountains. It's gonna snow in the mountains." I'm in Denver, so the mountains are close enough that I can smell it when they're gonna get it. Sometimes I can't tell if we're gonna get it or if the mountains are gonna get it, but usually I can.

You have had the same experience with people thinking you are weird. The strange thing is that I don't have a good sense of smell.
We must be among the gifted

I hope it doesn't snow here. People are idiots when it comes to driving on the show. There is always that one moron with a 4x4 truck that thinks just because his truck is 4x4 that he can drive 50 on the ice and snow and be fine.
He's also the same idiot that about a mile down the road, is in the ditch with his truck flipped over and he's scratching his head wondering why it happened. After all, his truck is 4x4.
I don't like it when it snows. It's pretty to look at and it is so much fun to have snowball fights and just play in it, but it makes driving a disaster. It doesn't snow here a lot, but when it does, the whole state is shut down.

What state do you live in?
I understand about the jerk in the 4 x 4...those things can go, but you should try with the same speed and caution as the rest of us lowly mortals without the 4 wheel drive.
Actually, my next vehicle will be an SUV - where I work it is rural (and this is an understatement) and hilly and there are lots of one lane roads, the 4 wheel drive will make my life much easier.

I live in Arkansas -- close to Memphis. We don't get a lot of snow. We did get a bit last year in January, but it didn't last long.

Whether it's because of the onslaught of global warming but here in the UK we don't have many snowfalls, and certainly the last white Christmas which we would love to have hasn't happened since the 70s. I love the smell of snow, mother nature at her best and being out in a snowstorm is wonderful, yes we have a reason to get excited in the UK as it doesn't snow very often, if at all.

Aww, Wolfie, that is too bad. Snow is one of nature's best gifts to us. It changes our world. It gives us a fresh start.
