In Canada we use 911. However the only time they ever responded to it with me was when my then 4 year old son called it one day to show me he knew how to get help in an emergency. I told the operator it was a mistake but they still came to the house just in case. But the other times I REALLY NEEDED help they didn't come. The police are losers here.

here in the UK we have several numbers for the police (this may actually come as a suprise to some people lol). 999 is the main number that everyone knows, but that is actually just the emergency services control centre phone number. if you need emergency police, ambulance or fire services this is the number you call. however, if it is non emergency, local police stations have their own numbers and they can be found in the yellow pages or local phone books. also if you call the emergency services from a mobile (cell) phone, the number is 112, this is the only number that can be dialed on a mobile that has the keypad "locked" (locked in the sense that if it is in your pocket or bag ect... then it wont dial numbers when they are pressed by accident). so depending on what your needs are and whether you are calling from a mobile or land line, the numbers differ.

In the USA we dial 911. Each town pretty much has their own police station with their own direct telephone number so if it's not an emergency than dialing the direct telephone number for your police station is usually the thing to do. But in the case of an emergency, accident, robbery, etc. 911 is our police and they will dispatch it to the local authorities.
