I have never used disk defragmenter. I use disk clean up all of the time. Do you use it? If so why do you use it?

I run a defrag at least once a month. I find that doing so helps keep the computer running smoothly and keeps it from slowing down.

yes i use it often it really helps in optimizing the speed of your hard drive ti works on a great concept whenever we scan for defragmented files in the computer the files which it shows as fragmented are the one which are difficult to access by the computer so whenever we give a command regarding those files it takes some time to locate them but when we defregment the files what it do is it arranges the files so that they are easily accessible and the work is done the performance of your computer increases so the advice s to defregment hard drive once in a week or if not then at least once in am month

I do it sometimes, when I first got my computer I was told by the tech to do it once a month at least as it joins up the gaps and your computer doesn't have to work so hard to find space so when I remember I do it..

Linux Penguin OS needs no Defragging... - Penguins are also safer when dealing with iffy neighborhoods on the Internet as they are less prone to viruses and crap attacks.
I rarely use Windows XP's Disk Defragger because I rarely use Windows XP. I usually use Linux which doesn't get fragmented. Nor does it get cooties like Windows does, it's required as I sometimes go into 'iffy' neighborhoods...

you should use it once in a while. Disk cleanup will only delete entries in your hard drive. Disk defragmenter will make file accessing faster since it will group together files that are accessed a lot. its like this: a certain file may be huge in size so it will be divided into several storage areas in your hard drive. Normally it will fill up on a sequence of 1,2,3,4,5 and so on. however, if a file is deleted, the area it uses is now empty so next time a new file is added, it will start in the empty location example, file a is stored in areas 1,2,3 and file b is stored in 4,5,6, and file c is in 7,8,9. if you delete file b, 4,5,6 is now empty once again. then you add file d which is huge in size so it takes up more space (lets assume it will take 4 areas), it will take in the empty ones first 4,5,6, then the next available is now 10. if you access file D, your computer will need to read through areas 4,5,6 then 10 to access the file. this means it will have to read 7,8,9, as well before it can get to 10 now take the example and multiply it several times to represent the number of files deleted and added. accessing files make take a long time already. this is where disk defragmenter will help. it will rearrange the file grouping so accessing a file becomes faster. in the example, disk defragmenter will put file d in 4,5,6,7 and move file c to 8,9,10

Thanks for your very detailed information. I like when someone can explain so I can draw a picture in my mind of how it works. I will definately start doing it...the first time I do mine it will probably take forever since I have never done one on my computer...lol. At least I've only had it 5 or 6 months as opposed to 5 or 6 years. Have a great day.

Yes, I use disk deframenter once a month or when I feel that my PC is slowing down too much.. Due to files swapping - copying, pasting, deleting, creating new files....fragmentation occurs...This means that whenever there is space on the hard drive, a created or pasted new file is split to fit any space there are on the hard drive...Therefore, if you want to read a particular file, the hard drive has to search for the pieces of file in various locations in the hard drive to get a complete file....This leads to slowness of the system especially when there are so many files in your hard drive at many locations.. Through defragging, it clears these space and compact the files such that reading them would be a lot faster

I use it once in a fortnight. I think it is very very effective and it is very very useful. I think we all computer users should do it to achieve the optimum performance of our computer and see to it that our computer is working fine.

I have worked on computers that hadn't been defragged in years, and the before/after performance difference is striking. Also, from experience, it is easier for a computer to overcome disk problems from a power failure or the like if the files aren't fragmented, so yes it is a good thing, though the first time you do it may take a LONG time, several days if it is in bad shape actually. I use disk defragmenter on my Windows syatems, but defragmenting is unnecessary in Linux due to the file layout or something... I don't know about Macs however.

I use both Linux and Windows operating systems. Linux uses a file system (ext3 file system) that is designed in a way that it is not necessary to use disk defragmenter. When I use windows I sometimes use windows defragmenter to speed up a bit my pc. I don't usually use disk clean up tools neither with Linux and windows.

Oh yes dayzz, use your disk clean and defragmenter as frequently as needed! The defragmenter doesn't have to be defragmented as often, it'll tell you if it needs it or not! But the scan disk you can use it frequently without any problem!

yes i do use disk defragmenter. it helps to manage and arrange the files with usage of minimum spaces. when we save files it is not always arranged effectively i nthe drives. disk defragmenter helps to manage this. Disk cleanup only cleans up the unwanted files. but remember while using defragmenter net shouldn't be activated to avoid invasion of viruses.

Yes if you want to have a longer life for you hard disk and better performance then I think it is better have your disk get defragmenter because it will organize the files on the disk properly and that reduces the reader to read a lot more and that will make you save time in accessing the data from the hard disk and that is the important thing about the performance.

I don't use Windows Disk Defragmenter, but I do use Raxco PerfectDisk. A defragmenter and a disk cleaning utility are two different things. A disk defragmenter locates files on the drive that are not contiguous, and defragments them. A drive cleaner deletes unneeded files (some cleaners can wipe the files completely).

I've never used it, but I think my husband has. I think he only uses it when he's on a major wipe project.

When we used to play graphic intensive games we had to defrag about every 3 weeks. We could see the file pattern scattered everywhere. But now the defrag program says that my pc does not need defraging, even after 2 month - 3 months, everday use. I suspect in part, because we hardly play any games, just emails, word typing, and internet browsing...
