A girl thought she had a new friend on myspace and talked back and forth for a month. When the boy broke it off telling her he had heard she was cruel, the girl hung herself. Apparently the boy was not really a boy, but a group of people from this girls neighborhood who created the fake profile on myspace. The parents hope they can be prosecuted so kids can be protected, but the incident doesn't quite fall into a specific law, so officials aren't sure what is going to happen.

Legally they can't prosecute the group of kids since she killed herself of her own free will. But it is wrong what the kids did though. I find it strange the girl would kill herself just because the boy said she was cruel. If there are really sensive people in this world does that mean there are guillible people in the world too?

Evidently some of you did NOT read or hear this news.
It wasn't children, teens or any young person doing this...
it was a GROUP of ADULTS pretending to be a boy who had interest
in the girl to find out what she was posting on MySpace about one
of their daughters. They even knew she was under the care of a doctor
for depression because they lived in the same area and knew her family.
You can not trust what anyone says on the Internet and especially in places
like MySpace. I don't think MySpace is any place for a young 13 year old girl
to be in the first place. Her parents should not have let her join or spend time in a place like that. It's a melting pot for trouble.

I was just reading an article about that this morning. It is so sad. It is really awful how mean some people can be, playing with other people's emotions that way, especially when the girl was already struggling with depression. I feel so bad for the family.

They interviewed the parents on the Today show this morning. It was not only kids, it was a whole family. The parents of those kids were doing it. Those people should be held liable for something. I don't think murder, but internet harrassment, or something to do with harming a child. I cannot believe that any parent would do such a thing, especially to a neighbor. They is a new law that is getting people for harassing children. I hope it does some good.

As tragic and horrible as this is...IMO there is no blaming the other kids..Yes what they did was awful and they should be punished by their parents but the truth of the matter is, chances are VERY SLIM that this girl killed herself over this...I would however want these kids investigated as far as being bullies goes though...not just online but off line as well...at school, in the neighbourhood and so on becuase I'd doubt very much that this is the first time these kids were vicious to someone...

I really can't understand how adults can sink this low. Children are supposed to be protected by adults and they should know, that even without any mental problems a teenager is specifically vulnerable.
i would have understood (but NOT accepted!) if it had been a group of teenagers, but adults sink this low is pathetic. I think they should receive punishment for this. It just isn't right that the poor girl was made suffer like this, that eventually she took her own life.
Just my views of this.

I see two sides to this description of what happened. First the whole thing with having children on a place where grown people can do and say what they please is pretty weird to me. My older than 18 year olds have a myspace but we do not allow the younger ones on there.
The next thing is that the girl obviously had personal problems that the children playing the joke may not have seen but it is definitely not there fault either. Yes, what they did was cruel and mean but it was (I am sure) not their intention that she should die. Prosecuting them is clearly not the answer.
Myspace itself should restrict access to children by making the legal age 18 unless you have parental consent and if they are under 18 then they should have a seperate site dedicated to friends there age.
When does the company take responsibility and the parents take responsibility for what goes on with there children. What else must happen before they take control of what the children are allowed to view on Myspace.

I saw that in the paper the other day and it was really sad what happened. That was very cruel of those people to do that to her and give her false hope. This is why we should not trust people so much when we are online. You never know who is on the other end of the computer. I feel sad for her and her parents after hearing this and hope that those people do get prosecuted. She would probably still be alive today had they not done that to her.

It seems that it wasn't just other kids who created and corresponded with this girl under the false profile of Josh Evans. It was a girl's mother also. As the victim's mother said "But when adults are involved and continue to screw with a 13-year-old, with or without mental problems, it is absolutely vile,".
It is at the very least, dishonest and fraudelent to pretend to be a boy interested in a girl. The poor child's self esteem was obviously destroyed by the rejection from her "friend".
I don't think that the kids are responsible but I do think the adult who was involved should take some responsibility. Whether this involves a legal penalty or not, we shall see.

It sounds like bullies are now using the internet. This is just the beginning.Pretty soon there will be an incident where a student attacks the school somehow because of MySpace emails, real or fake, from a certain student from that school. Or worst, the student or loved ones of the bullied person will take the law into their own hands and search out the sender and harm or even kill them.

They are cyber-bullies. If kids bullied her face to face and something like that happened..would it be a crime. Would they be help accountable? I would think the same rules should apply to cyber-space.
Technology is changing too fast for the laws.

Adults are even worse, the whole thing is terrible that an adult would do that to a kid..that is mental abuse.

I believe that it is cruel to lie, sometimes it is necessary so we don't hurt anybody, but then again we still owe them explanation in the end. what these people did was cruel. they made someone, a young girl, to believe she had found love (well, we will call it crush, but for her it must have been love) and then used it to break her heart.
I wouldn't kill myself just because someone said I was cruel, but when I was her age my mind was focused on freedom that I would achieve by finishing school and earn my own money. Finding "love" might be the only thing this girl wanted at the time, and she was manipulated by a group of irresponsible people. If there is no law to prevent this from more deceits happening online, the lawmakers should invent one very soon.

That's just plain sick and sadistic. The mother who created the fictitious profile claims she created it so she could see what Megan was saying about her child online??? Why does it matter? I hope she feels much better about herself for causing so much pain and anguish to a young girl and her family.

MY question where was the parents in all of this? Why wheren't they monitoring their daughter' activities on the internet.
I raised my kids in the time before myspace I guess I was lucky.
I think this girl had depression problems to begin with and this just pushed her over the edge.

wow, I just find it so hard to believe that people can get into the computer all like that. Like fall for a person they never met and have only talked to on the computer
This group of people were very cruel to do this to this girl. I'm sure they were not thinking it would have caused this much damage though.

What a sad story. How disgusting that adults were involved in this hoax. They should be deeply ashamed of themselves although if they are cruel enough to do such a thing in the first place it's unlikely they will have much of a conscience anyway. I hope they find something to prosecute them for.
On a general point though I wish parents would wise up about MySpace and kids spending unsupervised time online. The internet is full of weirdos and misfits and places like MySpace are a haven for them.

It's such a shock that people fall prey so easily to unknown person. What has happened is too sad and the people who prompted the girl to do such act should be punished. May be they did this due to some grudge on the girl.

Well that was a awful prank to pull on that poor girl, but i do not think that the parents will be able to prosecute though, really it was just a cruel act..not really murder...If you killed yourself every time someone did you wrong, wouldn't be too many people around...We live in a world where there are very cruel people, and we have to learn to cope...I feel so sorry for this girls Mom and Dad and other family members, and i can understand that they are very hurt, angry and want to do something about this, but actually i don't think they will do anything...I personally believe the girl who hung herself had more problems other than these vinsictive kids on myspace.

It just like something happens in a film. It's incredible.
But it's true that sometimes things can not fall into a specific law. That's terrible.
