I don't believe that Vitamin C cures colds, I believe that it prevents colds. Everybody has vitamin C when they are cold but I think that is does not do some difference. You have to prevent with vitamin C, to do this you have to eat fruits that contains vitamin C like lemon, orange, acerola... And have a lot of citric fruit juice: the best one to prevent flu.

i thought so too. until my 3 ear old daughter had this cough and i did not take her to a pediatrician or gave her an over-the-counter medicine but only her vitamin c and i gave her a double dosage compared to her usual intake but her cough only worsen that when we took her to a doctor she suffered pneumonia.

I believe totally in that. More so than popping in antibiotics and drowsy-causing tablets for the colds, coughs and flu. I believe it is better to naturally heal and let my body fight the virus itself than to become reliant on medicines. Afterall, Vitamin C is harmless and it is soluble in water. So, if you happen to have too much of it, it just passes out of your body.

well you know my son has been trying to convince me that we have so much vitamin c in our diet that if I was to take a supplement I would just be wasting my money on the extra vitamin c that the body can not utilize anyway.
I went ahead and this past winter I started taking the chewable vit. c tablets - (I figured *shrug* at least they taste good even if they do not work*) and I do not know if they are the reason or not but I did not get a single cold all winter long.... other members of my family (such as the scoffer, ahem) did get colds.

Hi noriko,
Vitami C will not cure cold. Take it granted. But why Vitamin C is being advised may be your question?. Well Vitami C is to Imrove Immunity of your body to diseases. Some doctors are there, who will precribe vitamin C for cold if you say you are frequently getting cold.
But remeber Cold is mostly allergic reaction and some times you get it because if Virus infection. If it is due to allergic you can use any anti-cold tablets, if it is due to Viral Infection you have to visit a doctor.
However please note excessive usage of vitamins is also not good, they lead to a diseases called Vitaminosis.
So, do not use Vitains unless and other wise prescribed by your doctor.

I think that the myth that Vitamin C can prevent or cure a cold is based on the idea that if you have a balanced diet then you are less at risk of getting a cold or any other illness for that matter than someone with a poor diet. Vitamin C is just one of those things that your body needs, I am not sure of the how the myth came about but maybe it was around the time when people discovered the importance of vitamins in keeping healthy?

There is no actual cure for the cold but there are many methods of preventing it or slowly making it go away. Vitamin C does help because it helps the immune system fight off the cold.
Most colds go away thanks to the immune system. There is no "actual cure" for the common cold.

There is no cure for the cold. If there were no one would ever get a cold again. There are things you can do to help prevent colds but taking vitamin C when you already have a cold isn't going to do much. I've found that drinking tons of fluids when you first notice cold symptoms really help because it flushes out all the germs.
