Are there specific words you have a hard time remembering how to spell?

My list would be very long but there is one that sticks out in my mind. Since I sell on a couple of auction sites and use them often you would think I could remember but for some reason I can never remember how to spell excellant. Is it ant or ent? I should keep it written down in front of me but don't so I'm sure I have more than one auction with the word spelled wrong. I use a couple of different web browsers and they I seem to have a problem with spell checkers working so that's no help.
What words do you have a hard time remembering the spelling of? Do you always use a spell checker?

When I was a kid "Special" was always really hard for me to spell. I have a hard time typing the word "because" and I constantly spell it "becuase". I always have trouble remembering the whole I before E type thing.
But in general the words I have trouble spelling are the ones that look nothing like they sound like hors d'oeuvres.
I have ways of remembering certain things. Like rendezvous.
I just remember how to spell it by saying it how it looks.
"wren-dez-vus" when it's really not pronounced like that at all.
I'm curious if anyone will say "Lose" or "Loose" because I find that people spell "lose" as in, I will lose my keys if I don't put them in the same spot every day, "Loose". Loose is like, wow I lost weight and these pants are sure loose!.
That is one of my biggest pet peeves ever.

Some people have said that the English language is one of the easiest to learn but I would disagree with them on that one. Basically I always remember the i before e but the lose and loose I always have to stop and think about.

I do not understand the lose loose thing. They are two completely different words with two completely different meanings and the way they are spelled makes sense.
The English language is stupid.
Why is island spelled island when the S is silent... or knife... but the K is silent.
and why in the world are read and read or invalid and invalid two completely different words spelled the exact same way.

Oh i know you are talking to me now!haha...Yes many many words, to long to write down...I have problems all the time with getting words right.I have something on this new satilite dish i have my high speed through and it will underline words i have not spelled right, it doesn't do like spell check and refuse to let you send the mail , but it does let you know you goofed...When i finish typing or replying to a discussion, all you see is red underlining,so i go back and try to get it right..I have a high school dipolma, and took a year of college and still cannot spell, i cannot understand it, sometimes i think i am one of those people that see words wrong or something..I am NOT a good speller....So don't feel bad, some people are good at spelling, some or not.I am also sorry at math..I wonder how i ever got through school...

I used to take pride in the fact that I was a good speller but as I get older I find that I forget a lot of words. I also have the spell check that will SOMETIMES underline a word spelled wrong and I'll fix it.

When I was in school, I carried a pocket dictionary so I could look up all the words I couldn't spell. I would do well on spelling tests but as soon as the test was over, I would forget how to spell them.I have many words that I still can't spell but I have spell check and I do have the words I use more often written on a little piece of index card right near my computer. These are the words I was sick and tired of looking up every few days. And now when I need them , they are right here.

You are very smart to do that. I always say I'm going to but it never happens. I should do it right now while I'm thinking about it shouldn't I? lolol....

One of the ones I have a problem with is children. I always seem to put childern. Also things like color colour, grey gray but I think that is different countries spell differently. I do find thought now that I am on Mylot that my spelling has gotten better. Thought I am on Firefox which tells me if something isn't spelled correctly I see less and less red underscores. LOL

I can't think of any off the top of my head but I can say this, the words with a double d or double t, I have a tendancy to forget which ones the word has. Such as ladder or is it latter. lol I know it's ladder but you get my point in the example. The english language is so hard to learn that even the one's who've spoken it all of their lives still have a time with it.

Similar to you, I always have the problem of spelling "independent" correctly. It's funny because most of the time when I spell that word, it comes out as "independAnt". When I spell that word wrongly and others tell me about my mistake, I always come up with the argument, "If pendant is spelled as P-E-N-D-A-N-T, why isn't dependent spelled D-E-P-E-N-D-A-N-T?".....I guess English is really a hard language to master..... =(

Yes, English is a very difficult language to master. It's the only language I know and have been speaking and writing it for 60 years and still have problems with it.

since i was in elementary, i had been really careful with how i spell words. i had been our school's bet for spelling contests so back then, the dictionary had always been my bestfriend. well, i commit mistakes, too specially when it comes to typing. but it does not bother me so much.
now, i am learning a new language which is swedish. and for being in school for 2 months, my brain has been twisted since then. too difficult to remember new words! plus, i need to write a lot and read much in order for me to be familiar with the spelling of words. really difficult but satisfying!

Oh, you are talking to the worst speller in the world - I have trouble with tons of words but suppose 'correspondece' is one of the worst you know that thing you do when you write back and forth with someone else :(
I thank the Lord for 'spell checker'.

I always did very well in spelling, ctry, and seldom come across a word that stumps me. I do believe that since I have been using the spell checker I am having more problems than ever before. I was posting a discussion the other day and the word I wanted to use kept coming up wrong according to spell checker. It was "assassination" and I couldn't rest until I finally got it right. Now I can feel comfortable knowing I can spell it with no trouble.

Yes, quite a few! I used to be a top speller in my class, but I think I got hit on the head a few times too many - my memory isn't what it used to be!
