why is it that so many people of the new generation are so proud of the fact that they do not read. As if it were something widely frowned upon. I enjoy reading very much and believe it has made me an overall better person, so why do children and teenagers feel the need to almost despise it?

I cringe when i see social network profiles saying
Favorite book: I don't read books!
Agh, kids nowadays are so dependent on technology. They probably won't be able to enjoy life if you take away their gadgets :(

I think its terrible that kids today aren't reading. I think a lot of time younger teenagers or kids associate reading with school, and feel like they can just watch tv or see the movie or have something better to do but that is so useless. I read like a maniac and it has expanded my vocabulary, helped my creativity and imagination. When I read a book I get sucked in and it takes me to another place for a while, I feel like tv or video games can't do that effectively. I also think parents need to encourage reading more, once kids found a book they liked I think they would really get into reading more.

I have 3 children 7, 13 and 15. My first has always loved books and was 'reading' to his little sister at 20 months old. My daughter took a while but now loves reading and my youngest son is just starting to learn to read but he already has an big interest in books. They are all wonderful kids and I am very proud of them.
The main problem is there are too many other things for them to do ie xbox, playstation etc, and they have trouble finding books that keep them intereted. That was my daughters problem - we couldnt find anything that she was interested in ....until I got her reading Enid Blyton that is.
They have a short attention span so they never give books the chance to enthrall them.

Mostly I think it's because of the technology we have today. Why read when we can watch it?
But I'd have to say that besides the technology hype the younger generations are just too lazy to pick up a book and read it. They don't want to take the effort if they weren't surrounded by reading when they were younger. If we would read to the younger children more then they may appriciate books more.

Is anyone proud that they are not reading? Really? Isn't it more like they just don't like to read? I am not justifying them, since I like reading very much, but they may like other things. To kids games are more appealing - and don't require that much skill I think.
