As I'm not very 'IT' informed, I need some advice. I'm about to buy a new laptop (my first) I don't know what is the best operating system to go for. There are pros and cons for both. Firstly, I'm use to XP as that's what I have on my PC. However I believe Vista is the future, and maybe would be the better option. Any advice from friends would be greatly appreciated.

Well, I am buying a new laptop, but I don't think I have enough confidence in Vista to have it installed. I can always install Vista when they have ironed out all the bugs.

vista would be a better choice.... but it also depends on the configuration of ur System, as vista consumes alot of resources, the hardware sould be powerful. as far as being future-proof there is no such concept... technologies changesand system becomes obsolete. and open systems are the future of operating systems and my personal choice is redhat Linux

Vista or XP would be installed in the laptop when I buy it in a few weeks time. What advantage is Linux. A lot of new computers are sold here with Linux installed as an option. Should I consider that as an option?

first of all linux is free so it saves money. secondly it is secure and and you can download the patches and updates from the net without cost. it comes in many flavors and graphics are awesome.the current version of "suse flavor"(one of the many flavor of linux) is better than vista both with respect to graphics and performance. linux is the future guys....

Well if you take my advice and let me tell you Windows experience far better operating system than Windows is the right now. I'm using XP and few months ago I tried the latest version of the windows but admitted you it was really horrible experience that I had. I have a PC with two GP of RAM but still I was facing problems with the working of Windows. Also I had to 50s assembly of media X-rated card but still nothing was running smoothly. So I thought that it is of no use to get the latest version of Windows operating system and I went back to Windows XP. I feel right now it is the best operating system on market and I will keep losing it until and unless I am forced to change my operating system and I would also suggest anyone to use this instead of vista because it is a real problem for any kind of use of.

if you are hungry for looks and you have a lot of money to spend on your computer then you can definitely go for the latest version of Windows to.but if you are willing to work on your computer than I would definitely suggest you to use Windows xp as much as you can. Right now it is the most stable operating system that you will get. It will not eat up your resources and then that is the reason why you can work without any big problem. Letters if your instrument was the star it will eat up all the resources of a computer is so you have to upgrade your system to a very high-end computer,. I would rather suggest a more people to use XP as much as you can. Then later when the hardware prices will drop you can always go and upbraid her home to a better PC and

I think both are good in a way. Because atlast the y are used for same purpose. The only difference is that. Vista is having a great deal of upgrades in it's OS with all fancy features of it.

Vista has so many problems and I wouldn't recommend it for anyone. If you want to have smooth operation, stay with XP.... Vista is the worst operation system ever created....

Hi polachicago, I think you could be right, judging from what I've heard. Vista seems to have too many problems.

I cannot stand Vista!!! I think it stinks royally. I will not use my laptop unless I absolutely have to because I dislike it so much! I think they still have a lot of bugs to work out. I would go for XP. Have fun finding it on a new laptop though. I looked and all I could find was Vista :-( Let us know how things work out for ya! ~Stephanie

It depends on whether the first service pack to Vista has appeared, and that you would get the newest Vista version and I would get a computer that offers both. The reason is that although Vista is the future, there are still some software and programs that have not been adapted to it yet. This way you can switch when your program does not work on one. Here are two links to help you make up yur mind. http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,128656-page,1/article.html http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,128669-page,1/article.html

We have both a vista computer and an xp and from using both I prefer the xp way more. There are many problems I get with the vista and it is just plan annoying. Just from my experience I feel that newer isn't always better.

Most agree with you. I guess Vista OP can be added later, either to my laptop or my PC. Give Microsoft a chance to iron out all their bugs.

Vista eats too much memory. If you have 4 GIG or more of memory, then get a Vista. If not, stick to XP-pro. Otherwise your computer will be crawling. I'd rather wait for the better version of the Vista. It has so many problems. That's why I'm sticking to XP until the upgraded version comes out - if there is.

Hi Mipen, Well I have XP Home Edition and for me that works just fine, Ive never had any problems with it as far as I know, since Im not really IT informed either. I have heard that the few people I know who have Vista dont like it, and wish they would have stuck with XP. Maybe they werent as prepared for the future as you might be and just didnt adjust all that well. Call up a unbiased PC place and ask them what they would recommend as a personal choice. That might help you too! Good luck! Bay Lay Gray xx

I certainly don't want a repeat of the problems I had with 2000, so I'll probably stay with XP. Thanks for your input.

Go buy Vista....like you said its future proof... If you don't like it, you can always purchase an XP disc and install...at least you still have Vista in case you change your mind again
