Breakfast is the worst meal of the day

Confused - confusion should never be part of a healthy eating plan

I've been trying to lose weight by changing my bad habits. I don't eat cheese. I munch on fruits or vegetables and I keep a food diary. Yay me! One of the things I have vowed to do is eat breakfast and I HATE IT! Most important meal of the day. I am forcing myself to eat when I'm not hungry. I am not hungry in the morning. How is this supposed to be beneficial?

I don't understand how eating when you are not hungry is suppose to help you lose weight? I don't eat breakfast because too much food too early in the morning will make me feel sick. For years they have been saying breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Well, I rather skip the most important meal and feel good than eat a breakfast and feel sick.

I struggle with this so much. My mom said I gave them a difficult time right from childhood. Most of the time it gives me heartburn or makes me tired. Either way that's not how I want to start my day. By the way, your name is a combination of 3 very important names...is that coincidence? Just wondering

Eatting increases metabolism. You need to eat every 2-3 hours whether your hungry or not to keep your metabolism high. That doesn't mean eatting meals, that means eatting small healthy meals or snacks. I follow this guide: 300 calorie breakfast 3 hours later a 150 calorie snack 300 calories lunch 3 hours later a 150 calorie snack 300 calorie dinner 3 hours later a 150 calorie snack All totalling 1350 calories. Your metabolism is constantly working to break down food, which burns more and you're NEVER hungry. Not eatting for 5+ hours (if you're hungry or not) will slow your metabolism down and you don't burn as much. You should never wait until your starving to eat. Hope this helps

Don't eat any food after 8:00 at night, it'll be good for your stomach, and you'll soon find that you feel hungry in the morning. Then, enjoy yourself!

Thanks ruby I actually don't eat after 9 pm unless it's been a long day or my husband is on afternoon shift. Shift work is terrible for everyone involved.

No, bedtime is not set. I go to bed depending on whatever shift my husband is working. Usually it's anywhere from 10:30 pm - 3 am... But I always wake up at around the same time regardless (between 7:30-9) - and that depends on how urgently the dog needs to go out LOL!

Do you have a good habit of going to bed early and getting up early? A good habit will help you feel good everyday!

When I used to diet I couldn't face food the first thing in the morning, so I would eat a banana, it gave me the energy I needed and full of vitamins and minerals it at least constituted as breakfast along with a hot mug of black coffee, sweeteners, I can't stand milk in coffee which is just as well. And then about 11 or 12 I got hungry then I had a bowl of cereal, lots of small meals are better than a few large meals. The trick also is to not eat after 8pm at night, hope it gets easier. Nowadays I don't diet I eat what I want because I prefer to exercise, it's far easier and I love my food too much.

I love food do and hate dieting. I love working out - as soon as I'm done with this program, I'm going back to a modified weight training program. The food changes are permanent though

I'm not forcing myself anymore either. It's too frustrating! I'm eating at around 11 or so - if I feel hungry.

Hi Flower, A few years ago I had gained some unwanted pounds. I too had heard if you want to lose weight start the day with a good, healthy breakfast. So, even though I NEVER feel like eating in the mornings, I tried it. I found when I ate brkfst. I was REALLY hungry by about 10:00 AM, and when I didn't eat brkfst. I had no problem waiting until lunch to eat. I stopped the brkfst nonsense, watched what and how much I ate, and lost the xtra pounds....they have not returned either...thank heavens. lol

Hi Carol, Wow, you're tall AND slim - the double threat. I'm ( a complete contrast ) 5'1" with 14 pounds to go before I get to the weight my doctor recommends. Once I get to that weight, I'm going an extra 10 or 15 pounds before I get back to (modified) weight training.

PS: lol.... I forgot to add; I have four children, I am 5'7" tall, 127 pounds and I wear a size six. Didn't want you to think my plan didn't work..it did. I'm healthy and look great... now if I could just lose a few years off my age..never satisified..lol..lol.

The way to get hungry in the morning is to skip dinner a couple of days in a row. Then you will be starving for breakfast. Then forget about what the rest of the US eats for Breakfast; eat what you crave! Eat as much as you can hold! Eat a really late lunch. The later the better. Do not eat dinner. Have some fruit or veggies before bed. Do not eat a meal after 3pm in the afternoon if at all possible!!!! If you do this, your body will reach its optimum weight. I did this and lost over 108 lbs. I ate anything and everything I wanted to before 3pm. I stuck to that like glue. Eventually, I wasn't as hungry and I lost the weight very fast. It took 4and a half months. It was bizarre. I quit smoking at the same time. That made it even more bizarre. I still have not gained the weight back and it has been almost 20 years. I do eat after 3 at times now because I am not trying to lose any more but I still do not eat late. Try it you might like it.

You took on a lot all at once. To quit smoking AND start a new diet at the same time is stressful for most people but it sounds like you managed to do it with great success. Way to go!

I very much disagree with eat as much as you can hold. Most bodies can only take in and burn effiently 300-400 calories a meal. When you take in more then that, its stored. It'd be absolutely incorrect to stop eating at 3pm and go to bed around 11 and have 7 hours of no food, your body's metabolism would come to a stop. Everyones body is completely different, but you're definitely not eating a well balanced diet for your bodys full potential.

That's a good suggestion. It's probably less calories than the dry toast I eat and I'm betting it's a lot tastier too. I'll give it a try. Thanks

LOL! I am having problem with taking breakfast too but my wife would make sure that I have something to eat every morning before I am off to work. Now, I think I am used to it already that it has become a routine.

That's too funny of a coincidence because my husband makes my toast (sometimes oatmeal) when he's home. He's like my alarm clock for meals - he just gets up, makes my breakfast and sets it down on my place mat with my coffee and glass of water. Aren't we the pampered duo? LOL!

I think even though we don't feel hungry during the morning, we still ought to eat our breakfast. If your primary goal is to lose more weight, then practicing a balance diet is the preferred motivation you should do. Eating your breakfast doesn't really bother your overall health status at all. What is important is that you exercise regularly and you follow your balance diet pattern.:-)

I think what bothers me most is that I'm not hungry at all and have to force myself to eat even the smallest bit of breakfast. It seems to remain a struggle for me day after day

I like bread so I make toast. As strange as it sounds, I don't put butter or jam on it. I just like it plain, so that's my breakfast almost all the time (except sometimes I have oatmeal instead)

If you don't like eatting breakfast, maybe you could try having a meal replacement drink. You need to kick start your metabolism from being asleep, it revs it up and sets the pace for it all day. If you skip breakfast your metabolism stays slow, which we all know isn't good. Try Boost, Slim Fast or other meal replacement drinks that will give you the kick start but you won't have to eat anything. I love breakfast, for some reason I'm always starving 30 minutes after I wake up so I have no problem eatting lol..maybe THATS my problem!

I've been having dry toast at 9:30 - 10 (sometimes later if I don't remember). It's like a chore though. My calories are too low so I don't get a mid morning snack but I'm supposed to have breakfast, lunch, mid afternoon snack, dinner, mid evening snack. In actuality I get breakfast or lunch, dinner and mid-evening snack. I'm waaaaaay off the recommended plan I 'aint gonna give up though. I'll go down fighting LOL!

One great way to look at it. If you don't eat breakfast you may lose weight, but your loseing MUSCLE weight..not fat. If you eat breakfast your body has fuel to burn and will continue burning (burning fat). You also keep your muscle mass which ALSO burns fat. Not eating = your body needs to get calories from somewhere to survive. It will grab from muscle first and leave you with flabby moving skin/fat...not attractive.

Hi jdeforge, I eat well the rest of the day, it's just the mornings I have trouble with. I don't skip breakfast to lose weight, I just have never eaten breakfast, even as a child they couldn't force me to eat it....now it's part of my new routine and I'm really not having an easy time with it. I don't remember most of the time until either mid morning or lunch time. Yes, it's a problem and I'm beginning to feel like I should have selected other priorities from the list. The list contained at least a dozen other items (in each of 4 categories) and I chose the one I knew would be difficult for me because I know how important it is. All together, I have 4 items to adhere to: 1. Weigh myself only once a week 2. Keep a food journal 3. Exercise for half an hour each day 4. Eat breakfast every day The first one is easy because my husband hides the scale and takes it to work with him. The second one has been an addiction for years and isn't a challenge at all. The third one is actually about 2 hours less exercise than what I normally get.... and lastly, breakfast. My biggest challenge. The weight gain was sudden. Because I thought it was due to another matter, I misreported it to my doctors until it became painfully clear there was something else going on. It's frustrating.
