Does anyone else out there live with OCD? If so what are some of your mannerisms? How do you cope? With meds or without?

In my opinion I dont think medicine would work... I think the only way somebody can get over their compulsions is to restrain themselves from doing it just once so they can then begin to not do it more often.. Although for most people that is hard.. including myself.. im horrible with it, ugh.

Hmm, well it is a chemical imbalance in the brain so pretty much just trying to stop doesn't alway work. Has anyone took meds for this? I have never been on a med specific for OCD only depression.

I have what my shrink finally categorized as obsessive thoughts: I get songs, pieces of songs, and/or note patterns stuck in my head. This is way above and beyond the everyday "earworm" that everybody has. I've kind of learned to live with it, but it can at times become really intrusive and debilitating. I'm taking anafranil, but it doesn't do a thing.

Hello mrsjbelle,
OCD can be treated only with medicine, and if anybody say that it can be treated with other methods than medicine is not correct. Medicine with Meditation can help to cope this OCD to maximum extent.Though I am not suffering from OCD, I will give you details of OCD here for your knowledge to make you understand better about OCD.
Obessive Compulsive Disorder(OCD) is a genetical problem. Some body in your family(even ancestors)might have suffered from this problem.
MANNERISMS:
OCD patients suffer from Obession: Unwanted, recurring thoughts, concerns with themes of contamination and "germs", the need to check frequently house hold items in case of fire or burgulary, the symmetrical order of objectives or fear of harming oneself or others.
COMPULSIONS:
Repetitive behaviours related to obession such as washing.
Now research is being going on to find the exact genes responsible for this disorder.I am hoping that the researchers will be able to findout the responsible gene and immediately there will be a saperate medicine for this. Until then, to treat this disorder only anti-depressents have to be prescribed because to calm down the sub-consious brain which is responsible for obession and compulsions.
But remember that anti-depressents are good for this disorder and if used countinously, within 3 months you will be able to come to near normal. So, visit a doctor and get a treatment now itself.
Goddluck and wish you speedy recovery.
