Or is it only people who don't blog who read them? I hear complaints about how boring many blogs are, but so what? How big is the audience for blogs anyway, and is it only the very few well-known blogs that get an audience of readers?

If you are a blogger, you must read other blogs. I read about 5 to 10 blogs everyday. Some of them are my favourite blogs and I also choose some at random. If you consider blogging seriously, you need to keep in touch with other bloggers. For example, if you blog about web design, then you should read the best blogs on web design, blogs that gives you blogging tips and blogs that helps you to monetize blogs. It may be difficult to organize your time. Use RSS to fetch the content from your favourite blogs and read only those titles that attract you. All the best. Regards, http://assessmyblog.blogspot.com/

I understand what you're saying, but MUST? I don't think so. Perhaps if you're in the situation where you're trying to keep up with a particular topic, then 'must' is the word. If you're writing primarily from your own area of interest, then consistently reading blogs isn't necessary at all, IMHO.

I still maintain that you "MUST" read other blogs. Blogging is still evolving. New services that support blogging are regularly released. You should keep an eye on this. To do this, you should read other blogs. There are many things which you won't know as a blogger. I am blogging for 2 years and still get surprises when I visit some blogs. Blogging is a continuous learning process. Even if you have special topic you should read blogs on similar topic. Blogging thrives by the network of bloggers. Never consider other blogs as competition. They are here to help you. I know there are too many good blogs. But, whenever you like a blog just bookmark it or subscribe to the feed. At a later stage, you find a better blog then drop the previous blog. To find the most famous blogs on blogging like ProBlogger, CopyBlogger and JohnChow, it took me nearly a year. Finally, thanks for visiting my blog.

I've now had a look at your blog on blogging, and certainly there's worthwhile information there. The problem perhaps is that there are several very good blogs on blogging out there. I read them occasionally, but not constantly. Checked out BloggingZoom too.

there are interesting blogs and there are boring blogs. most bloggers i know blog-hop (read other people's blogs) and interact with other bloggers...

Yes, you're both right. I've blog-hopped at times, but seldom get back to the blogs again. And blogs I thought were interesting in the past I haven't been back to in ages. It's a bit like being subscribed to dozens of magazines - you never get a chance to really read them.

The only blogs I have read are ones I have been directed to by someone or from some page. Even them I usually just scan them. Probably I am missing something of interest but they are so many bad ones that it tends to invoke a negative preconception about them. all the best urban

Fair enough. I start off with some enthusiasm, meaning to read certain blogs regularly, but it doesn't happen. Even the top line ones I miss, because I just don't have the time for all that reading!

The audience for blogs is huge, but if your blog isn't ineresting it won't be read. I have two blogs, one of which has been going for a year and a half. It's built up to anywhere from 50 to almost 200 hits a days, but it's take work and time. I also subcribe to two dozen blogs, and read other blogs that I find interesting. Most regular bloggers do read blogs.

Point taken. I guess I was thinking more of blogs that aren't focused, as one of mine isn't particularly. Or blogs that are just about people's personal lives, the sort of thing that used to be written in a diary and seldom saw the light of day.

Well, that's good to hear. I suspect the less interesting ones will fade away in due course. I've certainly come across plenty of blogs that have two or three entries and nothing more.

I used to dislike those personal blogs too (even though I have a personal blog). But more and more interesting personal blogs are coming out. :)

Hi Mcrowl, To answer your question how big is the audience for blogs? First of all, you need to ask yourself how do you bring audiences or in the IM terms Traffic to your blog. Your audience can be millions and Billions even buyt how do you bring it to your blog? (1) Forums (2) Press Release (3) EZine Articles Hope this helps David http://thehealthroom.blogspot.com

I realise that there is the potential to get large audiences, but I think there are few bloggers who achieve this. Certainly not bloggers like me, who don't write on a specific topic, don't necessarily focus on the 'new' and don't offer a blog that informs people about news in a particular field.

I think that's the difference: here in NZ I don't have friends who write blogs, whereas it seems to much more common in the States.

I actually read 3 blogs on a every-update basis. They update, I read, I probably comment. I can't help it. 2 of those are REALLY good. the 3d is a new blog that's run by a friend of mine whom I think has potential

http://howto-earncash.blogspot.com/ and http://bloggletype.blogspot.com/ I do read other blogs occasionally (like some of the ones on mybloglog community. I know which ones I like and which ones I've added for the sake of adding) like this one: http://thegptguide.blogspot.com/ it's not a big blog, but I find that the few gpt programs he mentions were very good. I do like to read other people's blogs, it inspires me to write on mine ^_^
