To sketch or not to sketch.....

have you ever tried sketching? i did when i was in high school and even in my college days. I would usually get a picture of me and sketch half of my face on the picture. Why half? i always have this feeling that if get to sketch the whole face, it just isn't me. So i stop halfway where it looks more of my face. Not only that, i also tried to sketch sunsets, trees, flowers or whatever i felt like worth sketching. I usually do this whenever i feel bored, during class maybe or whenever my prof's lecture are worth dozing off to wonderland. I did that just to keep my eyes awake... I had kept my collections in our old house until hungry termites consumed all of them:-( Now, i rarely get some time nor the mood to to sketch. Maybe I should do it again, i 'm not really that good though, but its a good stress reliever and hobby. How about you do you sketch? What are the usual objects that you sketch? Do you need some mood to do so?

Once I decided that I was going to sketch an aspect of every place I ever lived as a 'memento' of the time and place. I've only actually done it in a few places though. Sometimes I'll do a watercolor instead. And you're right, it is very relaxing. Even if I'm not in the mood, but start to draw or paint something anyway, it will PUT me in the right mood, and a very good mood it is too!

I sketch and have been doing so for years. Just pick up a book and pencil then draw the world around you. Or pick up a book and pencil then draw out the imagination. Its great! Personally I do both of these from time to time. It can relieve stress and it can also just help one escape and relax for a spell. Various things I've done sketchwise - Skyscape - Stillife material - Silllife model - Valleys - Rivers/Lakes - Beaches - Oceans - Sunsets (though I like pastels for that) - Gaming/Anime - Vehicles - Buildings/Cities - Spacial/Celestial bodies - Expressionism

Yes when I was a kid I always try to sketch... I copy my sketches from comics and etc. But as I grow up I loose my interest in sketching. Instead I focus my time in playing volleyball... I forgot all the sketching that I do. but with your discussion, I wonder now, Do I still have the power to do some good sketch...

I love sketching, painting and sculpting, anything to do with art, i love. I definately have to be inspired by something to draw or create art. i think it's a good idea to keep a sketch book on hand, even if you are not an artist, just for fun.

Hey, you should upload the stuff that you have sketched. Anyways, I am a frustrated “sketcher”. I mean, I regret for not paying much attention during my art class in HS. The only thing that I love to sketch is an eye, not a pair of eyes, but an eye. I envy those friends who could sketch. Hehehe. Anyways, I will share this link : http://www.portrait-artist.org/. I have discovered this link almost 2 years ago. :P I find it hard using a charcoal pen (I only regular pencils). Hahaha! I am not really of an artist (and I guess, I am not gifted). It’s just that there are times when I really feel like sketching. :P

Ah yes, the gloriousness out of sketching - in my opinion, it really doesn't get any better than that when you're talking about such things as art. Well, at least in my case... In school, I usually tend to create graffiti kind of sketches with letters (of course) for no reason, or maybe just out of boredom - which is something I still do to this very day. What surprises me is how good at certain times few of my unplanned, random sketches turn out to be without even paying any attention whatsoever!

I have done more in the past myself - I just have other interests now, like learning violin. I can't take it everywhere with me though, and why I stopped - I probably just lost interest, though I doodle some nonsense once in a while. I'm amazed deviantart.com hasn't deleted me yet - I haven't updated it since 2004 - michael-h.deviantart.com/gallery/scraps

I used to love sketching. When I was in high school, I considered sketching as my past time. But I myself cannot appreciate my sketches. I find them very lifeless. I don't know why. Anyway, I stopped doing it and focused myself on other things instead.

I used to sketch quite a bit. I was actually quite good in my youth. I won a contest of an eagle I drew in pencil and it took me weeks to finish. I really took great pride in it. I always enjoyed art, both viewing and drawing. Maybe you should take up the pencil and paper and see what you come up with. I also did need to be in the mood as well.

I'm not very artistic when it comes to sketching or painting. If I do, it is usually basic shapes.

Yeah. I have this kind of experience when i was in high school. Then it became a hobby that whenever i get into a spare time, i have to get a pencil and a piece of paper then sketch anything my eyes could get into. When someone appreciates my work it was repeated over and over again until one day i realized i was having this hidden skill of mine to surface and later found out that i am earning from it when someone ask me to have his face sketched and bought it. That was the time i started to do it seriously. Now, this is a means of living than a hobby. Thanks

I love sketching. I learned it when I was in Grade 6. I was really bored during our home economics subject and that was 2 years ago. My seatmate and I enjoyed doodling in the back of my notebook. After 2 months, after copying her style, after sharing styles, we joined as a school cartoonist in newspapers. The training was great and sketching in your notebook was a big break to us. Thats the start. And after that year, I almost join a regional contest for cartooning but sadly, I migrated at Canada. Now, Im taking up 2 art classes. I extremely love art. I attend a class for sculptures, ceramics & paintings & sketches. Its really cool in class for art! Even if the mess goes up to your face, its a lot fun. Its my hobby and when I hate someone, usually make fun of it. Or just simply draw things that makes my mind peacefully so I would forget any stress. I love art. Imagination becomes true. Im such a moody girl but in art, whatever mood i had, I will draw. Just a glimpse of my sketch pad and a ballpen, tada! Drawing time! and when I miss my friends on my home country, I draw their faces. Im not really good at shadings but Im looking forward to improve my work because this skill is so great. Its all about your personality. Its not because you have to do it as a job but you simply love it. Thats mine, how about others? I would love to hear yours! :D
