If you knew a second language would you make more money?

I've always wanted to learn a second language. Most likely it would be Spanish as there's a real need for Spanish speaking customer service representatives in our area. The jobs for bilingual speakers pay much more. That would really help out our finances.
But, I heard about one guy that knows 13 languages. He works with a state agency and they pay him $15 per language per hour. And, he gets paid for all the languages every time they bring him in. That guy must be making a nice sum of money. Maybe this upcoming year I'll work on the second and third language. Do you have a second or third language? Does it help with your job?

Hello dear beauty queen.
Anyone who knew a second language would find it much easier for him/her to get an easy job and easy money as well. I have some colleagues from Germany, Austria, New Zealand, America, kenya, the Philippines, Finland and Japan.
Most of my colleagues from Finland, Germany and Austria can speak at least more than four languages. I admire them so much for their language talents.
We are told that the westerners are very good at learning foreign languages. But I am sorry to say that I only know a little about English besides my mother tongue. I used to try to German and Japanese, but as I did not have enough time to study them, I had to give up. But anyway I think that it is enough for me if I could learn English well and have the ability to communicate with foreign friends.
Ok, I am almost off the point that a second laguage helps you make more money. My answer is Yes.
One of my students whose major is English got a job in Shanghai because of her good spoken English. She is working in an American financial company. Her monthly salary is much higher than the ordinary white-collar people, four times higher than they could get. So you are right in this discussion that a good second language would help you make more money.
Thanks for your discussion ann happy posting, dear friend.

Well, if I fluently knew more than just English, I could definately work another type of job and make more $$ that I am making now, as I am always seeing jobs available places that pay good if you can speak other languages.
Uhnfortunately for me at 43, I am not about to go to school again and learn another language, so I will have to make do with what I do know. I can speak a little bit of Spanish and French besides English but not enough to be able to speak them fluently.

Im a photographer in a very busy studio. I know enough spanish to get me by and some sighn language. It REALLY helps to be able to communicate with customers who you might not understand their English as clearly. Plus its great being able to talk to everyone involved.

in my place, english is already the 2nd language. of course, i am not american, so we should learn english. customer service is common here too, there are many call center jobs, and some people knew how to speak spanish and french too. i myself would want a part time job in a call center so i can get extra income for myself.

Call center jobs always pay so much more than other types of manual labor. When I get back into the job market, that's one of the first places, I'll go. Best of luck with the job hunt. They will be lucky to have your skills on the job. Best wishes!

If you are a diplomat, a translator, a guide, then a second or third language is necessary. But it is also nice to learn a second language. I speak and write English, our native language and I understand Spanish language as during my college days we have subjects in Spanish and our native language are mostly with Spanish origin. My teenage girl took up French lesson for beginners and I am encouraging her to pursue with what interest her. Japanese language is also good to learn, and of course Chinese if you are a businessmen. German language is also nice and quite difficult to pronounce. Its nice to learn another language.

I speak 3 languages, greek as native, English and French.Where i come from, a person who is younger than 40 and doesnt speak at least two languages is considered dumb. The second language is always considered known, the third is welcome, and anyone who can speak another one is sure to be successful. But here, no.A second language doesnt offer more salary, just because if you dont speak it you wont find a job at all! A third one, yes, offers some salary improvement.

I know two languages: french and english. In my current job, knowing english is not helping me having more money, but with that, I can help when some customer don,t even speak french. Sometimes I'M looking for the words, but I have no problem understanding what they are saying to me.
But here in Quebec, you have to at least know a little basic english to be able to served all the customer. But sometimes when other girsl have customers that speak english, they all refer them to me lol

Knowing more than 1 language is cool. But that by itself doesn't make you more money.
You make more money only if you USE them in your line of work. So if your work requires the use of the second or third language, then yes, since you are a rarer talent, you are likely to be paid at a premium.
And learning how to speak spanish is nice. It is quite possibly the second most spoken language by number of native speakers in the world.

Hi Beautyqueen!
Well lets see.. I guess knowing different languages can help you achieve better career opportunities but most importantly I think it depends on the area that you are working, regionally speaking and also career-wise.. I speak 3 languages (english, spanish and french) and I am currently studying Italian.. and I used to be a translator for the American Embassy in different countries during a sabatical year I took after graduation high school, that was a very good chance of taking advantage of the knowledge I have..
But when the time came to settle down and going to University (I'm studying Law)I got a job at an Insurance Company, and the fact that I speak different languages isnt really an important matter for them..
So basically, I think that for your personal gain it is good to know a couple of extra things.. and if you are looking to use it as a work-tool you just have to take into consideration what fields are best to apply all your knowledge :)
*hugs*

It really does make you more money. I worked as a certified medical interpreter for English/Spanish in an ER for years and I made really good money. If I came in on a holiday I was making about $25/hr. I have a friend who does it for the courts and she makes $65 an hour. It depends on where you live and what the demand is in your area.
The other plus too is that speaking a second language also raises your IQ!

I am not sure, if you can earn more money. Maybe if you choose to know language like Spanish or other language what are popular or need in today world. I speak four languages, but i don't think i have more opportunities or making money from it, but also it could be because those languages are not really famous or popular. Maybe if I would know spanish or french it would be the other case.

Knowing more than one language will really help especially if you are doing business with someone from overseas. Knowing the native language not only impress the person but will also help in relationship in many ways...
My colleague was telling me that his Japanese friend who studied English in Canada, returned to Japan and got an English tutoring job that pays US$2000 by working only 40 hours in a month...which is like 10 hours a week...

Hi,there! I think it's very good to learn another language cause it gives you another insight to the world and the culture. But it's not certain whether it will be helpful for your job.I think it really depends on what you do with your job.If the other language is a must for your current job, then of course it helps and I guess it'll help a lot.But if you don't need it for the job, then maybe it won't help that much. If you gotta use this language for some jobs, then that may bring you a nice sum of money. I have a second language, and I'm thinking about learning another one.I wanna learn a foreign language cause I'm interested in it and I'd like to know more about the culture as well as the people:) Thanks for the discussion and take care^_^
