A dead man and his killer...who is to blame ?

A unidentified hispanic male seen by a neighbor breaking into a nearby home. The neighbor, an older gentlemen, approximately in his 60's decides to go over there and attempt to hold this unidentified male until police arrive. While on the phone with dispatch, he confronts the would be thief, sees him with several items in his hands, and orders him not to move or he would be shot. The unidentified male moves and consequently, shot. The question is should the neighbor have appointed himself judge, jury, and executioner ? Realizing the factors that may have been involved...was the neighbor racist and shot before the thief really moved ? Was the neighbor on medication of some sort ? If self defense is his reason, was his life really in danger ? If there were items in his hands, a TV maybe, was that TV worth a life ? ...the decision is not that easy. Our own police, right, wrong, or indifferent are scrutinized for making such rash decisions. However, if a thief was in your neighbors home, would a simple call to the police satisfy your yearning for justice ? How many of you like to pay for the murderers on death row for 15 years ? How many of you are satisfied with the justice system ? Satisfied or not, justice is not to be placed in our own hands..right? They are to be judged by a jury of their peers.

Well Writing Wreck, I tend to disagree with you.
I don't think it was racially motivated. This man was simply being a good neighbor.
Everyday in America we put up with thieves breaking into our homes and cars and stealing what they are too lazy to go out and earn. I'm tired of it. If someone had been home when the thief broke in and he had not planned for it, would he have beaten, murdered or raped the homeowner?
We give too many rights to criminals. Sometimes good old boy justice is just fine.

I absolutely agree with you rebecca. I was not taking a stance one way or the other, just merely bringing some potential factors that may sway a decision regarding justice into own hands. Far too many rights too criminals and I dont know if I would have done any different than the neighbor. Thanks for the posting.

I'm with you there! Criminals have more rights than victims these days.
Anyway, welcome to Mylot!
