A LIST of PROBLEMS religion creates... and how there is only ONE benefit to it

Here is a part of an answer i gave to one of the people that had responded to me in my other discussion: "i don't see how 1500 years of banishing scientific advancement, taxing people through fear, indulgences, simonies, relics, avoiding state taxes, increasing support, starting wars and pretending to help the poor (mother t.) not to mention witch hunts, book burnings and extensive unnecessary exorcisms that led to psychological damage, economic disasters and political scams have had any benefits for society at all. do you?" i would also like to add, "terrorism, death, violence, hatred of other religions, hatred of other cultures, the holocaust, lack of thinking for yourself, destroying philosophy, hypocrisy - priest celibacy, molestation, rape, money laundering, increasing ignorance, dismissing science, dismissing history, dismissing logic, extremism, dogmatism, holding back creativity, dismissing art, destroying art, destroying history, brainwashing, scaring children, lack of consistency..." i could probably go on and on... but the most important thing i am against is the idea of HYPOCRISY (and brainwashing of course). religion has caused nothing but trouble for humanity and i don't see why anyone should be religious. no, this is not hate speech, its just an intensive criticism. If anyone is still religious after reading/knowing that, i would have no choice but to think of you as a sociopath. there is, however ONE [minor] thing that makes people religious.. and that, my friends, is that religion makes people feel comfortable with life. that seems to be the only benefit that religion brings to the table, but then again, it destroys the table right after :D. after reading the list, there may be somethings you disagree with, go ahead, point it out, but i doubt that anyone can take on all the points, because some are just facts. good luck tackling this one delusional theologians! :P

From the title of your discussion your attack is on religion as a whole, therefore to be successful you would need to show that all religion has these effects and that you fail to do if a counterfactual can be given. To much of what you say counterfactuals can be cited Buddhism for example. Far from making people feel comfortable with life, religion is a struggle, a challenge. Religion, didn't destroy philosophy, in fact it was the Church that bought the works of Aristotle to the West and neither was logic dismissed. In fact many philosophers were religious people. Actually, your attack seems to be aimed at the Roman Catholic Church, which has existed only since 11th Century when it split away from the Orthodox Church and so 400 years might have been a more accurate time period to cite. So, you think Mother T. only pretended to help the poor, do you have some evidence for this or is it just a wild claim? all the best urban

lol.. the church? yea right... it was the muslims who brought that stuff.. the church banned and burned lots of books.. and so what if a couple of philosophers were religious.. you think they had a choice? they would have been burned for heresy! what are you talking about.. there are many great theologian philosophers but hardly any of them were devoutly religious.. and the truth is, they COULD NOT change reliigon.. are you insane?? mother T!!?!!? she was an insane maniac.. she believed people had to suffor to know god.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pITN5_-BiOg

Those things did happen yes and they are true, but unfortunately it works both ways. The only thing I would say is humans do most or all of what you and soad described with or without religion. That is fact. People kill, rape, assault, batter, scare children, change or omit history, money launder, politcal scam, war, increase overall ignorance, suppress viewpoints, ridicule different viewpoints. And this is not hate speech to non-religion, just pointing something out is all. People are just people, they'll be evil with religion, without it, or through any other excuses, delusions, reasons they can come up with.

You said most of what I wanted to, pro. People do all those things with or without religion to blame for it.

see, the problem the discussion pointed out is the problem of HYPOCRISY... priests, popes and people of that nature preached against these things, the next thing you know, they were doing it themselves..

I agree. But that one minor thing is the only thing people are looking for. There are many religious people who don't know the history and wouldn't care about it. As long as they feel better, that is all that matters.

The unfortunate atrocities you have mentioned are present in society as a whole, and cannot be blamed solely on religion. It is sad that religious groups and organizations have participated in some of the behaviors you have mentioned. However, in my view religion is useless in the classic definition of the word. Relationship if the word that most closely describes what I believe is useful to man--that is relationship with the Son of God, Jesus Christ the Lord. True religion has been defined for us in James 1:27 of the Holy Bible: "Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world."

I think you were raised a catholic fighting. You have all the hang ups of a catholic that cannot deal with their upbringing. I have watched many folks rebel like you are rebeling. Why don't you just step back and relax and realize that you do not have to fight it. You do not have to believe it. And most of all you do not have to condemn it. Give youself a rest. It is not important to anyone else what you believe or do not believe. You are just one person. You will not change a single persons mind with your attitude. I do not think you can even anger anyone. I think they just feel sorry for you. You are lost in a world of your own anger. I have read a lot of your discussions and have responded to them, but this will be the last because it is not helping you. Sorry.
