How Honest Are You?

I went by the store to get a bag of dog food and a bag of cat food last night. The total was $26 and some change for 3 bags of dry dog food, one bottle of bleach and one bag of dry dog food. I handed the cashier $40 and she handed me back my change.
Since it was so cold, I just stuffed the change into my pocket and ran outside to my car. After putting my items in my trunk, I got into my car and drove off.
I needed gas and next door to the store was a gas station. I pulled in and reached into my pocket and pulled out $53 in change. The cashier gave me way too much change. Instead of a $10 bill, 3 $1 bills, I had a $50 bill plus 3 $1 bills.
I paid for my gas using my debit card instead and turned back around the store. I had my receipt in my pocket and sure enough, she owed me $13 in change, not $53 in change.
Lord knows I could have used the extra $40 right now, but my mother, being the woman she wa before her death, would have reached down from Heaven and slapped me silly if I didn't go back.
So I went back in, gave the clerk my receipt, and the $53 in change and told her she gave me too much. I hadned her back the $50 bill and she gave me a $10 in it's place. After I left, I did feel better knowing what I did.
Usually in those types of stores, if your cash register drawer is short a lot money at the end of the day, it's taken out of your paycheck. This would have been taken out of her paycheck. They usually don't care about anything less than a few dollars, but $40 is a lot of money.
Would you have turned around or would you have kept the money? Be honest. I'm not here to judge you. I know a lot of people would have kept the extra $40. With gas prices being what they are, that extra $40 could have filled up my gas tank twice.
Please, be honest. Again, I'm not here to judge.

I don't think I would feel any guilt keeping the money in this situation, because when I worked for a backers the cash registers were often plus or minus up to £100 or so and noone ever got in trouble, it was just like that. Ofcourse if it was an everyday occurance it would look suspicious, but now and then it was bound to happen, so I think maybe it would be the same for a petrol station. And concidering the fuel stations make a killing, I don't think I would lose any sleep over it.
If it was a little family run shop then it would definately be a different story. But your honesty is admirable!

I think you did a great thing. I do not normally carry cash, but when I do I try to pay attention to the change I get back. If the cashier was off that much, I would have returned to the store and did the same as you.

Your mother sounds like mine. My mom in heaven would have made sure I was struck by lightning if I had kept the money. When it comes to money, politics, religion , and opinions, I am very honest.

Good for you! I know there are many people who would have kept that money!
I try to be honest. My conscience really bothers me if I do something that I know is wrong. It is like God is telling me that I'm doing wrong and I need to fix it.
I'm sure you felt good when you gave the cashier back the money. I'm sure she was glad that she met an honest person!
Thanks for sharing that!
God bless:)

I would have kept the extra money! I'm so horrible. I would have felt bad but that would have rubbed off. Lol I'm glad that there are still people that do the right thing. I do give money back if I realize it right at the store. Probibly not after I've left the store

I would have returned it. It would be dishonest to keep something that does not belong to you and reality that extra would have been taken out of the cashier's wages and at minimum wages, she would really suffer and is the customer does not return the money, she gets deducted. Besides, I would expect someone to be honest with me, and I expect to be honest with them.

I stand by the foundation of being honest.
I do always try to tell the truth, I believe the only times I have lied was to avoid hurting peoples feelings. (I mean seriously causing hurt) A few months back I was walking through my local supermarket, as I pushed my son's buggy through the space between myself and our cashier I noticed two money bags with around 50 pound coins in each.
Those was given back to cashier infront of myself and it turned out the £100 pound would of been coming out of her wages.
Generally if I'm given more change then I should I will give it back, unless it's little change and many in queue. ~Joey

In all honesty, I would have went back. I'm somewhat obsessive and it would make me nuts not to do the right thing. I've returned a $100 bill that some guy dropped at a gas station too.
Also about 2 years ago, my youngest brother and I went grocery shopping just before Christmas. He had just got a student loan and had about $400 with him for Christmas stuff and he accidently sat the money and his keys on a shelf while putting something in the cart and ended up walking off without it. We relized it a couple minutes later but it was already gone. He was just heartbroken. His plans for Christmas were ruined and he just felt terrible. So sometimes when you find money, it may be helping you out but hurting someone else alot more.
I also have a strong sense of right and wrong and just couldn't live with myself knowing I did something dishonest like that. Not to say that I'm better then anyone else...that's just how I am LOL
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

If she was off by that much wow. My conscioues would of ate me up but she needs to pay more attention. If she did it to you its prolly not the first time. Maybe she needs to work in a field where she doesnt handle money. I wouldnt want her to get in trouble but how in the heck could you mistake a 50.00 bill? I dont know if it would of been an inconvenience to me to drive back I dont know what I would of done it depends. If I find someones wallet and it had id I would definetly call I would be a little annoyed if they didnt thank me.

I would have loved to keep the cash; but I know I would not. On Christmas eve, in Minneapolis, while at work, my other half found a wallet in the middle of the street. It obviously belonged to a college girl (univ. of MN)and had $15 in it, ID and credit cards. We decided that I would mail it back to the address on the ID the day after Xmas, but not tell her who we were. We were worried because it would be so easy for someone to say, "hey! There was $3000. in the wallet, too." So, I mailed it back, no return address, and it required a signature upon arrival by USPS.
(I mailed it back slightly 'heavier' than it was found, too).
