Holiday Cards---Mailing or Electronic?

Are you mailing out Christmas Cards this year or just sending them electronically from your computer? With the cost of postage on the rise and being environmentally friendly, electronic cards seem the way to go. There are numerous sites that have awesome cards! Some are even animated :) And the best part is they are free...well most of them.
I do think there is something to tradition and will be mailing out a few cards but only to friends and family out of state that we don't talk to often. I usually enclose a short letter. Others will get electronic cards this year.
What will you do this year? Send out electronic cards or mail out the real deal to your friends and family?
Happy Holidays to you and yours!

As most of my friends and relatives are not on the internet, nor do they have a computer, most if not all mof my Christmas and Holiday cards go by post. I actually prefer it myself, even tho' I am obviously on the net, I still enjoy receiving cards through the post, I love hanging my cards up around Christmas along with the other decorations, it's part of the Christmas tradition and I will always continue to pop my cards in the post for years to come.

Hey Wolfie--there is something to be said about tradition. I think it is great to keep some going. All of the elderly folks in the family do not do computers, so I still mail out a few here.
Shaggin--You have a great idea handing out your cards during the holiday season. Postage is crazy now!

When I think about how many cards probably go to the landfill each year its upsetting as well as its expensive with postage to send cards in the mail. Since I have children now each year I send everyone a card with the childrens pictures in it. I usually have about 80 or more to give out but at least 50% are hand delivered so it saves on postage. I just pass the cards out at the holiday family get togethers. I personally do not like e-cards at all to me they are so much less sentimental. I always hang up my Christmas cards around the house as well it is a free way to decorate:) My daughter loves helping me get the pictures in the cards and the cards in the envelopes and put the stamps on the envelopes.

I still mail out Christmas Cards because I usually personalize them with my own writing and include the children's pictures. Although, I usually hand them out during our family gatherings, I don't mail them out. If I don't see them around the holidays, that's when I mail them out.
If it's friends that I only know through the computer, I will send them an electronic Christmas Card.

I understand many of the arguments being made here in favor of e-cards however, nothing can ever really replace the good old fashioned warmth of getting a physical card in the mail with handwriting on it that you could even display for the holidays!
Most of my family who send cards will also include a family letter detailing many of the recent events and plans and sometimes photos are included. Unless you have a lot of family members you want to send cards off to it doesn't really get to costing that much compared to most peoples cable bill. If feel you must save money maybe you could go without that for a few months eh? I know I have been putting up with free TV for a very long time now. If I really must have a program I can't get over the air then there is always the internet to turn to for shows. My DSL only costs me $15 and you can't get cable for that!
Plus, I love the postal system and the stamps themselves. Philately is a fun although dying hobby. Still I like to see the envelops with all those cool commemorative/christmas stamps on them. Some collectors even keep the covers (envelopes with stamp(s) and addresses) as a collectible items.
All in all if Christmas cards are replaced by the e-cards eventually I will certainly miss them.

EVery year I say that next year I will cut back on my Christmas cards...but next year comes and my list grows!! It is a tradition that I completely enjoy. It is a time when I can wish my family and friends the best of holidays and do it with a personal touch. I send about 300 cards and each one is hand addressed and includes a personal note. Although it takes an enormous amount of time and money and effort...I still really enjoy it. I do alot of the writing in the evening when it's quiet and I have time for reflection and recalling good times I have had with the person I am writing to. It offers me a chance to relive alot of wonderful memories and the opportunity to thank each of my family, friends and co workers for the great support, love and fellowship they have afforded me over the year. It is my only chance to communicate with some, in writing, and it adds an element of connection for me. I know it may sound crazy to most..but I fuss about having so much to do, yet won't give up this tradition. I try to support card companies that endorse and participate in recycled products...but have some hesitation about the impact on the environment...so when I am done with this "session" with MyLot, I will be back at the kitchen table, pen in hand, sending out my greetings. I have no problem with anyone sending electronic cards, or with people who send no cards at all...for me it's just a personal preference that is part of my Christmas tradition!!! Tis the season and I hope you all enjoy it!!!

I should clarify that I send cards to all the people that are part of my husband's organization..so that is about 150 cards every year...the rest can vary from 150 to 175 in family and friends. We are blessed to have a huge family and many friends we have met throughout our many years of volunteering and through raising our children...My adult children's friends are now married with children and I still send them cards!! I'm a little nuts about it...but someday I won't be able to afford it and then I won't do it!!! My husband jokes that if he quit his job, I would have less cards to send!!!LOL

I prefer the old, classic mail card. And I like to deliver them live to a friend or a family member.

With the exception of a few people..the ones that, gasp, don't have computers, I'm sending e-cards to folks..it does save money between the cost of cards and postage..way too much!

I have over the years shifted from mailing cards to sending cards via the internet. I love the animations and the feelings one can convey vide an ecard in comparsion to a paper card being sent by post. Moreover the time taken to deliver the same is much less when sent via internet. Convey your feeling in the most innovative way and instantly using the net.

I mailed cards to everyone this year. My mom took a picture of my son and I went and had them made into Christmas cards with the snowflake background. Then I mailed them to everyone. Everybody that I've talked to that got it said oh I love the card and he's so cute on it. I'm glad I mailed out cards this year so everybody that doesn't get to see my son often can see how big he's getting and what he looks like now.

This is the first year I've lived outside of my parents house so I was really excited to send out cards. I don't just send run of the mill cards though. Instead, I used snapfish to make photo cards and had 4 of my wedding pics printed. I plan to do this every year, pick out pictures from the year's events, and make photo cards. This way I don't feel like people will just toss them, they can save them in their photo album :-D
I sent out about 33 cards this year, but so far only got 12 back. I'm waiting to see who sends them back from year to year to decide who will keep getting them in the future :)

I'm doing a little bit of both. I can't afford the postage to send to everyone throught the regular mail and not everyone has a computer or e-mail account. I prefer real cards but the e-cards are kind of fun too.

I've done both e cards and real cards. Yes, postage is high but since I'm working part time I don't know what to do with my new found riches...lol....so I bought some stamps for my holiday cards.

If you are mailing to the office staff email is fine but anyone else no it has to be mailed and stamped not metered. Christmas cards are personal. I send a note in every Christmas card I write. it is special for that person. If they are not important enough to send a real one to then dont send one at all.

Hi kareng I havent sent Christmas cards out in a couple of years now. I usually put a card in my present but only to my family members. Mailing cards is too expensive anymore. Ive never done the electronic ones.

I think electronic cards seem impersonal. I love it when I get a card in the mail and we hang them up around the house. It's nice to walk by and open them and see them signed by a loved one.
You're right though it is expensive and perhaps not environmentally friendly, but it does warm the heart!

I will be mailing a few cards out and some ecards but not many. I do not send cards out like I use to. I do not think people appreciate them like they use to.
