This cartoon basically rounds up everything we were discussing during one of my classes today. Everything has to be PC now, I started a discussion on this the other day (http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/1345745.aspx - :( no responses yet) and today we were discussing it again.
We decided that if the Christmas tree has to be called a holiday tree then the menorah must be called the holiday candle. Then we discovered that our school is now calling the tree a Winter tree instead and figured, okay...winter candle. What do you think? I liked the cartoon so I thought I'd share.

Hello Crazyredhead,
First, let me welcome you to MyLot. I hope you enjoy your time here.
I will admit that I'm somewhat surprised that your class was having a discussion about political correctness. May I ask if you attend public or private school?
I'm really very disappointed that PCism has gotten so out of control. It serves but four basic functions:
1. To force people to bottle up their thoughts & beliefs. So, instead of fostering debate about how respectful or disrespectful a particular supposition might be, people live under a blanket of fear that their thoughts will cost them a job, or land them in a courtroom. Of course, after something has been bottled up for long periods of time, when it does sneak out it tends to do loaded with lots of pent up emotion as well.
2. It helps to keeps lawyers employed.
3. It robs people of their adaptability, i.e. we used to have much tougher skin, and could adapt to a wider range of circumstances and incidence, without getting all wigged out.
4. It empowers certain groups of people to control others.
I submit that the greatest strides this country (the USA) experienced in the battle against racism (for example) was a direct result of the t.v. character, Archie Bunker from "All in the Family". As educational and as affecting as that show was, there is no way that a show like that would ever see the light of day in today's PC world. So, as I see it, PCism is actually counter productive.
Love the cartoon, by the way. I'm kinda' surprised that N.O.W. hasn't already jumped on the 'womenora' band wagon. Oh wait, now that the cartoon is out there, it shouldn't be too long before this holiday symbol joins the long list of other discouraged thoughts & ideas.
Just out of curiosity, what direction did your classroom discussion take? In other words, were any conclusions reached?
Thanks for the chuckle, and the great topic!

Merry Christmas to you too! Maybe with so many of our generation thinking it's so ridiculous...we can change things. It's real far from now but ya never know.

I go to a public high school. I am a senior and the class is a Wisconsin history class with a few juniors but mostly seniors in it. The teacher is the sh!t and we usually get off topic real well, somehow he always manages to get back on topic. I agree that it is counter productive. We now have a Winter tree instead of a holiday or Christmas tree in our commons so my friends and I decided to write Christmas tree on a piece of paper and added it like an ornament. My entire class agrees that you should be able use things like the Christmas tree and the menorah and other holiday things and not have to worry about if other people get 'offended'. We usually have quite a bit of fun and good discussion in that class.

The worst part is, they'll probably try to make a womenorah. I mean look at gender issues for one, it's not that hard to imagine someone trying to make a deal out of it. I'll close with a long drawn out "why" type of sigh.
Sigh.... -_-

It's about time someone realized how offensive the 'menorah' is to women! And why can't they ever have a 'summer tree'? Why is it all about winter? That is discriminating, don't you think? Where are the snow women? Why is it a Male reindeer that saves the day and gets Santa through the fog? Why does Santa go by himself and leave Mrs Claus at home? I guess he figures that's where she belongs- at home, probably barefoot and pregnant while the Man goes out and works. He probably expects her to bring him his slippers and the newspaper the second he walks through the door. What a sexist jerk! He better lose some weight and stop saying demeaning things about women- ho ho.
Merry Christmas!
