I've failed my exams for the FIRST time in my whole life!

The results of my final examinations in university was released in the morning today. I was nervous as I went to uni to check my results. When I logged on to the computer and checked my results, for the first time in my life a feeling of chill and disappointment filled me. History is made as I failed in one paper for the first time in my life. Even the other two papers that I sat for were far from the result I had expected, but fortunately I still passed both of the other papers. I told my parents about it and they seem to be quite disappointed in me even though they tried to console me throughout our conversation. What am I to do now to cope with this disappointment? I feel like a total failure.... =(

Oh I am sorry to hear that, I know it is very disappointing, I was always used to that as I was not clever at school but I have always felt exams are not everything as I have learnt through my life, you are being tested on facts and figures and you when you leave most of those facts and figures you will never use and they won't help you at all, what they should really be teaching is common sense and positivity, anyway just remember you will still do well in life... I am sure of that.

Thanks for your response and also for the encouragement....still, I feel that I've let my parents down and I find it hard to forgive myself of that....anyway, I think I qualify for the supplementary paper, and boy, I "guarantee" I'll pass that!

Thanks for your response. It's easy to say take it easy, but when I think of the money that my parents have to waste just for me to complete uni studies, I feel that I could have somehow studied harder and passed.....

You have to move on... I will be having a tough set of exams in 24 hours or so. I may be in the same boat as you are now, very soon, God forbid! But then, that's life. In everything, there is a lesson to be learned. Don't lose it. Remember tp always put your better foot forward. There are only two of them, make sure you know which one it is. Cheers!

Repeating is not too good since my parents will have to fork out more money. Failing in this supplementary means I have to redo the subject again, which will waste me one year and my parents' money. But I hope the supplementary went well. Will update on how I did when the results are out! =)

You know what you have to do now. It can be a lesson in itself. Pick your feet up and this time apply yourself more. Life wont end here. Infact it might help you. Your records are permanent. If you make a come back your future employers will see you dont give up. I hired a man like that and he was a great employee.

Actually, my results were pretty OK since first year in uni and I have been aiming to do an honours project, but this blow has wiped away all chances of me doing this project now....and the thing is I really want to do this project....I'm really frustrated and confused now! =(

If you did your best then you should stop worrying about the disappointment you encountered in your parents' eyes. Such guilt reflects how much you crave for your parents' approval - although there's nothing wrong with pleasing your parents, if it goes as far as distressing you when you could not have done better then it's already holding you down :)
There's always a first time for everything! Don't worry about their disappointment and just keep doing your best :)
Thanks for the response on my discussion!

Thanks for the encouragement! It's not that I crave for my parents' approval; I think I'm stressing myself out because I hate to see my parents disappointed and I realize the large amount of money they've put into my education. Anyway, this is not a problem anymore, because it's a thing of the past. I took the supplementary paper and I passed it, and continued on and graduated from university just last month. All the responses in this discussion has been an inspiration to me, and I thank everyone for that. But now comes the "horror" of starting my working life, which definitely is taking its toll on me......

You may not "crave" for it but you work hard to meet their expectations :D I'm glad you got over it though. And welcome to the working world! I was a fresh grad last year and I'm in my first employment, it's not so bad as long as you enjoy what you're doing :D

Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. I can understand your feeling.
I'm an university student, too. And my final exams is coming. I always take it too serviously, then making myself feel very anxious during that period. Sometimes it make me faile in falling asleep...lol...I'm afraid of the failure in the exam...That would make everything worse...Hope I can pass all the exams.
Anyway, everything will be OK. Just never give up.

As long as you've put enough effort in studying, I'm sure you'll pass. I think my problem is I think I know a lot, but actually I don't....which probably led me to fail in my exams....I guess the lesson to me is to use my time wisely to study instead of wasting time to do other useless things....

That's true. In fact, I think failure actually teaches an individual more and we can learn more from failures. It is also a lesson of how to pick up ourselves after a "blow" like this. Thanks for the encouragement, I will not give up, that's for sure! I'll give my all for the supplementary! =)

You'll get over this in due time Gerald. Plus you have the materials so you can find out what you did wrong, learn, and then do it properly the next time. Its a growing experience.
But I must admit, failure doesn't sit well with me either. Probably because so much is put on succeeding, its virtually everywhere.
Just relax and don't strain too much over it, it'll help nothing. You have to focus on learning from this and improving for next time.

Yeah, you're right. In this dog eat dog world, I think many would hate to experience failure and defeat. But I really feel that it is failures that will actually teach us more than what we get passively....I hope I don't strain myself because I still haven't got over the feeling of disappointment, in a sense....

Dear, as a student i can totally understand your feelings. but the old saying indicates, whatever happens, it happens for a reason. just think of it, did you have a best try? if you tried your best, just relaxed and check into what made your failure.
as we students, it is hard for us to fail in one or two examinations out of our student life. Tommorrow is anther day.i can figur out you are a girl with siginficant responsibility. just face it!
i failed many times in my elementary school, senior high schoo and even my college period, but i am confident in my future, now i am a MBA student after four years' work.
Relaxed, everything will be ok next day!
don't be upset again or your parents will more concerned about you. if you are a really strong girl, you can make it! Go for it!

do not be disappointed and do not lost hope. its just an examination...
i also failed an examination before in my college days.. and i retake that subject because i failed... the day when i have in my hand the result that i failed, it seems to me that my world falls down.. as i walked in to our building passageway, i feel all the shame and as if i walk without a head.. i am very very dis appointed at that time.. i even cried.. but fortunately, i have recovered.. i did not lost hope in my self. i retake the subject with high grade..
my advice to gerald_lian, disappointments are normal.. but do not prolong your disappointment. charge it to your experience in life..and move on.. think positive... we can learn through our failures...

Thanks for your advice and encouragement. I can see where you're getting from, but the first big blow is always the hardest to recover from....I am still recuperating, but I think I'll be fine in a few days time....I will definitely learn from this failure, I'm sure about that!

Don't feel too bad...as long as the results are not out, there is still a possibility that you'll pass. For me, the results are out, and I have no choice but to accept failure for the first time....=(

Hi,there! Sorry to hear that you failed your exam.I could understand your feeling right now.I just wanna say one exam doesn't mean everything. What's more, the result was just the history.Don't think about it too much now.Maybe you can take the exam for the second time and before the exam, try your best to review the course.I think if you do your best, you'll make it finally. It doesn't help to regret now.All you can do is to make your efforts for the second time exam:) Best wishes and good luck! Take it easy and have a nice day!

I know it's been a year past, but sometimes we have to taste failure. We can't have everything, y'know.
Besides, it's just an exam. Exams don't define who one is. We're more than what the report card/transcript/paycheck says we are. Infinitely more.

Oh, it is a bad experience. When I was in university, I have such experience as you. I also remember that when I know I don't pass all the exams I was too disappointed. Time could make everything better. Such failure may teach you too much.
