Is your job affected by the Holidays?

I'm a cake decorator. I specialize in wedding cakes, but this time of year, sometimes I do more other jobs than wedding cakes. I also decorate christmas cookies, rice krispie squares and make chocolates. Doing a variety of things helps pass the time, but can also add stress when you feel pulled in a million directions and lots of people want a piece of you! LOL. Does your job get busier for the holidays?

I just want a piece of your goodies. LOL! Many of us seem to be busier, but after reading some of your posts I can just feel the stress that could be piling up. It surely cancels any sweet tooth you might have. Since my jobs are people focused, the holiday seasons do change it,but not in the way you feel it. My school job, from the middle of October through the Middle of February, seems to be sugar powered, with an ample dose of imagination!! It gets especially highly wound up between Thanksgiving and Christmas, of course. I do not know how to change it. I will also say that for children, anything is a chance to celebrate!! Birthdays, and show and tell and holidays, and new babies in the house. My job with adult disabled people also gets easily wound up, on a week by week basis. They present holiday plays and have Christmas parties, and Christmas lists. Any of our 150 clients gets sick, we all make cards. Every meal is a celebration. If they are on a restricted diet, being allowed to make a goody or two is a real joy. We will take about thirty clients out of town to Christmas shop and eat out this week. We will go downtown three times for movies, there will be three different Christmas parties next week, they already had the one with staff and families and a catered meal last week. One of the principles of that job is that we are all here to have fun and celebrate life. Sometimes tiresome if one staff member does most of the transportation, etc. though. Especially in the evenings after a day job. I think our expectations of ourself, and our employers' expectations, are what really build up the stress.

Yes, my job is affected by the holidays...
I work in the tech industry and deadlines are exceptionally important....With the christmas holidays just round the corner, the deadlines have to be brought many days forward, especially when clients are going on holidays as well...
So its quite tough for me for this past weeks....

Since I just started working two weeks ago I can say not. I work for a local Dr. I am writing his policy and procedure manual so holidays has no bearings on it.

The holidays don't make my job busier, actually, I'm a seasonal firefighter for the Forestry Service, and my leave will start Dec 22nd, the 21st is my last day of work, until we go back to work March 17th. Which I'm really enjoying the thought of being off work for Christmas, since I've had to work the past 3, at another job. But, I have worked retail before, and at Christmas it gets really hectic, so hopefully you don't let it get too stressful for you. Happy Holidays

esther, those are darling! do you work out of your home or at a bakery?
my husband's job slows down this time of year - with several days off before Christmas and then only one day after Christmas is worked (inventory) until the first week in January (not sure which day he goes back - probably wednesday or the following monday even.) this would not be too bad if it was all paid days off!
my work load increases it seems, but it is all housework doncha know?

I am in the finance sector, and so in a way, it is affected by the holidays. Every one wants to close their books at year end. Everyone wants to have a share of the anticipated bonus. Everyone wants to start afresh. In fact, the last day of the year is the busiest for me most of the time.

Wow, that's interesting! Yup, my job is still affected by the holidays...it means that we have two full weeks vacation from school, starting December 20 up to Jan 7. So it means I'm having a vacation from work during the holidays...

I've not really noticed one way or the other. The freelance market for me has had its moments. I think to be perfectly honest, it's actually for me gone up slightly. I've had more work the last 2 months than I had before hand.

Quite busy, but not like yours. Busy with the preparation of year end report, finishing all jobs before the year end, home obligations. All workers are busy as the year is ending, inventories, balances, personnel report, meetings, budget preparation and also party preparation of the holidays. I like the picture of the rice cookies. Happy Holidays!

My job is seasonal, but not for the holidays. I'm a CPA so it's going to get kinda hectic in a couple months. And it does seem like everyone wants a peice of me!!!

Well I work with developmentally disabled adults, so I guess I get the usual Christmas stress times 2. Instead of decorating one house I do 2, instead of shopping for one family I shop for my guys, instead of cooking one dinner, I do 2.
We just have more activities, but we don't get that much more hours for it.

It sure effects my jobs. I'm in the taxi business and dispatch is hectic and annoying at this time of year. I also drive taxi and it is really busy this time of year which is great but the traffic is also worse and a trip to a mall could take 15mins to get out of the parking lot! I for one will be happy when January rolls around. Merry Christmas anyways...

Hi estherlou! I make handmade cards and some crafts. During holidays, I have an increased sales in terms of orders. Just like you, I feel the stress each time I am beating the deadline however, Almost all my orders were already delivered and only a few left to be due this week and the coming week. I guess, this is the time of season when everyone really gets busy not only with work but in the preparation for the Christmas festivity within the home. Take care and have a nice day. :)
