Do you have bats where you live?

I live in Florida in the middle of the woods. I have never seen bats here. Since we built the tiki hut, we haven't used our umbrella in a while. Last weekend when I asked my husband to open the umbrella there were three tiny bats inside! Look at the picture.
Are there bats in your neighborhood?

Where I live you see the flying fox bats flying out (over my house)to find food around 6pm every night. I actually am a member of a wildlife organisation known as WILD LIFE ARC & Ive had hands on experience..I care for flying foxes until they're able to be released back into the wild. When you get to know them they're such fascinating little creatures..they clean themselves like a cat & have the same temperament as a dog. Its a very sad moment when you have to release them as you've raised them from babies & generally have them for 4-5 months, so you become very attached to them. I love them so much, they're absolutely gorgeous.

Really? So, I guess I'll have to worry about my grapefruit tree when it gets big enough to produce.

In our neighborhood there are no bats, but I have visited people who had quite a few. On fellow had quite a few as pets in his home, in fact. They were really cute. On the other hand, everyone has heard horror stories about bats. Are they true? Are there some places in the world where the bats bite babies and are rabid and kill people? Or are bats harmless. This is the perfect place to get good answers to those questions, too, because here on myLot we have people from all over the world. What an exciting question!
We used to have flying squirrels where we lived and for me it was a treat to see them swoop down, but once a friend was visiting and she mistook the squirrel for a bat and ran screaming. This is why:

I think the bats are pretty harmless. I was sitting right beside them fishing most of the day and they didn't even try and come down off the umbrella. (the umbrella is near my pond)
What a cute photo of the flying squirrel! My great Aunt had one as a pet. I don't remember him very well because I was only about 4 when I knew her.

Yup we have bats living in our attic! They don't bother me except when one of them escapes in the house! Then I *protect* the kids while hubby lets him out. I don't know what I'd do if hubby wasn't home. LOL Probably run to a bedroom with the kids, close the door and hide!
Our first night in this home was our first experience with Mr. Bat! I heard something fly over our bed but thought, nah it's just my imagination but then hubby said Did you see that? Well I freaked and panicked and wouldn't come out from under the blankets until he found the bat, which of course he didn't! We assumed he just went back home. The next evening I heard them in the attic and then witnessed them flying in and out. I'm ok when they're flying about outside but just can't handle them inside! Go figure!
They ARE creepy looking although relatively harmless. I've heard their poop can be toxic but I don't know for sure... regardless, I'm not planning on tasting it anyways!

Yes, we have bats here too. But they are harmless. I would rather have bats then have mice. They won't bother you and they eat bugs like flies and mosquitos. So I really don't mind having them. They don't build nests in your house, only outside. They don't ever come into the house. They aren't like you used to think as children, they don't attach themselves to your hair. They are just as afraid of you as you are of them.

A few years back, we lived in a house on a state fishing lake. Viewing wildlife was one of my favorite pastimes while living there. Sometimes we would camp on the shore and sit by the fire late into the evening. It was not uncommon for bats to swoop back and forth catching all of the evening bugs and mosquitoes. Bats are amazing mammals. Many people mistakenly classify bats as birds because they fly, but they actually magnificent mammals.

Mosquitoes! Yeah! I'm building a bat house. We have way too many mosquitoes here in Florida.
