What does God want from us?

As I write this I'm aware that there are many here who believe in more than one God and in Goddesses as will, and I mean to include everyone in the discussion. Do you believe that your God requires you to perform certain rituals? why would God require that of you? Many Christians believe that God requires us to be baptised with water. What do you think would be God's reason for wanting that? Others believe that God wants us to spent hours calling on his name and praising him with uplifted hands. Why? Again others think that God wants them to belong to one religion or church, and that he will punish them if they choose the wrong one. Why? Would it not make more sense that any being as great as many people believe God is, to want us to live together in peace, helping one another and making our time here a better experience for everyone. Wouldn't this be real worship? Some say that one day is better than another, and that you must be careful of what you do on that day, one says that day is Sunday, others will tell you it's Saturday or some other day. Why shouldn't we be expected to live a certain way every day? God doesn't want us to dance, God will send us to hell if we smoke, God hates Gays. On and on we hear this litany of what wants, doesn't want, hates, loves. A book could be written just listing the various things that people believe God wants or doesn't want. Friends, we are all children of the universe and it is quite probable that there is a purpose behind our being here. Not one of us is perfect, not one of us is so bad, that he/she doesn't deserve our love and our help. There is a reason why we are what we are. God, Gods, Goddess, universal mind, the x factor, call it what you will, is far greater than anything we can imagine, don't make him as small as to believe that he/she/it thinks like us. We are here to enjoy life and we can enjoy it best if we help others do the same. Blessings.

Hello, POse!God or Goddeses never want any thing from us. it is our religions want something from us.there are some code of conducts, prescribed by all religions and we are simply following them without understanding the meaning.has anybody seen god coming down to earth and asked you to do any thing for him.no.god has gifted us with brain, power and worldly pleasures like love. we are supposed to utilise those for the good of ourselves and for the bettermence of the society without being involved in selfish motives.service to mankind is service to god, thats all he desires from all of us.it is the essence of all religions.so with a view to live in this world peacefully we should be tolerant to all religions and all people living in this earth.thanks lot and be happy.

Hi bbsr, Thank you so much for responding. It is a pleasure to read your comments. Of course God wants nothing from us. Why would he? There is a basic truth in all religions, if we can find it under all that man has added over the centuries. You say that service to man is service to God. You are very close to that truth my friend, perhaps as close as any of us will come in this lifetime. Blessings.

Hi Pose123! Yes, we all have different beliefs and practices but that should not make us be indifferent with one another. I believe that one way or another we are all connected. For me, we are all brothers and sisters, whatever religion we may have or culture or race or whatever. We all believe in a God and we may call Him differently. We may believe that this is hwat He wants from us according to the Books we all hold dear in our hearts. I am no expert in religion as well as in my own religion although I was raised and schooled with the Order of St. Benedict, a Catholic order. Deep in my heart, I know that my God is very loving and merciful and I know that He only wants us to love Him back and to love one another. I have a simple faith and I don't want to complicate it anymore. I just want to hold on to Him and hope that one day, we can all be with Him. Just my thoughts. take care and have a nice day. :)

Its actually a question of your faith whatever our religion is., as long as we believe in God with whole mind, heart and soul. We will do right things that pleases him, worship him and believe in his power. We are only humans committing sins and our thinking is perhaps based on human standards,we are not perfect only God is perfect.
We dont own our lives and we are only here temporary. Fear to God and following him is our way of showing our love.
God Bless!

I believe that Gods want us to allow Him to love us and for us to love Him. He wants what is best for us. We can show our love for him by loving ourselves and each other. If we would listen to him more we would be healthier and happier. That is what he wants for us. Babaptisem is washing away an old life and starting a new one. You wrote Others believe that God wants us to spent hours calling on his name and praising him with uplifted handsI don't know why unless it is reaching for Him. I don't think that God cares which churh a person attends as long as they love and worship Him. I do believe that he does have a special day that he wants us to rest and spend with Him. He said rmember the Sabbath and keep it holy. He does want us to love one another and in doing so we show our love for him.

Micah 6 : 8 immediately comes to mind. "He has shown thee oh man what is good, and what does the Lord require of thee. But to act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with thy God." There are 3 aspects that are mentioned here. These are completely well aligned with the greatest two commandments. These of course are to love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul and mind and to love your neighbour as yourself.
Clearly, we are to love God and give our due reverence and devotion to Him. In doing that we are clearly told that the best way to achieve this aim is to worry about the needs of others well before we worry about meeting our own needs. Obedience and sacrificial service towards others is the way to go. The golden rule also comes to mind. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. The trouble with some people is that their idea is to be selfish and, uncaring and to exploit others. Their motto is do unto others before they do unto you.
It will be interesting to read what other writers say in this thread.

Hi paul, Thank you for responding. I was actually thinking of that quote from Micah, while I was writing the post, and wondered if someone would mention it. Of course I could never disagree with the golden rule, as it is the yardstick for living, no matter what religion we follow. Blessings.

If God is God then he/she/it/spoon wants for nothing. Such a condition is not possible. We are part of the evolving process of Spirit, and the manifestation of the level of evolution we find ourselves at includes the responsibility to know what we are. All religions have, at their core, two central messages.
One - All problems in your life, whatsoever, are caused by a false identification with one of the perceived objects or thoughts (which are a form of object) in your life.
Two - The solution to all problems is to find out the truth of what you actually really, really are.
The method is to look. As often as possible, whenever convenient, get in touch with the very fact that you are, and develop an appreciation for the 'taste' of being. That will, in time, reveal what you are. And, that knowledge will release you from the habit of false identification.
All injunctions of all religions laid over that core teaching are meant to either make the pursuit of the truth easier. Or, to help with personal hygiene. Or, to shore up the power base of those in authority. It is always easier to secure self preservation when you are not working alone, and one very easy way to do that is to set up an "us versus them" mentality.
What does God want from us? Nothing. God is. What do we want? To find the truth of what we are. When we do that, we are face to face with the truth of our own existential absence in the light of the one thing which is, which is God (or Goddess, or Spirit, or Flying Spaghetti Monster, or uber-Cabbage, or whatever.)

And, of course, the paradox is you cannot find out what you are since you already are. As long as we live in a seeking mode, we cannot find. If we did, then we would not be seeking. We can only be at peace when we make the leap into the one who has not found because there is nothing to find, the one who simply is.

My Gods want a lot of me it seems. :P
They want me to balance my physical life and my spiritual life. They want me to live with honor. They want me to believe in them and make them a part of my life. They want me to continue to live in order to play out the role they created for me, to protect others.
The Goddess I have dedicated myself to above all others I call Mother, though she has another name. She is both kind and harsh. She expects me to walk a warrior path in a modern world in which I am not literally a warrior. Eh.
I don't believe the Gods want the same thing from everyone, and I don't believe that people are punished for not believing in the right Gods. I do, however, think that once we discover the paths we are supposed to be on, certain things are expected of us.

Yes, there are definitely many paths.
My very wise great-grandfather said "Your path can only be your own, no one else may walk it. Those you teach may walk beside you, or around you, or above or below you, but they will never be on the same path."

Religions have created a great deal of confusion ,but at the same time this is what makes us unique. It would be a very boring world if everyone had the same beliefs, and rituals. On the other hand the main thing is that we are here for a purpose and love is the most important thing that we can offer others. Nobody is perfect so we all need to be tolerant with one another.

Great post pose123! I get the impression from what you've written here that our beliefs are very similiar. However, I tend to disagree with your final premise that God doesn't believe as we do. My reasoning on this matter goes like this, because we are the children of God and part of God, God is forced by us into hating this or that, forced into requiring this or that and just maybe that is the greatest "sin" of all. I think many religions and many people force God into doing things by worshipping a dogma or book above and beyond worshipping the Creator of the universe. I realize that by judging others I am judging myself and I am willing to judge myself and find myself at fault. Identifying a problem is the first step in correcting it. I believe if more of us become willing to examine our own beliefs and correct our own flaws the world will become a better place. Free will requires self control. Those that are ready will free their own minds and seek wisdom.

God do not depends on our acts, If we do not pray, worship him or if we object him, nothing will happen to God.
But God created us, he gave life to us and he gave directions to live here, that we are supposed to follow.
Islamic belief says that, We have to believe in one God, his directions, worship & pray to him only and do good deeds.

well I believe our purpose in life is to find full enlightenment for every indivuidual. there is no higher religion than the truth. but what is the truth? will we ever know? I dont think anyone will know the truth untill its time to know. So what I do is study anything and everything old religions new religions and take what my heart and soul tell me is right. for the gays, smoking, and dancing part that you wrote only "god" can judge so why do we as humans keep judging ppl even if you are a christian and it says in the bible not to judge? Why dont we just live freely among each other without trying to control what another is doing? I dont think that we need to perform certain rituals, or do ceartian things to be holy in the eyes of god (if thats how you think) Just follow whats right in your heart, your eyes, your soul, and your mind. thats why god gave them to us. We as ppl have started this ritual of judging, going to church, etc. etc. b/c it has been hammered in our mind for so many years by the cathlioc church and others that thats what we are supposed to do. People need to thank for themselves and start reliezing that a lot that they think is supposed to happen or there supposed to do was made by man not god. the bible was written by man, put together by man, added and deleted to by man but we follow it like its gods purpose. Why is that? when will we follow our own brains instead of the brains of others that want control?

I do believe in a Supreme Being and since we cannot form a better word we call this unseen; G'd. I do not believe that G'd is vengeful. I do not believe that He makes any demands of us that we cannot fulfil. Therefore, He will not punish us for not fulfilling them.
I do think that we should be thankful for all the beauty that He has surrounded us with everyday and that we should respect what He has given us.
We should use the gifts that He has given us wisely. We should not waste the earth's resources or pollute it the way we have. We are only destroying ourselves by doing so.
In the end when we die, I think we still will have a choice. I do not believe that if we have not lives a perfect life that we are automatically damned for all time. I think we will still have a chance to make amends with our Maker even at the final moments.
I believe that life is a learning experience for the next step:the afterlife. We do not know what that will be. We speculate, but no one has come back to tell us so, it will remain a mystery til it is our final turn!

Hey, Pose. Great discussion here! Hopefully I can answer some of your wonderful questions. God was, is, and always has been. He is the Creator and Ruler of the Universe. As you said in your discussion, He is better and far greater than anything our finite minds can comprehend or even imagine.
In answer to your first question, God doesn't require us to "perform certain rituals" per se. If life were all about completing certain obligations, how boring and unfulfilling would that be!
God requires baptism after salvation to show others what He has done for the individual and to demonstrate that person's obedience and submission to Him. That is the only purpose of baptism by water.
God doesn't want us to spend hours speaking to Him, but He, like anyone else in this world loves hearing from us! We enjoy talking to other people throughout our day; therefore, He enjoys hearing from us. It's not required for us to talk to Him at all, but I know from personal experience that I have a much better day when I start it off by talking to Him. He has the ability to answer any and all of our requests if He so chooses. He only has our best interests in mind because He knows everything!
God wants us to praise Him because...well, think of it this way. Hypothetically speaking, let's say you painted a beautiful picture. It took you about two years to complete, and it's the most glorious thing the human eye could comprehend. You displayed your work of art in the most-visited art gallery in the country only to find that people were taking it out of the display case to throw it to the ground and stomp on it. They would spit on it and laugh at it. To you, this is one of your most prized possessions. To others, they couldn't care less how much time you put into it. Wouldn't you rather be praised for your work and told that you are the best artist that was ever born? God is the Creator of the Universe and all we see. Look around you - everything you see was created by Him. Don't you think God would want us to praise and thank him for giving us such a beautiful earth to live in. I know at times we can see the ugliness that mankind has made of it, but ultimately God is the One responsible for everything good that exists. Although He doesn't require it, I think He deserves to be at least thanked for what He's done, don't you?
God doesn't want us to belong to a religion. He only wants us to belong to Him since He created us. If we ignore our Creator, how sad He would feel. God wants us to be a part of a church that we love and enjoy because we have the opportunity to share our thoughts and beliefs with other people. Fellowship is an important part of our lives. If you went for a few years without talking to anyone, what a mess that would be!
You are correct when you say real worship is helping others and making the lives of others as pleasant as possible. That's what life is about! God loves to see us helping other people because they see Him through us. We are showing God's love to others when we do things like that. That's all God wants of us is to demonstrate His love to others. You'd be surprised at how many people have no idea how loving God is! He's not ready to condemn anyone or make sure they get struck with lightning. He's forgiving, loving, caring, smiling.
As far as one particular day of the week being better than another, I don't agree with this because every day we are given is from God. We should enjoy all of our days. He doesn't want us to go through life dreading waking up in the morning! He wants us to be happy. Part of being happy means that our lives are balanced with the things we enjoy. For instance, we should spend a balanced amount of time working, sleeping, eating, doing things for leisure, etc. We shouldn't always be sleeping because we won't be fulfilled. If we were always helping others, we wouldn't get enough sleep.
God will not kill us if we smoke or do something He doesn't agree with. He's very loving and forgiving. If He were really out to destroy us, we would've been gone a long time ago! He doesn't send anyone to hell either. He doesn't hate gays, and He doesn't hate anyone. Some things we do He hates, but He never hates people. He created people - how could He hate what He created? That wouldn't make sense.
You are correct when you say we are here for a reason. Yes! We are here to encourage each other to be better people. We are here to show love to others as God has shown to us. Some people may not see God as a loving person, but we are still here, which means He has had mercy on us to allow us to still be here!
You are perfectly correct, and I quote, "We are here to enjoy life and we can enjoy it best if we help others do the same." You hit the nail on the head, my friend. I can see your tender and kind spirit through the conclusion of your discussion. I hope my response has helped you. Thanks for the excellent post.
