Ever heard of decorating ships models instead of Christmas Tree?

As far as i know, the custom of decorating a tree with lights at Christmas period, the Christmas Tree we all know, comes from Germany. Somehow that custom exploded and conquered much of the world, so everyone who celebrates Christmas has a Christmas Tree, no matter if big or small, at his house. Where i live, in Greece, most people also decorate Christmas Trees, not only at their homes but also at work, supermarkets, etc. However, Greek custom is different...from old years, i am not sure how old, we decorate models of ships with flags and lights and keep them lighting, exactly like the Christmas Tree are. So, we place the little ship at a corner, light it and decorate it with stuff, not balls or angels like the tree, but bells, flags, etc. I must inform you though, that people who decorate ships instead of Trees at Greece are not many.Kids just love Christmas Trees, so mainly people who decorate boats dont have kids around. Had you ever heard that before? Have you ever thought about Christmas Tree and other type of decorations?What do you think about it?
