Do you eat fruitcake?

United States
December 13, 2007 2:11pm CST
Last night, I was writing a short holiday story about an unwanted fruitcake, and I found myself wondering if anyone actually ate them. I know that I actually like fruitcake, provided that it is fresh, but I know that there are a lot of people who would not touch a fruitcake with a ten foot pole. So outside of myself, does anyone eat fruitcake? And if you are curious to read the story, you can find it here: http://www.helium.com/tm/746704/sitting-doorstep-without-opening

No fruitcake for me. I have been turned off to them since I was a kid. Every Christmas there was fruitcake in the house. Ewww. It has just never appealed to me. I guess that someone has to eat them...lol...hope you get a fresh one this year!! ~~Taz~~

Yeah, it is an American thing (maybe the English do it too) around Christmas. A fruitcake is a heavy cake made with candied fruit.

you are not actually supposed to eat those they put enough booze and fossilized fruit in them things to make them last for 20 generations sooooooooooo, just exchange them for the holidays AND , if stravation times, like wars and stuff happens, then eat the fruitcake, otherwise its just a token thing to be passed along with stories to the next generations when they see that hard inedible cake, that has been passed down and traded to neighbors , for 12 generations, its proof of how lucky they are and what their ancestors had to deal with , etc.

LOL. Finally, I know the real purpose of fruitcake. "And when I was your age, we used to have to eat fruitcake--so no whining about not getting a new IPod."

Yes, I eat fruitcake. Not a lot of it,but a slice here and there. I have had some that were really good. My aunt used to make fantastic fruit cake. She would make some for us kids with gum drops instead of dried fruit.

LOL Oh my I just read your article, it's hilarious. I just love your sense of humor..wicked. Yes, I guess all our cats wonder what we strange humans want to eat strange things Love the idea of sending fruitcakes over to our soldiers to use as makeshift grenades. Okay confession time, like you I'm probably one of the rare few that actual likes fruitcake, not LOVE it, won't go so far as to say that, but I don't run and hide if someone gives me one or think of schemes of how to dispose of it graciously.

My cat likes to sniff all the food I eat; just in case, I am eating something good. He gives me some strange looks, and he runs away when I offer him fruit. Yeah, my mom could ruin perfectly good water. My father was a better cook, but he could only make a couple of things (chili and pancakes).

I love fruitcake, but I probably will not get any this year because my husband drives, I cannot afford a car, we go shopping together and he does not want me to pick one up. I am so unhappy. (:

I have to say I don't make a point of buying fruit cakes, but if someone is serving them, I'll usually eat it. Most of the people who serve it at a party or fellowship have made it themselves, so I don't have to worry about the freshness. They taste OK to me. Lord knows no one needs an old fruit cake. They have a bad rap already!

I am sure there are lots of people who love fruitcake.I know i do, my sister does, and so does my brother, and mother.I also like mincemeat pies too,and people turn up their noses at that, but all it is is raisans, and spice. The people who do not eat fruitcake has never eaten a good one.

Yeah, that is my current theory; that a lot of people have never had a good one, so they just presume that they are all bad tasting.

Hi morgandrake, First of all, I enjoyed your story immensely. Very entertaining. Actually, I too enjoy fruitcake. I much prefer the darker variety. My mom used to make a fantastic one, that became a family tradition. Unfortunately, that recipe is lost today, for those of us who remember this fondly. Enjoy the holidays, and your fruitcake.:)

I'm sorry to hear about your mom's 'cooking skills,' morgandrake. My mom was a fabulous cook. She came from a Mennonite background, and they're usually great cooks. Her fruitcake was dark and delicous, and just loaded with yummy ingredients. One of the things that made it so great, was it called for 'a strong cup of freshly brewed coffee.' No rum, though, so I can't help you there. I wish we still had my mom's recipe.:( Your cranberry walnut loaf sounds scrumptious, pyewacket. I've gotten the impression, that you're a great cook. I wonder why a couple of generations were skipped, as far as cooking goes in your family? It's wonderful that it picked up again with you.:)

morgan..are you sure we didn't have the same mother? She could burn water. My great-grandmother was THE cook of the house, a skill that seem to bypass both my grandmother and mother. Thankfully, I must have inherited my great-grandmother's skills, but alas never made a fruitcake yet...though do make a real yummy cranberry walnut bread (has about a million ingredients)

My mom could not make a decent fruitcake to save her life; then again, a lot of her cooking needed help. It wasn't until I became an adult that I learned that there were actually good fruitcakes out there. What I would like to find is a recipe for a rum fruitcake.

I like them very much. I usually go my grandma's cousin to devour her fruitcake. I like the way she makes her fruit cake. To which I miss much. Now I buy fruitcakes from bakery. But haven't tasted 1 as good as she makes it.

I have never tried to eat any of those little 'brick' fruitcakes that you see all over stores this time of year. I have tried a homemade one a few years back. I thought it was quite good actually! I was wondering at the time why they get such a bad rap. After reading through the comments though, I realize that there are good fruitcakes and bad fruitcakes!
