Books: Purchase or Borrow?

Canada
December 14, 2007 11:16am CST
My house is full of books! I can't help it! My kids love to read and I love books! And now I'm on the book store website, making a list of what I'm going to buy for Christmas! My 12 year old daughter is really enjoying all those magical series that have been released recently. My problem is I can't keep up with the purchases!! More and more come out all the time! On top of the ones I buy, we also borrow from the library. I know my daughter prefers to own the books because she tends to reread them. I just wonder what everyone else does?

I never borrow books.Nothing will replace that particular book smell and feeling as you open a new book.

I agree there something special about a brand new book however it's not always in the budget to do so. I wish it wasn't a financial matter. I wish that I could walk in that store and buy new whenever I wanted LOL

Well considering how much we love to read, we don't buy books as much as borrowing them.. In fact one time my daughter had so many books, I wondered about how many she would be allowed to take out, the Librarian said 100. I was like uh oh, my daughter just might take you up on that someday..lol So you can imagine the costs involved if we bought every book we like, we would probably be in serious debt.

Wow, that's great that your family loves to read so much. Actually it is just the girls in my family that loves to read. In fact we have had most of our things, including most of our books in storage for over a year. If the mice haven't ruined them, we have enough books for a small library..lol

Oh my I have a similar story. My daughter had asked how many books she could take out and when the answer was 99, her eyes lit the whole room. I swear! I had to put a limit, 2 bios, 5 fiction, 2 ... Hubby and I went to the bookstore over the weekend with obviously different lists in mind because we walked out of there with over $200 worth of books! I'm so glad I get a discount! LOL

Of im done with my college years long time ago and i have my all chance to read what ever i want.. purchase or borrow it doesnt matter as much as it give me more helping and enjoyable information. so is the significance of the book change if it is self purchase or borrowed, for me it doesnt matter as much as i enjoy what i read.

i usually never buy a book, unless its something i really have to read now. i go to garage sales, and the library,.. friends exchange them with me. same with movies.. not really worth all that money to purchase.

Do you keep the books once you've read them so you can reread another time or do you always exchange them? I think it's great that you have a system with your friends to share what you read!

I have always been a reader. My parents read and my oldest daughter and her husband read alot too. The rest of my family doesn't care to read. Right now I am trying to get my list of books I want to get. I used to buy books at Barnes and Noble but they are too expensive so I have gone to getting them at HalfPriced books.

I usually just go to the half priced store and buy some. I don't bother with reselling the books. I just give them away.

I've never bought anything from Half.com because I'm not sure how it works. From what I understand, it's E-bay for books however a credit card is required. Not too comfortable with that!

I swap books at paperbackswap.com. I love it. You only pay when you send one of your books off. And I can get rid of books I've already read to get some new ones that are on my wish list. IF you have books you want to get rid of it's a great thing. There are several other sites that do the same thing, but for now I just do this one site. I know bookmooch.com is another one.

Thanks for recommending this site. I was going to do some research later on such site. There are some books I own that I know I will not be rereading again so this would be great! Thanks!

I borrow a lot more than I buy, and I buy used a lot more than I buy new. But I still buy new books when it's something special or a reference of some sort. Growing up we had books and books... I don't have as many, but I still have two bookshelves full and a stack here and there.

We recently just purchased all of the Wizardology books for my daughter. Of course my husband couldn't just buy one and continue to purchase the rest later. We had to buy the whole pack which included a board game. The whole lot was over $200 without my discount. Something like this could not have been purchased used. I didn't agree with buying the whole set like this because now it looks like all she's getting for Christmas are books however it was something she really wanted so she might be ok with it. I feel bizarre about it! My husband was afraid we wouldn't be able to find the whole set again! I agree with you, I buy used a lot more than I buy new however I tend to buy new when my daughter is into a series. I've been finding it really hard to find Inkspell used!

which books?when we are in our school days my mother believe that we need to buy our own books yearly, it is until now there in my mother's house, but when it come to commercial book, like romance, novel etc.. we have to bought it for ourself because i believe we have to buy for our own luxury atleast..sometimes borrow is good.

wow I couldn't ask my children to buy their own books unless it was something extra special that I just couldn't afford or something but I would find a way to pay them back, or half, or something! I don't think books are luxuries at all but a necessity! I understand you meant fictional books were luxury and I suppose you could always borrow those too. I hope you have a love for reading today.

I grow up seeing books around. My mom seems implanted in us reading. She always tells us to read books coz it will knowledge. Before she buys books from time to time when she got spare money for it. I usually borrow books from the school library before while I was still studying. But now that I'm working. I'm buying books; since sad to say our city library here isn't adequate enough with variety of books. We can't borrow books from private schools unless we are students there. So it leaves no choice but buy some books online.

I am born in the poor family,so my parents cant afford to buy many books that i like .When i went to the school, the school is bad,it didnt own enough books to spare us.Today i come to the university which own the large amount of the books,i have the more chances to read the books i like.I own this chance so that i acquire knowledge as much as possible. But i find that the books in the library are not adequate enough to meet my need.So i must buy some books. But some books must be bought, which is able to make you better to learn.

I wasn't a reader growing up however I vowed that my children would love to learn and next thing I knew I did too! There no way to really explain how it is to be totally engrossed in a book! I'm glad you had the opportunity to have in books in your life as you were growing up! Keep Reading!

Well, there are a lot of great programs online that allow you to trade books for free. I prefer to do that, or buy used. It saves money. I'd buy them all if I could afford to, but it would just be way too pricey. I'll buy the beat up books on amazon and half.com -- I don't care what the cover looks like, as long as its legible!

If the books is important for our life and it's very meaningful, just buy the book. But if it's not too important, just borrow. not every book we will re read, right ?

You're absolutely right! We won't be rereading every single book which is why I like to purchase my books used. It's no big deal for me to spend $0.50 and then pass the book along. However when it comes to children books/novels, I know that my children will reread. I have two children so they'll each have a turn. And if it turns out that my youngest is not as interested, then I have plenty of nieces I can share these books with!

I will tend to read a book from the library first, as an introduction to an author. If I fall in love, I tend to end up buying the series. My love of books began as a child also, and maybe what she needs are bookshelves lining her room for Christmas, with just one or two books. Then when she fills the shelves, she will have to learn to cull some to make space for the new ones. Good luck!

Welcome to MyLot! You're suggestion is a good one! We have shelves all over the house, filled with books. I find it hard to get rid of books myself! When I look at all our Robert Munch, Franklin's, golden books, Little Critters... I just can't toss them. My youngest is still at an age to read them but even in a few years, I can't see me parting with these books LOL which I know is ridiculous, I can bless another child with the same memories we got from them. I think it's knowing that I scoured so many library sales, so many used books store to get every single one we have since I was a single mother at the time. Now that I've revealed my secret of not being able to part with them, I also know that my children have the same trouble. We should seriously take them to my sister's house for her little ones. Something to consider!

USED BOOK STORE for sure. They are the best. I also get a great amount of books from frenchies, if you have one in your area. They are the best and they sell theres for 25 cents to a dollar. Plus i make my 7 year old go through her books about once a month and donate them to her school library...just the ones she never really got into or didn't really enjoy. She has gotten into the fairy books recently and also my secret unicorn. Plus whatever grabbes her attention. Also at our local library they have a discard area...any old books they are getting rid of they sell for 10 cents....i don't know iif all libraries do it but it is wonderful. and they are good books. But used book stores are one of my favorite places to take my girls...you never know what kind of tresure they will find. book swavy

YES Frenchies! Love 'em! however ours here doesn't have many good books. I have purchased the odd Little House there and a few kids book. Next time you're in Fredericton, go down to the Anti Poverty store on Canada Street. The basement floor is a library of used books for sale. Children's books are a quarter and adult can range up to $2. I never walk out of there empty handed (and never tell my husband I'm going either LOL) I know our libraries have discard areas as well and I've found some wonderful treasures there as well.

Welcome! Join the gang! I've always been a book buyer and now I do it for my son too. We have books all over the house. Fortunately I have the space. I have books from my childhood (my mom threatened to dispose of them if I didn't take them home) and we keep buyng books for our son. We also borrow from the library...but that goes back...so doesn't pose a problem. To top that, my son's school gives away books as awards or prizes and my son gets quite a few each year. He's got 15 this year! I prefer my own books too especially since I re-read them. If I boroow a book from the library and like it...I will definitely go out and get my own copy.

We used to buy books earlier then we found we had too many books and storing them became a big problem.Everytime I shifted house I gave the books to the local library. Finally when I moved into an apartment.Space became a constraint so I stopped buying them instead I borrow them from the library. If I feel like rereading them I can always take it again.

Storage has been a problem in the past however it no longer is and I think my hubby regrets it :) But I really don't think it's a matter of space! Everytime I buy an armful, I go through my older ones and donate some that no longer interest me.

LOL I'm there :) Too many books, and like your daughter i do like to own them for the same reason - I often re-read them. Heck sometimes I have several of the same book, just in different languages LOL SOmetimes I do borrow books, but it's rare. I do buy second hand books often though. There is a second hand bookstore close to me, and believe me I probably keep that place going hehehehe

My husband begs me not to go to our second hand book store. This place is just as big as regular store with awesome books! He just doesn't share the same love. I'm in need for a new bookshelf however I know he'll just roll his eyes at me heehee :)

I love books if I could I will buy every book that has been writen. Before I got married I used to buy books at least 1 a week. Then when my son was born and I was often buying a book and than I would feel guilty because I could have done something better with the money (we didnt have lots of money). So I strarted going to the library a lot. Whe my son started to love books I used to take some from the library but I had to watch out that he didnt write in them or rip them. By now we were ok financialy so I started to buy him books he is now 4 (5 in april) and he has over 200 books I do get him books from second hand stores (charity) that way I am doing something for him (teaching him to love books), I am saving money and at the same time I am helping the charity. Also I have given away or sold many of my books that I didnt like that much because there was no point of them just siting there using space. Lately I have started buying new books.

It is wonderful that you have instilled a love for books in your son! Teaching children to learn what they can from books is a great way to teach them independance as well. I also love library books but with my line of work, respite worker, it's hard to keep track to make sure no one marks the books which is why we have specific books allowed on the main floor and some that have to stay upstairs.

Hi,there! I think what you said in the discussion is a problem. One can't own all the books. I do think some books we only need to read once. While some other books are really worth rereading and keeping. As we've got the libraries around us,we can go there first to take a look at the book that attract us and then decide whether it's good for us to buy and keep or not.If they're really so nice, then we buy them and keep them, sometimes we can read them again. It's really necessary to balance that.Maybe you can also talk with your kids about that and let them know the point:) Thanks for the discussion and have a nice day^_^

Thank you for your input! We often visit the library. My daughter is in love with new and old authors so it's rare she finds a book she doesn't like! She gets just as excited over Jean Little, Robert Louis Stevenson, Louisa May Alcott, Katherine Tegen, Cornelia Funke with weekly favorites! She's always coming up with new ones!

Mine are also mostly used. All of my daughter's Babysitter's Club, Little House, etc. were used. But now that she's older, it seems more appropriate to purchase new especially since she rereads and I knew she will keep these books for as long as she can!
