Are you a fan of kits or just loose elements?

I've realised that quite a number of scrappers order kits. One advantage is that everything is nicely coordinated in a set. And there are discounts when one subscribes to monthly kits for three months for instance. But sometimes I feel that kits restrict creativity. In the sense that everything is already matched. And there is less scope for you to be different. Layouts made from the same kit tend to look similar, since they have the same stickers, same paper, same ribbon, same tags. How about you? Are you a fan of kits? Or do you prefer to mix and match from random things?

I like a little of both. I like the kits, because they come with idea books with all of the supplies you already have. I like loose elements because I can either be creative or make pages based on other idea books I see. I love scrapbooking!

I have a kit, but I don't use it all together. I got it as a gift. I buy random pieces here and there. I prefer to mix and match. I am just starting and have only 5 or 6 pages made so far. It is really fun though! My sister got me started last year but with the baby I haven't had a whole lot of time.

personally i love kits, as everything matches so half the job is done for me already. but i do have a habbit of buying individual pieces as they are cheaper, and with me bring a student i dont have lots of money to spend on such things. altho crafting is one of my favourite hobbies

that's interesting. I sometimes thought kits were packaged as being 'cheaper' since the total cost of all the elements is less than the kit cost. but they are usually pricey to begin with, like $20 and more. whereas slowly buying separates can cost only $5 each time haha.

I guess for beginners, it is better to start off with those pre-packed kits. They will then be able to concentrate on laying out the page first. Then the will learn from the kit how the different patterns, stickers and material can come together to form a nice piece of art. Then as the beginner move to the next level, his skills improved, then experimenting with different material and layout will no longer become a chore.

I am not a fan of kits. I like to buy paper, embellishments, card stock, and come up with my own designs. I love the creativity of it. I can spend hours scrapbooking.

I have done both but for the most part I use random things. I have tons of cutters and since I invested the money I like to use them as much a possible. Sometimes the kits are too much the same and if you have more photos then just a couple of pages you want to match sometimes you have to stretch them too thin. I like doing my own thing too!

I like both. Sometimes there are kits that look really cool to me so I will order those, otherwise mostly I just get things by themselves. It's easier to do my own thing then.

I'm a big fan of kits - for a few reasons. One is that I don't spend a lot of time shopping for the latest scrapbooking supplies. When I get kits I see the latest and greatest papers without having to hunt them down. When I see a line I like, sometimes I get more. Second, I realized that I spent a LOT of time choosing the "perfect" papers and embellishments for my pages... at the expense of actually scrapping. I put these kits together for myself before I subbed to kit clubs. Now it arrives, I toss in the photos, and I'm ready to go. It actually stretches me, because now I use papers that have a theme that goes, but maybe not necessarily the color (I used to be 100% matchy-matchy with the photo colors).

I love loose elements when scrapbooking, and I think the kits are nice as gifts or for starters. I am just a beginner in scrapbooking but I think it's really fun to mix and match different stuff and see if it turns out right. That's the challenge for me!

I buy interesting elements as I find them. Kits always seem too perfect to me... I like to add unusual touches. I use things from hardware stores, dollar stores, garage sales... anywhere I can find different types of 'scrap'. And I have boxes of 'ephemera'... it is also classified as junk, but I can do a lot with it! Old cards, magazine pages, junk mail, aluminum cans, dryer sheets... the possibilities are endless!

i totally agree abt kits seeming too perfect and matchy-match sometimes! you're right that almost anything can be scrapped! happy scrapping.

I usually buy loose papers and embellishments. I find that more creative, and much more flexible. However, I have purchased a couple of kits that I plan to use for long term projects (the kind where I add a page only a few times a year). That way I don't have to worry too much about my overall style changing over time, and looking different throughout the book.

I am definately a mix and matcher. Kits give a great base - espcially if you are new to scrapbooking. When doing a theme scrapbook I try to pick from one color palette, usually derived from a multi-colored piece of paper or kit. Then I will check other papers and embellishments to match that paper/kit. Doesn't need to be the same brand. I will also challenge myself to do something different with the kit items and I never try to make myself use everything that comes in the kit.
