It has been way to long for me to remember the rules, and my little girl is just beside herself for tomorrows test.
The words:
family's and families'
laboratory's and laboratories'
girl's and girls'
How does she know what the difference is? Can you give me a sentence and re-educate me on the difference? WOW..what I we don't forget!
I am at a real loss here and need lots of help PRETTY PLEASE!!!!

Previous poster is correct. Also, for family and laboratory, they end in y's when speaking of one (family or laboratory) and indicating possession.
ex: The family's possessions
The laboratory's equipment
Change to ies' when speaking of the possessions of 2 or more families or laboratories.
ex: The apartment building burned, all of the families' possessions were destroyed.
The state cut funding, all of the laboratories' programs suffered.
Girl's refers to the possessions of one girl.
ex: The girl's spelling was correct
Girls' refers to the possessions of 2 or more girls.
ex: The girls' uniforms arrived.
Hope this helps.

THe apostrophe before the 's' means it belongs to a single thing/person. The apostrophe after the 's' means it belongs to multiple things/people. For example:
Being a princess is a girl's dream (It is a single girl's dream to be a princess)
Being princesses are girls' dreams (Talking specifically about all girls, not just one)
Good luck!! :-)

In order to figure it out you have to put the sentence....
The Family's car....meaning the family owns that car..
The families' cars means...more then one family has a car...
The girl's coat was red while the 10 girls' coats were blue..
I don't know if that helps you....
