I made this cake for the first time a few years ago. You don't have to be a brilliant baker... this one is made from a yellow cake mix, though of course if you are a brilliant baker you can make yours from scratch. Pour batter into two round 8" pans, bake according to directions and cool. Place one of the layers in the middle of a large platter (we used a pizza plate) Cut the other layer into 8 equal wedges and trim the edges so they fit flush against the center layer. If the second layer has puffed up too much in the middle you might want to slice the puffy parts off first. The frosting is simple butter frosting made with 1 box of confectioners sugar, 3/4 stick of softened butter, 1/2 tsp vanilla (you could also use lemon flavoring) and a few drops of yellow food coloring. We also added a lot of little birthday-sized candles but hadn't bought them yet when this photo was taken. A Happy Solstice and Joyouse Yule to all :-)

Happy Solstice to you and its great for you to share your cake idea. My daughter and I made our Yule Log cake last night much simpler one though lol we went and got the pre mix at Bulk Barn (just add water) and loaf pan. We are starting a tradition by leaving the shaping and the decorating of our Yule log after our meal. We are also going to place candles in and light them, not only to celebrate the time of light to come but also cause it is the closest thing I can do to have a "burning" Yule log seeing I dont have a fire place.
Brightest Blessings:)s

A Yule Log cake with embedded candles ... that's a great idea for those of us who don't have fireplaces... we don't either, dernit. But come tonight, we'll light the electric twinkle lights that we're going to string up today and also light candles, including one big one to represent the Yule Log. BB!

It is a very nice cake and it seems very easy to do. I am not much on baking so I won't say I am going to make one, but I might sometime in the future.
Happy Solstice and A Joyous Yule to you as well.

Now I don't really know because I haven't spoken to every Pagan in the world LOL and I'll bey there have been others who've thought to make an 8-spoked star cake for Solstice or one of the other turns of the Wheel but in my little corner of the world, it's my original design, tada ;-)
Sorry I didn't know how to include a pic when I started this discussion but you can see the picture in the link in the post above yours (I hate not being able to copy and paste arg!) or go to my profile page and there's a pic of me holding the cake in the photos sortie.
Happy Solstice!

I found the picture of the cake in your profile and it's lovely! It's such a good idea! It's like a sun or a star!
I'm going to use the idea in the future, I'm sure. My Pagan friends will love it too. Thank you for sharing!
Merry Solstice and Yule to you too!

Happy Winter Solstice and Cool Yule (Joyous) to you, too. 8 pointed star cake, cool. Why 8? Looks very nice, I like it.
I've heard of people making Jelly rolls that they decorate with frosting like logs. Very pretty, too. They even make the ends look like growth rings and really talented people make raccoon babies for fox babies. I would just be happy if my jelly roll turned out and the foxes worked. Up here we sometimes use real logs with candles and bows from Balsom or other trees. Take care and have fun.

I saw the most awesome jelly roll log with chocolate frosting in a magazine one time with baby raccoons or baby foxes (not sure which, memory poor) that someone had put into the frosting on one end of the log. Like their Mother had put them in there for safety. It was the coolest thing.

The 8 points represent Winter Solstice, Imbolc, Spring Equinox (Ostara), Beltaine, Summer Solstice (Midsummer), Lammas (Lughnasadh), Autumn Equinox (Mabon) and Samhain. I came up with the idea around Yule so I call it a Winter Solstice Cake. Also, it's looks kind of a sun with rays. But it works for any turn of the Wheel celebration IMO.
I've heard of Yule log/jelly roll cake... another good idea. What are raccoon babies/fox babies?

That's very interesting. I don't think that I have a plate large enough, but It'd be easy enough to make. Thanks for the recipe and idea :)

I just checked out the photo of your cake on your profile, and it looks good, quite different with the star shape. It sounds easy to make too, thanks for the instructions.
