Honk, Honk

I bought a new car a year ago. And have been driving it on a daily basis. The other day I was in the mall parking lot when a friend of mine was walking by and I went to honk my horn and had to look to see where it was!! Now people go by my house all the time and I can hear the honk. When I took drivers training many years ago they told you that your horn was just for emergency purposes! But I have broken that little rule many times and honk if I want someone's attention! Do you use your car horn just for emergencies or do you use it to attract someone's attention or a greeting?

I have used it to get someone's attention. My hubby freaked the first time I did it. He said that it is not a practice that is done in the Netherlands. I told him that he is now in America and to get use to it!

Well, my apartment complex is quite large, and even in winter someone is always hanging out up front. So I wouldn't honk like at a neighbor I see walking a dog because it would get everyone else's attention. I know because other people don't have the same courtesy as I do, lol! Other times I have wanted to honk at my parents as I drive up to their house, but again, people are always out and their neighborhood is really quiet. So I'm like you, sometimes I have to look to see where I'm supposed to push to get the horn!

Make sure you use it for a really great reason - like seeing a really fine man stroll by. : )

i'm not driving but my hubby does... he doesn't really like to use a horn and he only uses it for emergency most of the times... there are couple of times when he uses it to attract someone's attention or to give a signal... it is not really polite to use a horn here...

I think it's okay if you don't do it all the time! LOL

I honk for attention - like when I pull up at my house and need the boys to come help carry groceries in.

I think if I had someone to carry groceries I would honk too for them to come out and help!

I generally save my horn for emergencies (and I have to look for it when I need it) but I've been known to tap it lightly to get someone's attention. Around here in our small town, people generally just wave when they pass each other on the road or pass a neighbor out in the yard, even if they don't know the person. We're pretty friendly here in Arkansas and, I guess, quiet as well without a lot of car horns blaring.

I live on a pretty busy street and there are times I could live without hearing them....but you know sometimes they sound friendly! LOL

Actually I have used my car horn as a greeting it was a frequent practice when I was growing up as a way to greet neighbors and friends. I really do not see anything wrong with it as long as it is done in a responsible manner. You may not want to do it too late at night in a residential neighborhood. he he

I think you are right! LOL....a quiet neighborhood wouldn't have a sense of humor about it!

I also bought a car a year ago and think I used it once when someone was about to pull out in front of me. I've never been much of a horn honker. Was taught also not to use it unless it was an emergency.

I'm guilty of doing this. I had driven home and when I got there I honked my car's horn to let my husband know I was home. I normally beep him with my cell phone's direct connect to let him know when I get home, but for some reason or another I used the car's horn. Well, I didn't know he was already outside just around the corner of the house a few feet away. I scared him pretty good! Poor guy was freaked! I haven't done this since as my car's horn is rather loud and obnoxious.

in stead of using my car horn i just use my car lights to draw someones attention, it's a more quiet alternative for using the car horn
