Become a copy editor? Or is this silly?

After much deliberation and a bit of inspiration I think I would really enjoy being a copy editor. I could do something like that from home very easily. What completely baffles me is that I have been qualified to do this for over 6 years now and never once did it ever occur to me to look into it! Is there anyone who does this? Is there a place I could apply to? If I did it freelance, is this even a service people would need or appreciate? Wow...a revelation tonight...:)

Hi, i'm a sub-editor/copy-editor for one of the independent newspapers' publications in SA. it was my first journalism job and i enjoy doing it so much. its like you are a word engineer, you fix it all up and its a good feeling to see the headline that you came up with on a big poster on your way to work. i love copy-editing, i dont know anyone who's a sub-editor who does not enjoy it. well, first of all you must be a perfectionist, there's no room for mistakes. even a coma that's on the wrong place can make you the sub-editor look so bad, really really bad. i think i'm a good sub-editor now because these days, whatever i read, mistakes just jump at my eyes, i can smell a dirty copy from miles away. but i'm more of a TV person, i love broadcasting, i'd love to edit tv scrips, create and produce tv material. i'm very creative and i'm ready to move into bigger and exciting things. i think i'm gonna keep on editing privatelly, as soon as i get my lap-top, i'm opening a little editing company, where'll i'll edit governement correspondences and copy of anyone who will need my services. i'm all for making money and i'm not scared of hard work. so dear, try it, i'm sure you'll love it. How much would you charge per page if you were to edit other people's stuff?

i am not sure what i would charge...the best formula is how much you want to make per hour, how long it takes to do certain projects, etc. It sounds like you really enjoy your job, i am so happy for you! It is funny, too...when we post on sites like this we really don't pay any attention to grammar or spelling...just trying to type as fast as we can...i hope there are not too many "coma's" in anyone's writing, lol :) thx again for your response!

I worked for years as a copy editor, but never from home. I always worked in a corporate environment. I do think you need training. I was in a certificate program for publishing (I already had my BA and this was an additional criteria for the job) at George Washington University, but there are programs all over the country. A lot of folks think that they can be editors without any background because they write well. It takes a good working knowledge of an editing style, like AP or Chicago. Good luck with pursuing this line of work. I hope that you get some responses from freelancers; I'd love to hear what they have to say about working from home.

Thank you so much for the insight! My background is probably not enough for a corporate environment. I was told by my advisor at school my degree is "not worth the piece of paper it is printed on", but I did take several proofing and copy editing classes while there. (This is why I can't believe it actually took me this long to think of this!) I do agree - there probably are a lot of people who would *think* they are good at it (and maybe yes, even me!) I am looking forward to more responses too! Thanks Again!

I am not trying to be judgmental about your skill set. However, there is a real difference between writing and editing. Writers are the creative geniuses and copy editors are like the accountants of words (picking out all the tiny details and worrying aout them). It just takes two different sorts of temperaments to deal with each. After years of fixing up other people's writing, I have tried some writing myself, and it is so hard for me because I am more of an editor. I admire people with an open, expansive creative spirit who can write! Good luck whatever you decide to do!

yes, i am not really much of a creative writer myself...but i do read a lot of articles and think about what would make them a heck of a lot easier to read! don't worry, i don't think you were being judgemental - you have professional experience and i am glad you shared it with me!!

I've done some copy writing for my brothers company before that went quite well they were designing websites so I wrote some of the website content for them. Have you heard of Ciao? It's a fantastic site doesn't pay that much, but you get paid for writing reviews and it is loads of fun maybe you could start there and show future employers your work there? I will return to this discussion with a link for you in case you are interested in Ciao.

Nothing silly about it in my view. I have done that sort of work on a free-lance basis before as a "moon-light" kind of thing while working full-time elsewhere, and although it was a bit more work than expected, it was for the most part enjoyable work and paid better than some kinds of "seasonal" work. I've no idea where to apply as my leads were invitation-only and those kept me busy enough. The only drawback was that sometimes there would be a few too many assignments and I wouldn't want to say no because they were good clients whom I liked to keep happy. So it did get a bit overwhelming at times.

yes, it seems when it rains it pours usually :) I go through this when I do work now - it is somewhat seasonal, since it is based on the real estate market where I live - and December, January, and February are not the busiest of times traditionally. I will have to research some more and hope for more responses :) thank you again as always!

This sounds really interesting but what does a copy editor actually do and I am sorry if I don't know but I love to learn about new things that people are able to do from home. It is great to be able to branch out into freelance and what kind of skills does it really require.

i have yet to find a work at home opportunity for it...(though my wheels may be turning to start one! - still need much more research!) but i think it would be easy to do from home - someone would write an article or book or whatever and then send it to you to proofread. You make any spelling/grammar corrections & send it back to them to do whatever they want to do with it - send to publishers or for their site, etc. A lot of people rely on their spell check and grammer check, but it doesn't always catch everything... bsaically you would need to be good with your primary language, be able to stare a screen for a long time, and have a good attention for detail i would think. will let you know if i figure anything else out...thx for your response!

It is not silly, people break into the copy editor game all the time. Breaking into working at home is much harder.

yes, i think the working at home would be harder. but i think it would be possible to find opportunities out there. i did our high school and college newspaper editing all the time...they also in addition to the students hired someone to do the layout and edit the text to fit...i would LOVE that job now...(I wanted it then, but they weren't allowed to hire students) i am so glad for all the responses...i hope to learn more about it soon to see if it is something i can do or not...i always have a few things cooking on my stove :)
