Why Do You Take the Newspaper?

I subscribed to our local newspaper for years until recently. Toward the end, however, I had cut it down to the Sunday and Thursday editions. What prompted this discussion is a show I am watching on PBS about people who live to do crossword puzzles. This leads to why I stopped taking the newspaper. I finally decided that the main reason I wanted the paper was in order to work the crossword puzzles. I especially like the Sunday puzzle because it is so much meatier. I have found a couple of sites on the internet where I can do these puzzles anytime I wish. All in all, I decided that paying for the newspaper just to get the puzzle was pretty weak. If you still get the paper delivered, why do you?

Well I don't take it LOL
I used to quite a few years back but honestly after a while didn't see any reason to continue and stopped it.
I do love crossword puzzles but I don't like the ones in the newspapers here. THey are always about silly things like actors names or tv shows.
WHen I crave for crosswords I usually buy a crossword magazine, I get more from my money and enjoy it much more.

I have a favorite puzzle magazine publisher where I used to keep a subscription, arkaf. They simply have the best puzzles. I can now access them online.

I can appreciate that, blanksolid, since the newspaper is filled with news from all over.

My husband is retired and spends a lot of time reading the newspaper from front to back. My son also enjoys the paper because he reads the sports pages, completely. I only use the newspaper to view the tv schedule and to see the listings at our local movie theaters. I also enjoy reading reviews of movies, books and music.

I guess some people will never give up on the daily newspaper, ozzie. Who knows, I might even go back to it one day!

Even in this world of instant information I like to read the news daily from the newspaper. I read it daily. And try my hand at puzzles only on sundays. I like to read the newspaper very early in the morning.

I do miss the leisurely reading of my newspaper over a couple of cups of coffee in the mornings, ajinkya.

There always seems to be a problem when you live in apartments, Aurone. For awhile I was being bothered with neighbors stealing my Sunday paper.

The newspaper does contain a lot of information that might be useful for business, Carolxu.

We do have the paper delivered 7 days a week. I am not real fond of trying to read the paper since the print is so small. My husband loves the sports section so he reads it every morning with coffee. He would have a hissy fit if we stopped the delivery. Occasionally I do read the obits but not on a very regular basis. Can find our newspaper online if there is something I want to read.

I guess it's partly out of habit since I've been reading our local newspaper every day for as long as I can remember. I also like the puzzles, the Jumble, cryptogram and Sudoku as well as the crossword, and our paper has a column called "30 Seconds" where people either call in or e-mail comments on just about anything; these comments just make my day because while some are actually pretty good and thought-provoking many of them are total nonsense but really hilarious! As an example, our local fair was held back at the end of September but they just stopped a few weeks ago complaining about fat people in motorized wheelchairs eating fattening foods. Get a life! But, since I not only read the stuff but bother to comment on it here, maybe I need to get a life...lol!
One more rather morbid reason I get the paper is for the obituaries. I guess one can tell they're getting older when they start recognizing far too many people listed there.

I kind of understand your wanting to hold onto your newspaper, anniepa, but, once again, even those things can be accessed via the internet nowadays. Even the obits!

I subscribe to the paper because I read it on the lightrail on the way to college. And because of the TV schedule and coupons in Sundays paper. I also work the crosswords (poorly) and do the sudoko (that I can actually finish).
The only time, I quit getting the paper was the last year that I was living in my last apartment. Someone was stealing it in the morning, long before I would get up. I am not sure who was taking it, but I got tired of having to pay for my paper out of the box while I was paying for it as a subscriber. So I just started to get the Sunday paper out of the street box.
For me, the internet is not a good alternative to the paper. I will leaf though the paper while I am waiting for the computer to do something (I have a slow computer), or on the lightrail. I don't have a laptop computer, nor do I want to get one (I am easily distracted). Sometimes it is worth paying a little more, so that I get more done in a day.

I had the same experience with someone stealing my paper before I got out of bed, morgandrake. I think that is what led me to stop my last subscription.
