I have an online friend who is addicted to this game and suggested I download the trial version a few days ago. Although I'm still pretty lost with it all I must admit I'm spending an awful lot of time on it so I think it could well turn into my new obsession. It's likely I will join after the trial expires anyway.
So who plays it? Are you good at it? Any tips welcome because I'm rubbish, I spend most of my time looking for my corpse! I asked my friend for tips but most of it went over my head (he's pretty geeky!). Just to widen the scope of the discussion does anyone play any other multiplayer role playing games online? If so tell me about them - I might be interested in them too!

Things a beginner should know:
In the starting area, talk to people with yellow "!" on them. Those are quests.
You do quests to get experience, rewards, and reputation with a faction (but most important is the experience and rewards).
Quests have you killing mobs(monsters/people) by number
Quests have you killing mobs for things they have on them (they'll say "Quest item")
Quests have you gather items found in the environment
(they'll sparkle out in the open, and when you mouse over them, you'll see a note and you can interact with the item)
*********************************************************************************
In terms of enemies, they come in levels and level brackets (they are by color so its simpler to know and remember)
Yellow numbers = they are at or near your level, you can and should fight them
Green numbers = they are a little below your level, easier to fight
Orange numbers = they are a bit abover your level, you shouldn't fight them
Red numbers = they are beyond your level, you REALLY shouldn't fight them
?? and red numbers = they are 10 or more levels above you, you WILL be killed
Gray numbers = they are too below your level, you'll get no EXP for them
In terms of enemy conduct and other computer characters in game
Friendly characters and players will have a green life bar
Neutral characters and enemies will have a yellow life bar
- They will not attack you, unless you attack them first
Hating characters and real enemies will have a red life bar
- They will attack you if you get too close to them
- The lower in level you are to them, the more you'll get attacked
- The higher in level you are to them, the less likely you'll get attacked
Might be confusing, but I think you're learning it from what I've read in your post :D
***************************************************************************
In terms of beginning the game
- Start in your area and talk to the first ! people you see.
- Do their quests (they'll usually be ones where you kill a type of animal, enemy or monster)
- Be sure to not leave the starting area until you are level 6
- When you do all of the quests in the starting area, or reach level 6, check the questgivers (!). One may have a quest to send you to the next area.
Levels 6-10
- Go to the next town as described by questgivers
- Make sure to talk to the ! people in that town.
- Also talk to the innkeeper and set your hearth to that town for now
(You should do this Stiletto. On one of my characters I hearthed a level 20 back to the area)
- Keep an eye on the monsters here too, you'll see a lot more kill on sight (red life bar) enemies.
*******************************************************************
I'll have to come back to this, my time is short.

I am a W.O.W. ( World of Warcraft) addict, it does take a while to get use to playin this game, especially if you are new to PC games. I have to admit i am pretty geeky myself, and am afraid i would probly be talkin over you head as well. My suggestion is to make different classes untill you find one that suits you. Good luck!

It takes a while to get the hang of, but there are a ton of interesting things you can do to vary your characters once you get the hang of it! That's why I enjoy it, because I can log onto a different character and all my strategies have to change. Gives it a lot of long-term play value.
I've been playing it for quite a while now. Am I good at it? Well, I wouldn't say that. I have this problem with visual acuity that sometimes makes it hard for me to play because I can't tell which direction things are coming from. But I enjoy playing a lot anyway! :)
One thing my husband always reminds me is not to get caught up in questing for its own sake. I've spent hours doing quests that weren't worth much, after I really could have already been in a new zone or doing other things because I was too high level for that area.
The other major thing I've learned over my time of playing is to never sell something to the shop you could sell at the auction house. Even if low-level magic items sell for just a few silver at the shop, players will buy them for more just to disenchant them for materials. So you're wasting a lot of gold in the long run just selling things to the shop.
And gold matters. Especially once you get up to higher levels, having good equipment is a big deal! ;p

I'm just a bit lost with it all at the moment but I can see how it could be addictive! I've read the manual but I have problems retaining the information when I am actually playing the game so it's sort of trial and error for me lol! Anyway that's really useful info - thanks lecanis :)

It is overwhelming at first! Another thing to think about is that you can always start another character later if you decide you don't like how things are going with one, and if you make them on the same server you can send them your old character's money and stuff. So treat the first character like an experiment and don't worry if things wind up not quite what you'd like! You don't HAVE to play that character all the way to level 70 if you're bored with it or not happy with that class, race, professions, whatever.

I already sent a note of where I'm at in Warcraft to Lecanis. Somehow we've got to get together in game if we can :D
I'll answer your questions Stiletto in my other response. For now I'll say that its good to just experiment with your character and see how the game works that way. I'll post some quick notes for things a novice needs to know.

My name is Tee, and I am a WoWaholic.
"Hi Tee."
I started playing WoW on the weekends. All the kids were doing it. We'd go over to Johnnys basement and hed log in and show us his uber gears... it was such a good feeling. Before I knew it I had my own subscription.
I kept it a secret from my family... they would never understand. By day I was a normal everyday boy. But in WoW.... I was a mighty Warlock, able to summon demons from the twisting nether to do my dark and heroic biddings.
...........
Seriously though, its a really really fun game, and I have only been playing about a year and I am still learning something new almost every day.
Dont be embarassed about what you dont know... everyone has to start somewhere.
Send me a message and tell me what server you are on, I have been meaning to make a new character anyways. Lvl 70 can get boring sometimes.
Have you seen the WoW commercials yet? William Shatner?
Hilarious!

LOL Hi Tee! I loved the first part of that!
I used to tease my friend for getting so into it all but I must admit I'm really enjoying it and theprogamers response above has helped enormously in making it all a bit clearer for me, because I was finding it pretty confusing! Umm, what server am I on ... I'll check and let you know! I haven't seen the WoW commercials but William Shatner is pretty funny no matter what he's doing!
