DVD Special Features

Do you ever bother watching the extras or special features on DVDs?
I often don't see the point in them. I suppose you really have to be a die hard fan to be interested. If it's a choice between a 1 disc edition or a 2 disc edition for a bit more, I'd save the cash! The interesting documentaries I might watch once, but the only thing I'm really interested in is the gag reels! We just watched one for Snakes On a Plane. Not as funny as the movie, but still quite amusing.

Those extra features are more for behind-the-scenes kind of viewers, but they can be interesting to watch, too, though they take away the magic of the movie, because they make things "less believable" or convincing, if you know what I mean.

I know exactly what you mean. I hadn't thought about it like that before but I think that's true in some cases.
I suppose I often don't have the patience for that kind of thing either unless I really, love the film. Even then I don't think I'd want to watch it with someone talking over the top of it!

If the movie's really good, It wouldn't be bad to be immersed in it. This can be achieved in a nice, cozy personal theater that plays DVDs. Otherwise, a little audience reaction is also good and is really also part of the movie experience, in a big theater, or one where you can have friends as guests. For a truly realistic experience, you can get one of those virtual reality goggles that you wear like eyeglasses. The movie is "fed" directly into your eyes which makes you and the movie be as one. Add 3D technology to this and you'd really feel like you're in the movie! I have a movie entertainment Blogger blog called "Hots Up."

What kind of features do you enjoy? I'm still only sold by the gag reels so far!

I love dancing! What DVDs do you mean that have that kind of thing specifically?

I like the gag reels too, and the deleted scences, I also like the extra videos they have on movies based on dancing because some of them show you some moves. And I like the behind the scenes too.

Most blockbusters are made of thinking on the DVD so no big surprises on that side, most of it is promotional material that you can watch on E! channel or the web.
Gag reel and deleted scenes are the main attractions thou not all movies present them.
Medium to small movies are the big winners in this category, like Napoleon Dynamite that has plenty of material to show and the commentaries are worth.

I have not seen "Napoleon Dynamite" but I have heard good things about it. It sounds like a really strange film. I will have to see about renting it soon to see what all the fuss is about! :)

I am not so concerned with the extras on DVDs as I am additional languages. I am trying to maintain the little French that I have. And the wife is studying Spanish. So it is nice to have DVDs that we can watch in those languages. The translations are not exact, but it is better than nothing; I get so bored with language course CDs.

That's a good idea. I'd forgotten that I know someone who watches DVDs in Greek for just that reason. I should probably brush up on my school French because I've forgotten almost all of it! At least that way it holds your interest more than basic language skill lessons.

if i am intrested in the movie then yes i will check out the special features and we usually will watch the actual movie and sometimes will watch the directors cut. where the director goes through the entire movie and tell the audience what and how they made certain scenes. over the years we sure have learned alot about the outtakes that they have done. snakes on a plane wasnt too bad of a moive. alot of the movies that jackson does are pretty good and hes a good actor. an interesting fact that we learned from fast and furious tokyo drift is that when they go for a race through china (where they went speeding by the cop. with what they were clocked in doing on the radar the cop would never do anything as they have no chance of catching the person.

I can't stand seeing a film with someone talking over it! I'd prefer to see a documentary with them talking about the film separately. You only really watch those features once though don't you?
That's really interesting about the cops and speeding. You can learn some interesting little things from the extras I suppose!

Yes usually only once as it gets imbedded into the brain. Some parts we will skip through but the parts that intrigue us we will watch.

Yea.. only when I have nothing to do...
Then again if the movie is really good i might watch the deleted scenes or the alternate endings..

Are the alternate endings ever any good? Whenever I've sat down to watch them, they've tended to be the same ending but with a different camera angle or something. I've always been disappointed and so I don't bother with them anymore.

I have "28 Days Later" on DVD actually. I'll have to check it out later. I just never bothered with it before because I figured it would be like all the other "alternate endings" I've seen before which are just different camera angles! Thanks for the tip!

There is a couple of alternate ending that are darker and less closed ending the theatrical release, usually cut for commercial purposes, 28 Days later is one that comes to my head.

I don't think you need to be a die hard fan of a movie to watch the extra features. I think you just have to have a curiosity about what ever the extras are. I love when they show outtakes of any movie. There are some movies that I like to see how they make some of the monsters or sets. When I buy a dvd I always buy the special edition. Sometimes special edition is just a few extras and others add extra time to the movie it self. There are some people who just love the movie but do not want to watch the extra stuff. My daughter very seldom watches the outtakes or anything else related to the movie once it is over.

I don't always do it. I really have to like the movie a lot. For example, when i got the extended versions of the Lord Of The Rings' trilogy, i checked out most of the extra stuff, even though it lasts hours. But i wouldn't do it with a normal movie, that's true. I think that many of the things they add there are irrelevant and don't really add much to the movie.

There's so much stuff on the Lord of the Rings DVDs. My partner and I have all the extended versions and although I like the film, I just can't sit through all of that! He's quite interested in it though - I can't understand it myself!

One of my favorite features of DVD is the The Directors Cut. It is the another side of the movie that are not included in the movie. Maybe some, part are censored or banned. Or this is the part that have some comment of other people about the movie.

Director's Cuts are good because you can see the film the way that the director intended it to be shown, like the excellent editions of the Alien films you can buy now. There was one exception of this with Bladerunner though, or so I've been told. Apparently the last "Director's Cut" was actually not Ridley Scott's idea. He was overrun by producers or something. I heard another actual director's cut is out now though or soon at least and it will be Scott's vision of how it should have been.
The commentary's I don't like because if I'm watching the film I want to see it without people talking over the top of it!

Yeah.... no. I don't watch any of the specials on DVDs. I mean why? I don't want to watch as the director goes through and tells you their thoghts on the movie or this angle or that part. I don't care how much makeup the actors needed or what their muse was for their character. I just want to watch the movie.

That's pretty much exactly what I think! The technical stuff is always really, really dull to me too! I suppose it must appeal to someone though or why would they bother to put all that stuff on it?
