Okay, my daughter is a text message addict! I knew she did alot but Saturday she was at me house, did some and then said "I just texted my 6,000 msg for this month" (her billing month, which is the 15th to the 15th). I was floored! 6,000!!?!? How does she have time to do that working full time, a single mom, the holidays and just life in general?!?! and how does she have that much to say!?!?! others have that much to say back!?!?! She said that was incoming and outgoing, but still. 3,000 msgs she herself texted! That's 100 a day - give or take!! Could be more coming in, than she does going out, but when she is with me she is nearly constantly either sending or answering!!!!!! I like to chat, but no way could I post 3,000 posts here on MyLot!!! Good grief - what is this world coming to!!!!!!!!!(LOL!)!)!

well its not hard... one of my 14 year old daughters and her bf... well they did 12,000 in december... and 8,000 in December.... but that isn't just the two of them.... it is her texting everyone... all 5 of us have texting and use it... so much easier... to say... hey come here... when I pull up to the drive way to pick them up at school... instead of sitting there waiting... or parking and getting out and going to find them... ect...

Me and my hubby have done that together in a month, but not alone lol. That is a lot of texts. I have my facebook set up so that i get msg's from thre to my phone, as well as my msn and a few other chats. But i dont text that many texts in one month or get that many lol. I hope she has an unlimted package. I sure do. And so does hubby. Maybe she texts while she's at work as well as in her leisure time! As for that many mylot posts in a month, well we usually type a lot more in a mylot response/discussion then any text msg, you can only type like 160 characters on most cell phones ;)

Yes, she did tell me she had the unlimited text msg plan .... as I was pulling myself up off the floor when she told me about the 6,000! She has it down tho, all abbreviations and "cell phone shorthand". Not only do you have to get this tap, tap , tap thing down, but you have to learn a new language!!!!

So she says using 'abr"!!! To funny! See, you are learning it and dont' even know it! I have found I have learned alot of the abbreviations (okay, abr's!) from her and tend to use them, but my reason is cause i have the keypad type phone, not the keyboard style. one tap of the first letter, two taps for the second letter, three taps for the thrid letter - I drive my self crazy keeping track of what I typed as for what I am saying! I have even forgot what I was trying to say cause I was so busy keeping track of the taps for which letter! I started picking up the abr's out of shear necessity to combate insanity!!!

LOL Yep, I recognize that. The exact same thing happens with my daughter. I have no idea how they can text that many messages specially because that thing is so uncomfortable to type ! But they do. No wonder the cell phone is so important for them. I've caught my daughter on our home phone talking to a friend, text messaging another one all the while she was on msn with some other friend.. that's really multitasking. But of course in my opinion it would certainly work much better if they all got together and talked in person LOL I guess I'm just old fashioned:)

That would be nice, but apparently it's a very special kind of multitasking skill LOL only works for that kind of stuff:)

Good that you make her contribute! She is learning money don't grow on trees! My daughter is 29. She pays her own bills and I am proud of how well she has done. I think she wastes money alot (like this cell phone! her bill last month was $400! - I didn't ask why, I was busy pulling myself up off the floor!)but veryone sees things differently. She is being repsonsible and pays her bills, and things like that so moneywise I can't complain (although I think she should alocatte her money differently but that's my opinion!). I just think, somanya things she could be doing with all that time that could make a difference, then I think - well, to me that is a waste of time, but to her it is enjoyment. She did up her plan to get unlimited free messages, didn't ask what that costs!

oneandone - after she told me that nad I fell on the floor, she did say her plan has unlimited texting, so at least I was able to recoop! I was under the impression it was 10 cents per msg, as she put me on her plan and told me that I have 100 in and 100 out msg for free. I thought that was what she had too! But it could have changed as that as a while ago. She is the only one I text (she doesn't call and talk to me, just text!) and sometimes my son, other than that i don't text.

how in the world does one end up with a $400 cell phone bill if they have unlimited?

Yeah, and in mylot you would get paid for it as she is spending money to send them. Why not get her to join mylot? I know my step daughter is the same way. She comes over and we play cards and she spends so much time text messaging. She is so fast with it, it just blows my mind. She holds her cell phone in her left and and uses her thumb and can probablt type 100 words a minute. I would love to get her to join mylot but she is not interested because this isn't where her friends are and she wouldn't get access to her friends instantly like she does with her cell phone.

I thought about it, but ususally she is on the go when she texts the most. And she can text from work, but can't access PC there.

Instead of holding actual conversations on the phone that'll last 10 seconds, teens drag it out into a 3 hour text message conversation. I hate text messages. It's a waste of my time. If you need me that bad, call me. I don't have time to stop what I'm doing and type back a response when I can just as easily pick up the phone, tell you the answer and hang up in under a minute.

Yeah, call and be done with it and move on in life! Ever thought how long - as in how many minutes - it takes to text a full conversation? But what I think many do is just do bits and pieces of a conversation, lot of single word responses, and they just dont get the art of conversation anymore! IF all I get are single word or single syllable answers, how important can the question be?!?!?

People communicate more oveer cell phones than they do over MSN these days. I'm the same way, I text way more than anything else when I want to talk to my friends.I prefer it over being on the computer and talking to them, because then I can do other things like make myself dinner or watch a movie and still figure out what I wanna do for the night without having to make my friends hold. Which is kind of nice. I do have to laugh though, 6000 messages in one month? I don't even think I can do that and I pretty much live on my phone.

I'd still rather speak to someone and have them speak to me - ear phones were the best invention, in my book! There is just more to say than a text msg can accomodate. Great if you just want want short answers or just yes/no, but sometimes there needs to be more said and this back and forth gets annoying to me - I forget what they said, what I said, who am I talking to again? If I get texted, I usually answer soon, but what if I can't and hours later I text and they forgot they asked, or cause I didn't answer sooner, they did something else and visa versa? Oh well, they say progress is progress, guess those back pre-telephone days thought the same thing when the talking box came out!

WOW! That's a huge number of texts. My daughter isn't at the age where she's doing that yet but I can see it coming the way she is with her IM'ing on the computer. It reminds me of that Dr. Phil episode he had on last week where that one woman spoke like 250,000 words per day. They said the average person speaks around 14,000 words per day. I have no idea how someone can have that much to say.

We'd better watch what we say here on MyloT - I'd be under the impressio that typing a conversation is the samae as speaking a conversation, so while we here "type" our words, can you imagen how much we "type" instead of speaking!!?!?! I'd be willing to bet I'm nearly 250,000, all words/text/type included! Do you think you would be? !

Wow that's a lot of messages.I've never heard of someone text messaging that much. Though i have a colleague who calls a lot and in december he had to pay 400 euro's for a phone bill.SO that's a lot.

It would depend on the length of the messages. If she sends a friend "R U BC?" and friend replies "15" and she says "Call me in 20" that is 3 messages. I'd hate to see here phone bill, though unless she is on an unlimited plan.

6000 is way over the limit. For me SMS is virually free and I've done a little over 5000 text messages in a year!

Wow! She texts a lot! How could she find time to do all those text messages in such a short time. It would be a waste of money if all text messages are not that important.

HOnestly, I think she was a bit thrown when she made that realization - at least her face expression was a bit odd. Last year for christmas I got her a $50 gift card to Starbucks. I asked her, just idol chit chat kind of way, how many days that would last her? She did some calculations and I saw her face literally drop! I said, "good grief, I didn't mean to upset you!" She says, "no, I just did the math - that will only last me 29 days! That means I have been spending about $60 a month at starbucks every month!!!" SO her daily expenses finally caught up with her nad she stopped her starbucks addiction! That was what it was like when she looked at me with that realization of how much time she does spend texting!! But then again, she has this text message shorthand thing down, she can write a paragraph in about 12 shorthand "words"!

that is a WHOLE lot of messages! I'm amazed that it is even possible! Yup if you could post 3000 posts on mylot you'd be rich. I suppose her texting might be very short messages or she is talking to a really good friend and the messages just go back and forth. it's really quite astounding. i know teenagers text a lot but this is the highest I've heard of for an adult!

I don't know, I don't particularly ask! Probably would scare me to know! She's a good kid tho, so I am not worried. I just have a huge problem in cutting the apron strings! I haven't been able to do it in 29 years, I hope I can at least loosen them in the next 29!

Wow - that's truely a lot of texting! I do txt, but it's a fraction of that. I have a friend that has to watch hers so she does't go over her 3000 per month. I know that some of the messages might be a reply like "k" or "y" so some of the messages might not be very long, but still count as a txt.

Yeah, no matter what you type you get the same "charge". And she does often with me the K or Yea. TO me - a waste! At least say something else to "get your moneys worth"!
