I admit, I returned something to get it cheaper

I was so upset when I went to a store recently and saw 2 items I bought my kids for Christmas on sale for 1/2 of what I paid! Obviously, they overbought but wouldn't adjust my receipt. So I bought another of the 2 items and returned them with my original receipt. Is this really wrong? They still got the sale and I even bought one more of the items to give as a present to someone else. I got $50 back and that is a lot of money and 1/3 of my kid's christmas. This way I can get them something else they wanted that we couldn't afford.

I would have done the same thing! I can't believe that they wouldn't do a price adjustment. I still have things I need to take back from the holidays, I better get moving on that.

I guess different stores have different policies. This one to me was known for having good customer service I thought and I had heard they would do adjustments and take things you don't have receipts for. I returned another thing I didn't have a receipt for and they were able to look at my history from my debit card and see I had bought it there and took it back and credited me.

Most stores will give you the sale price on your purchase if it goes on sale withing a certain abount of time from when you bought it, usually 30 days, unless, of course, the item is seasonal. If the items you purchased weren't seasonal, then I think that you are technically okay in the ethics department.
After all, if you had reboxed and returned the original items and then turned around and bought the on-sale items, you would have been completely in compliance with the store's policy, right? So, the fact that you returned the newly bought item rather than the used item actually was doing the store a favor, because they will more easily be able to sell the less worn item, right?

I did actually spend over the amount of money I got back at the store while I was there. So they got there money because if I hadn't gone back to return it, I probably would have bought the other items somewhere else. Maybe I'm rationalizing but it is hard to see something 50% less than what you paid for it a month ago and they have a bunch of them sitting there.

I cant believe the store would not match the price. Was it a long time agon or something? I have returned items to get them cheaper but I have never had to buy new ones and return old ones. I dont understand how it would all work. It seems like you would have still payed for the first 2 then returned the cheaper ones.

It wasn't a long time ago and I thought it was silly to have to purchase 2 more and return them too. I couldn't return the originals because my kids had opened them.

The store probably has a policy against it, but I can certainly understand why you did it. The store should value you as a customer & should adjust from your receipt- unless it's a holiday specific item. I'd feel differently if you said that you returned Christmas lights that went on clearance after Christmas, kwim?

I don't see anyhting wrong with this. Stores know this happens all the time. They frown upon the practice, but will do little to stop it. It's just of of the things that can happen to them when they run sales. (It is why many soters only allow returns within 60 or 90 days, even if the item is unopened)
If you go into, say a Walmart, without the receipt and you know you spent $50 on the item before Xmas, but the item is now $30, you're only getting the $30 back and the store makes $20 because you didn't have your receipt any longer.
What you did is no different and they know it happens, but not many people will take the time to do what you did...Good for you!!!
And since you bought more items at the store, you gave them some sales that they wouldn't have had from you w/o the return, so it was win/win for both parties!!!
