Achieving success is a matter of seizing opportunities.
Luck gives you the opportunity itself, hard work helps to actually seize those opportunities!
Among those who have achieved success, most have both; some have made it out of only luck, but NONE have made it out of only work.

Luck is the key factor for starting premises.
Of course depending on luck on the long term is impossible, but a single lucky strike in the very beginning is indispensable!
Try to imagine being born in the poorest sub-saharian africa country. Those people consider themseves lucky just for surviving to the age of 4. The only hard work you can do there is to keep you alive, there is NO chance of achieving anything that could be defined as "success".
Compare the situation to the one of a rich son of an international european or north-american manager. Sure, he has a lot of hard work to do in order to achieve success, but he has the OPPORTUNITY of doing so.
That's where luck matters!

Yea, you have a good point there. Its a huge difference in the two scenarios you wrote, just because they were born on different places. Still just being born in a wealthy country means nothing if you can't work hard to achieve something, yea you have a much better foundation to achieve something but i don't believe stuff just happens by itself.

if you just do hard work....its true that you'll have to depend on luck for achieving success....
if you do hard work but smartly...then there will not be much need for luck....this is especially true in case of business etc..

I think hardwork is important in obtaning success. But only a little of luck is needed and of course guidance from the Lord. Because it is only you can do more and achieve that goal of your life.

I believe they possibly go hand in hand but also working smart must be in there as well. The harder & smarter you work, the more luck you get...Thats only my opinion..

For me, hard work is more significant. Yes, luck is also important but it is very rare that you'll get some luck without doing anything. Usually you work hard for it then if you're lucky enough, things will go your way. If you don't work for it, you won't get lucky as well. If ever you will, its very rare. Being at the right place at right time doesn't mean luck all the time. Most of the time you planned for that day, you work for it, your past actions and hard work will reflect on what will you get in the present and in the future. Then if you're lucky enough then good for you. But you wont taste that luck (if you will, very rarely) if you just sit there and not do anything.

I've used both and have never acheived near as much as I put into it. I did however, learn that more than either of these options, the "right place at the right time" is a huge factor in whether you acheive or not. I'm not talking about acheiving on a test or things like that, but about making things happen for yourself. I bought several of those books about "make a million dollars in 30 days" and "make $1,000 a day" etc. I was out of work, disabled and not able to get help from the state. So I started looking for online work or any work I could do. I didn't fall for the title, but thought maybe there is something in there I could use to earn. Maybe a way I don't know about. Well, in reading many of them, I realized they all had one thing in common...a product that people needed and would pay for - whether they used it after the fact or not. Ergo...the right place at the right time. First and foremost, the person that wrote the book is now getting what he claims - a million a month - as everyone is buying his book.
He was at the right place - selling something people wanted,
At the right time - people needing to earn an income and online being the "soup of the day".
Turns out, I saw that in each of the examples used or told about, that person was at the right place at the right time...had something to sell and it was something people would buy. One was even just a million on paper - a woman needed to earn a million dollars in 30 days - drawn out story, but in the end, she only had it on paper - it wasn't paying her bills like you need to. But she made a million in 30 days - you can too! It also had a product to sell - do you have something to sell? What they don't tell you is that you ahve to have WHAT PEOPLE WANT TO BUY!! Donald Trump says "do what you love". He loved realestate so he did that. Okay, fine and dandy, but the other thing you have to have is people. YOu have to have people that do what you need help with. You ahve to have investors or someone that knows how to do something that you need, but dont know how to do. Again, something they don't tell you about.
Moral of the story? Do the best hard work you can with what you have, make sure you are in the right place at the right time and hope your luck covers the rest!

Sorry to be a fence sitter but I've always believed you need a fair dose of each. Whilst it's the hard work that sets your standard and helps you maintain a successful position in life, I believe things can often just boil down to being in the right place at the right time.
For example, if you move jobs then timing can make a huge difference as to what job you move on to, but it's your own hard work that would actually propel you to higher places.
Good question though!

Luck is the important factor over any "hard work".
For instance, if you happen to be born in the wrong part of the world, this is a really bad luck , and you probably will "hard work" for your whole (short) life just to stay alive.
Sure you can compliment luck with work, but if you don't have enough luck there is never a work hard enough to compensate that!

In my opinion, i think hard work and luck are two inseparable things. Everybody needs a hard work and later luck will follow. God is always watching, and he knows who really deserve to be lucky on a certain things.
