I've never thrown salt over my shoulder...I don't like messes :) I don't really believe in too many superstitions. My mom, though, would always say a quick blessing and the sign of the cross over her cakes and breads.

i think there is a base for all beliefs..some kind of folk lore that has stayed wih us through out the years..my wife is from the Philippines and she has many she has told me..if a young girl sings in a kitchen she will marry an old man..lol i told her it happened as i am seven years older then her... i too was told by my mother about the salt..i heard it is to get in the Devils eyes as he is watching you over your shoulder..silly?? gaa gaa? but some people believe so who is to say who is right or wrong? some people knock on wood or don't walk under a ladder...don't let a cat sleep with a newborn baby as it will steal its breath?..this one has a bases of truth..i guess it could happen as the baby breath smell like the milk they drink and the cat smells this? well its all a mystery

Usually we only do that when we knock over a slat shaker and some spills out. It's supposed to help keep evil spirits away.

My mom always told me if you spilled some salt you needed to throw some over your left shoulder to avoid having bad luck. I don't need any bad luck so I have always done it.

Thats what my mom told me also, and I always throw salt over my shoulder just in case. I don't need any bad luck either.
