For months my 17 year old daughter hasn't felt well. We would take her to the doctor to be told it was a cold, flu, urinary tract infection,on and on..She had bllod and urine test and her white count was low but she would test negitive for Barr Epstien,Mono, and anything else they would test for..
She was so tired and sick yesterday that I insisted they do another blood panal..Mono showed up ... I have some med training went to school for rn and transferred my last sesmester to psy...I'm an emt..etc but I don't know why it wouldn't show up for months then show up?
Doctor doesn't have an answer except sometimes it happens like that..that is why they do the test more then once..
Any ideas on this?

This kind of thing does happen because a very good friend of mine went thru the same thing. She was losing weight, felt tired all the time, and just felt bad. It took them months to find out what was wrong with her too. I guess it is more common than you'd think.

Today my niece finally got to go back to school, she was out of school since the end of October due to Mono. We aren't sure how long she had it either until we recognized the symptoms (and her mother is a LPN). She could have gone back sooner but due to Winter break she was out till today.
When they did the test in the doctors office it came back positive (they actually did this test twice, once the first time and another a month later) but after the second time they sent her to lab because if it the levels were low enough she could go back to school. According to the lab (which was drawn the same day as the office one) she had no trace of it in her system. Personally I found this very odd because Mono leaves traces, it never completely leaves so I think if it's below a certain level they say it's not there. Maybe that is the case with your daughter, it was there but not enough for the lab to say yes she has mono.

Well if your daughter was like most teens, staying up late, talking on phone, not eating right...she might have just been run down when she started feeling bad because she was just tired etc. Then as it continued, she actually did contract mono and it showed up on the blood tests.
The body is still a mystery to us...and this may remain just that.

I am really sorry to hear that your daughter has been so ill, love. I hope it is not too bad for her and that she feels better soon. She must be so worn out with all the tests and such. Lots of love and blessings to you. xxxx

It must be that the infection had not gotten strong enough to create the antibodies to make the test show positive. That would be my best guess, and you have more training than I do.

The human body is still a mystery and with all our scientific and medical breakthroughs, there are still a lot of stuff that science cannot explain. I would like to share the case of mother who is diagnosed with liver cancer right now. Since 1999 all her colonoscopy reports showed that she had rectal cancer but no liver cancer. Just this early december she got sick, at first we thought that it was her diabetes acting up. But she was complaining of stomach pain, so we had a CT scan made and a colonoscopy. The CT scan shows that her liver masses have grown, but what the doctors could not explain was for the rectal cancer because they could not find any traces, not even a polyp in her colon. Up to now we are still looking for answers, and I do hope and pray that your daughter gets well. Keep praying and hoping.

Just as an added note, my mom never had her rectal cancer treated. Hopefully, your daughter is fine by now.

I am so sorry to hear that my sweet lil sis is ill and that she has had such a long road to diagnosis! You have to tell her I am thinking of her and sending her love and hugs - you hear?
I am afraid though I don't really know what mono is - we probably have a different name for it here xxx

If a person develops fever it means that they have infection in their body. If I am right, according to your story your daughter had undergone many laboratory tests and it showed nothing. May be you can ask for a physician to perform an MRIs or CT scans. That is I believe can help to find out what is happening with your daughter. You can also always have the right to transfer your daughter to another hospital and ask for a second opinion, may be those test was not applicable because the problem is not there. What do you think?

This is a very odd situation. I would suggest to go to another doctor and get a 2nd opinion. Get all the tests and whatever they think is best. Make it known that she has been sick for a long time and something is wrong. Demand things. With you being an EMT and have a medical background it will help you with fighting for the care that she needs. I have never heard of mono taking so long to show up. Usually shows up pretty quick on the onset of the flu. Best of luck to you.

That's pretty weird! I'm sorry but I can't help you out on this one. My sister is a doctor and my brother is a RN but I myself have no medical background whatsoever. Its really hard to worry about something and you don't exactly know whats wrong. I just hope your daughter will be fine and that she'll get well soon.

We went through the exact same thing with my grandson a few months ago, then with his sister about a month later. The doctor told my daughter this is very common for some reason, often the test for mono will come up negative at first but he's been treating it for so long he knows what to expect. The best thing for your daughter now is to get plenty of rest and hopefully she'll be fine soon. My grandson couldn't play football for two weeks because his spleen was enlarged and if he were hit there it could have caused internal bleeding. I don't know if that always happened or if it was only in his case but I'd be careful with the physical activities she's involved in for a few weeks until she feels better and has another blood test. Hang in there, this is quite common for kids that age!
