Burned by returns

Have you been burned by a store's return policy this post-holiday season? I have! My mom bought my husband a mixer for like $45.00. I was with her when she got it. We weren't sure which kind to get him, but figured he could exchange it. Sure enough, he wanted the KitchenAid instead of the Sunbeam. Well, when we went to return it, Kohl's was out of pretty much EVERYTHING in that department. So, we came back another time. Still no stock. So we decided to just get a gift card and order the KitchenAid online. No fuss, no muss.
Except that without a receipt they would only give us "The lowest sale price in the last 30 days." We're not talking a mere $5 or so. It was like HALF what my mom paid for the thing! Ugh! What a scam! Put things on super duper after holiday sale so that people can't return stuff for what they're WORTH!

I can undertsand Kohl's only giving half. There is no way of knowing if the item was bought at their store as many many stores carry this product. Every store out there is always no receipt no rebate. If you don't have the receipt your pretty much screwed on that one. It's not the stores fault. If everyone returned things with no receipt (proof of purchase from their store) the company itself would be burned. Hence why prices go up. If they allowed this for you they would have to do it for everyone. It's not a scam. It's the company protecting themselves and you have to understand that.

That is terrible! I used to not believe in gift receipts but situations like the one you described make me a believer. I can honestly say the returns policy in Wal-Mart is the one thing they haven't managed to mess up yet. As long as you have some form of ID they will give you a return without your receipt.
Back to the subject situations like what you went through are why many people will not return an item. One of my aunt's will never return a thing because she is so used dealing with rude customer service and never getting her money back.

Good point about the gift receipt! I wish my mom had included that. My parents live about 4 hours away from us, so it's not like i can just swing by and get it from her. I also hate to point out it was the "wrong gift," by even asking her for it. Ugh!

I wouldn't call that a scam at all. You're actually very lucky that you were allowed to get anything without having the receipts. Most stores won't honor returns without having the receipt. You should always keep the receipt and check with the return policy whenever you buy something at a store, especially if you think there's a high chance of you returning it.

I hear what you're saying. And I may just wind up getting the receipt from my mom. I just thought it was kind of convenient of the store to say it had been on such a steep sale so recently. There were multiple different price tags in the little plastic sleeve, where the staff had not replaced the previous few prices of the item. None of them were as steeply discounted as the gal told us.

What we do is to order a gift receipt. That way if it is not working, or if they want to exchange it, they can get it for the same price. The price is on the gift receipt and besides with family, if they wree looking for something like that, they would know the price anyway. If not, keep the receipt yourself and give the receipt to them. Did you pay cash or charge? If you paid by credit card, you should have the credit card receipt and the number of the transaction. If not, you can complain to the store. They probably have a record of the transaction, they were too lazy to look it up.

That same thing happened to me with my daughter's perfume. The worst part is the clerk remembered me as I'd just bought it last minute and debated on whether to spend that sort of money on a lousy bottle of perfume. I did in the end only to find that her boyfriend got her the same thing. unfortunately in the hustle and bustle, i lost the reciept.
i got my other daughter a 40.00 pair of jeans at urban behavior and did have the sales reciept. She tried them on and wore them about the house for at the most...an hour. They were a bit shorter than she'd like and she really didn't like the fit. A couple of days later, we went to return them. OOPS...she had thrown away the tags and there was a small hole in the leg that could have well been there when we got them. 40.00 jeans should not be tearing out in such short wear under any circumstances and she was only trying them on with different tops etc! Needless to say, she is stuck with them.

I know the store is just tired of people saying they paid more than they really paid; however, I wasn't happy when the store didn't want to accept the item. They told me the item looked like it had been worn, but all I did was try it on. The store wanted to charge a restocking fee, so I really don't like Kohl's. Its not a deal to me when its so hard to return an item.
How was I suppose to know which top that I was given as a gift would fit the best without trying it on? That is the question I asked the woman at the store. The lady told me I should know my size. I demanded a manager and that is when I finally received a full refund from the receipt.
