i normally do chinese take-out places so basic selection there. If you every find a place with Chow-Fun...thats good. Also Wor Won Ton or Won Ton Min are good on cold days. Then there's the basic Manapua, Pork Hash, Half Moon which some places might have. The classic Beef Broccli and of course Char-Su is always good (BBQ Pork in some places)
I was born and raised in Hawaii with a lot of cultures influences there and Chinese food is some of my favorites as well as Japanese and Koren.

I love mushu anything! You can almost always find mushu pork, but many places also mushu chicken and beef.
I also like shredded pork - Peking style; its a pork dish with bamboo strips, green onions and ginger. Some places make it hot with red pepper flakes, but I don't do hot.... I also have them leave the ginger off, I'm a strange person.

We get terioki chicken, stir-fried vegetables, and house rice. I used to date a guy who would get war won ton soup. This was soup that was loaded with veggies and pieces of meat with the broth as well as a won ton.
Sometimes we just order house rice if the place puts all kinds of things in it including meat and sea food.
I like anything with eggs, so I used to order egg foo young.

My husband and I and my parents love the egg rolls and the egg drop soup. Also try sweet and sour pork. It's really good although I don't eat it anymore since becoming an almost vegetarian.... I eat some meat but not a lot. There's also the vegtable mixture too that's really good, can't think of the name of that though.

Items you could try
Most of these are my favorites.
Others are still pretty good dishes too.
Fried Rices (various combinations like shrimp, beef, pork, egg)
Mei Fun (rice noodles, and they too come in combinations)
Egg Drop Soup (a soup with egg yolk as part of the base and strand of egg white, try alone then with salt and pepper and a little soy sauce)
Tso's Chicken (Good tasting dish, usually with a type of sweetness but you can add salt or pepper yourself)
Fried or Steamed Dumplings (usually contains pork and bits of celery, sometimes it has pork and bits of shrimp but this is rarer)
Larger Pork/meatbuns (usually contains pork and celery. may contain shrimp filling instead)
Crab Rangoon (a fried type of crab stuffing in a specific breading, served with sauces on the side)
Lo Mein (fried noodles that are usually served with vegetables, its possible to get them alone or in another combination).
Seafood Combination (varies between restaurants, usually has imitation crab, fish, shrimp, onions; sometimes has baby squid or squid meat)
Sesame and Ginger Noodles (fried noodles but coated with a sesame oil mixture and seasoned with ginger. Slightly sweet taste)
Pork Mixture (fried pork with diced green and red peppers; some may make it hot)

Oh boy, I love everything Chinese! I really love the Egg Drop soup, especially on cold days. I love the spicy dishes, Coconut shrimp (sweet), General Tao chicken (spicy) and so much more.

I love chinese!
There are a lot of dishes I can advice you: for start try "shrimps clouds" (they are like white chips but made from shrimps) , spring rolls (rolls filled with vegetable) or shrimp wontons then for first dish rice with curry or fried rice. For second dish everything with chicken is fine, instead for dessert you HAVE to eat Deep-Fried Ice-cream (ice cream coverered with fried pastry). It's so delicious
