I watched this morning as parents dropped their 1 child off for school. They would leave the motor running and get out of their Navigator (SUV) gas guzzling pig of a vehical and leave the engine running while they walked their kids in! My car gets 40 mpg and I turn it off.Do you feel owners of these SUV's should have to pay a gas tax like they had with the larger cars in the early 80's???

Looks like you and I are tyhe only ones! lol I watch these owners of SUV's every morning taking their kids to school. MOST have 1 or 2 kids...stop the vehicle...and leave it running whil;e they take their kids in. Meanwhile the adverage Joes like us are driving smaller vehicals and conserving as our economy goes into the toilet!

no! and no I do not drive an SUV - but I do drive a van and sometimes I might be seen in it without any children in tow. Maybe these SUV drivers have a lot of hauling to do and need a big vehcile... maybe they have many children but can not afford to have 2 vehicles so even when they drop off one child they use what they have. maybe it is for their business. maybe it is no one elses business anyhow!
They are already paying ridiculous taxes on the gas, just like most everyone else who purchases it.

Depends what you class as an SUV we don't use that term in UK but my Land Rover Defender is a 4 x 4 and is the most environmentally friendly of vehicles. Don't believe the hype, hybrids, since they consume massive amounts of energy in their manufacture are an environmental hazard.
all the best urban

I know a lot of people who drive SUVS and when they drop their kids off at school, sometimes you see four or five kids, and when they go to an event, some have their children in the SUV plus a couple of ladies they have also picked up. Also some of them use them for business, etc. So I would not feel it is fair for these people to pay a gas tax. I do think that people should turn off the engines unless of course it is cold and there is snowing outside.
Then again where I live, no one who has just one or two child has an SUV unless he or she needs it for his business.

WOW...where do you live? I have lived in NJ,WI and now MN and in all 3 the school parking lot was teaming with them! When I was a teen I drove a huge gas guzzler and had to pay a tax. I understood and accepted it.

I don't remember a gas tax on larger vehicles in the 80-s at all? there was one? How and who would decide who really needs the larger vehicle as opposed to those that are just waisting gas. Also if they tax larger vehicles, we have to remember that many of the larger vehicles are what delivers our products to stores and our kids to school. If they have to have a gas tax then that cost is just going to be bumped back to us in higher property taxes and the cost of products going up.

I have a hybrid and love it. No I don't think that SUVs should pay more - in fact they already do because they burn more gas so spend more time visiting the gas station, paying more dollars to fill up. But I do think that we have to use the World's gas resources carefully. Maybe we should all walk more, or perhaps towns need to improve their public transport. Here in the UK, we have started charging drivers to go into London £8 ($16) per day with crippling fines if you don't pay, and other cities are looking at doing something similar. Hybrids are exempt (whoopee).

I don't think that people should pay a gas tax just because they own an suv because it isn't fair that they have to pay more than other people just because of the vehicle they own.It will also hurt the market cause people will choose not to buy that kind of vehicle anymore and that would hurt the car dealerships which in turn will hurt the market.
