It's There not Their!

My oldest daughter undoubtedly will misuse this word every time. Last week when she used it in an instant message, I told her that she was using the wrong word. She said everyone spells it that way! I said, I don't. And I don't know anyone else that uses the wrong word. Which leads me to thinking of other words that I see misused here at Mylot and elsewhere. One that I see often is web "site" spelled sight. Sight is what you see. Site is a place. Another one that I am recalling that I see is "have" spelled half. Have is to own. Half is a portion of something. This is all I can recall at the moment. Is there any that you know of that the word is used wrong? Please share it here and let's see how many there are!

I am adding this to the 1st discussion now, because I am still seeing the mistake of there and their. A trick to help people know which one to use. The "i" in "their" shows ownership.

I suppose saying where instead of were or saying were instead of wear. Another one is whose instead of who's, dessert instead of desert, lye instead of lie, week instead of weak, waist instead of waste, oh and the sight instead of site, plus weight instead of wait. Oh yes and my favorite of all times, the their instead of there.

hmm...off the top of my head, i can't think of any and I have not seen the words you mentioned misused to any great extent. I have a teen here that uses spell check and always asks me to spell words for her so as to get them right. Out of 4, I do have one girl that struggles and still she does try to get it right. she is not okay with spelling things wrong or using wrong english. I

At least there is spell check that helps with some that choose to use it! And good for your one that struggles, will try to get it right.

How about to and too. I do that a lot. I miss the second o. A lot of people do not capitalize the letter i when they are referring to themselves as I. Shalom~Adoniah

I don't see the wrong word being used as often as I see simple words being misspelled. Like AGAIN spelled agian...or WEIRD spelled wierd. One thing I don't see on this site that I am thankful for every day is the annoying TyPiNg LiKe ThIs.

sixpauleleven: I have to agree with you, if they want to communicate amongst themselves like that is one thing, but to communicate in general like that is uncalled for. I do think grammar and spelling has gone out the window with the younger people.

You'd want to shoot my neighbor's kid. She sent me an email on her mother's behalf that was a page and a half long and It WaS tYpEd JuSt LiKe ThIs. ThAt KiD hAd To HaVe SaT tHeRe FoR aN hOuR tYpInG oUt HoW hEr GrAnDfAtHeR wAs DoInG aFtEr HiS sUrGeRy. It took me longer than that to read it and to decipher the slang she threw in. Do kids not care about proper spelling/grammar anymore? I know with the invention of text messages and IMs, it doesn't matter, but when you're having a conversation with a grown adult, act like one. Otherwise it just makes you look ignorant.

I am sure from time to time I have been known to misuse a word in here or via a Text message or something. I might have done it from time to time not knowing and at other times not knowing I did so, or too tired to notice as well. I know it bothers me when I see people who are constantly doing this as well, but since there is no SPELL CHECK for this type of thing here, it is bound to keep on happening for sure.

If you use firefox, it underlines words that are spelled wrong. Though I tend to use IE more than firefox.

Alos: Your and you're (you are) I've noticed those too. I reread my responses in case I accidentally make a mistake. I had so much English I can't help but try to make sure I use the knowledge I still have in my head. : )

I added the Alos at the last minute, right after I finished checking the rest of the discussion, LOL. I meant ALSO. But since we are on this topic, I cannot tell you how many people I see who spell grammar with an 'e', as grammer. It's grammar, no matter where people live.

I think we can blame computers with spell check for the decline in our spelling ability. Now you just type it up, run spell check and it's done. Trouble is spell check doesn't pick up this kind of error and because we don't drag out the dictionary and look it up we don't remember the spelling. I am often amazed at how badly really intelligent people spell. It is a lost art I think. Kiss it goodbye and spell everything the way sounds. lol

bhappy2: I know I use to be a good speller, but there are some words I really have to stop and think about how to spell them. Mooch: Yes, I know this SITE even has spell check if you use Firefox browser. But I don't think it has a grammar check on it. But you are correct with cell phones kids are always texting and shortening words for this reason. My youngest daughter gave my mom a card last week, and she used the texting version in her writing in the card!

What I can't stand are the people who talk "gangster". Since it's the internet, I can understand typos and grammar errors, since it's not like we're proofreading or anything(it's like how grammar doesn't matter in casual conversation). But people who intentionally misspell words just make me completely disregard anything they have to say. When I see anything with words like: lyke, dat, mi, gunna, I just assume they are kids who want to look cool with slang, and I actually don't take their post seriously.

WOW!! You have definately hit my pet peeve spot! Too often people are in such a hurry to write things they tend to not read over what they have written. Right and write is very often misused. As well as your and you're. Internet chats and IM's have made it to where people are even to lazy to add two more letters to u.. you.. it's not that hard to add two more strokes on the keyboard! I guess this is where fast society is headed!

Yes, it is probably one of my biggest pet peeves when words are not spelled correctly or used in the wrong context. And I do fault IM and texting to be the fault of this as well.

there their and they're your and you're to and too (not so much two) lose and loose its and it's and another one I can't think of just now... Misused all the time. And by really smart educated people too! Some folks just don't have the patience or the memory for that kind of detail. Or it's not important to them, I guess.

This is a very common occurence, (occurance?) one that as a writer absolutely drives me crazy. The thing is you can correct people and they really just do not care! I mean they really don't care. One of the issues I see with my students is that they mispronounce words and therefore are unable to spell or even guess at a phonetic spelling. They are also lazy and want you to "help" or do everything for them. I actually teach enrichment but we have class activities that help develop life skills, communication and literacy. Some days I just can't take it and adults are worse. You can subtly and politely call something to their attention and the response is "well you knew what I meant!"

Your/you're It's one of my pet peeves. I hate it when I see something spelled wrong. "What would you do if you're son came home early" or "Say your going on a trip" AAAHHH!!! Learn to spell. Also, to/too/two are three different words with three different meanings. "There are too jugs of milk there" is NOT an acceptable sentence. I can't stand "teen slang." I have a friend who has a teen daughter and that child TyPeS LiKe ThIs and spells lyke dis baybee gurl ober there who is so CrUnK. WTF is crunk? And what is an ober?

Also, using apostrophies that are not needed. "The cat's water bowl is empty" is a correct form. "Hog's Stun LSU" is not. Neither is "My squid's over there." There is no 's unless it's possessive or plural. Also, I did a survey at www.cashcrate.com and the actual site stated "No PO Box's"

Ack. Apostrophes. I can't type today.

I left out a word which makes that sentence uncorrect. But I'll just make up a new sentence. "The car key's are on the shelf's over there." I used to work with a police chief who typed out his memo's (sic) like that and had horrible spelling.
