I have never had an official aroma therapy treatment, but I understand stimulating the sense of smell in other areas.
People use scents - aromas - in many ways. Personally I sometimes light a scented candle or burn incense to help create an atmosphere or set a mood, for just myself and for company. The aromas of cooking food and baking are comforting and relaxing, and act to stimulate the digestive process. Other smells act to warn us of dangers.
Not being a student of the principles of aroma therapy I do not know what a practitioner hopes to accomplish or how they actually go about it. I doubt I will ever utilize the services of an aroma therapist unless it were to be part of a massage therapy session.

I think to an extent it can help ease various discomforts, and support other remedies/therapies that you would use for treatment. Lavender for example is very soothing and can help ease a headache while you wait for the Tylnol to kick in. The best example I can think of to show you that aromatherapy does something- are you a coffee drinker? When you smell the coffee first thing in the morning, doesn't it perk you up a little bit even though you haven't drank any yet? Your mind associates certain scents with certain reactions.

I have been under this therapy, I love the smell of oils which I use and put them on my burner to produce sweet scent that is so relaxing. The scent of camomile makes me feel at ease, for that's what I mostly use. rose hip oil and jasmine are the other two fragrances we have, they are also relaxing and can relieve stress.
Using them or can be I believe, for I am always in peace whenever I try to relax..

I think from what I read in aromatherapy books, websites and my personal experience aromatherapy is quite effective for certain conditions. I personally use it to help wake up. Christmas 2006 one of my gifts was a floral potpouri with dried roses. I sniffed it first thing in the morning so I could literally stop and smell the roses. Roses are a natural mood uplifter. So is lavender. This herb is a relaxant, nervine too. Now a days I take a whiff of cinnamon. It relaxes me yet makes me more alert. I love its spicy smell. The same with ginger. Peppermint, for that matter, most mints energize me. There are many other fragrances too numerous to mention. Basically aromatherapy can uplift, stimulate and energize. Well that's my experience on this matter. Aromatherapy is useful but is not a cureall.
