I see so many people out there who receive social security, and have to wonder how and why they are receiving benefits. I do understand there are people who really and truly need it. But then there are those who just keep applying for disability benefits, and they are unable to work-but yet they are turned down. What is your opinions on the Social Security System? Why do you feel that some people get turned down and some don't?

I know of someone who gets SSI for their children. The children were eligible because they were Special Education students as far as she had said. It took her months to get approved and they had given her 6 months of back pay. She went and bought a car for herself with that back pay. She never paid for any extra tutors or things her kids might need to do better in school.

This here is a classic example of what upsets me sometimes. I see people who receive SSI for their children, but their children dont' see a penny of that money. If it is to benefit their children, then use it for the sake of the children--whether it be to clothe and feed them, education, or to help pay for medical care. I really find it in distaste when someone uses it for the benefit of themselves...

The shame is that some need special education and maybe even soc security. Both systems were put in place to help those who live with real disabilities. But getting soc sec for being a lazy student or one who places no value on education is unacceptable. People are abusing special education and ruining our public schools, no one wins, not the regular ed kids or the real special needs kids. Then, after they do all the damage they can do in schools, they "graduate" and move on the drain the soc sec system. God help us all. Of course, if the rest of us are willing to work a lot harder just so the losers and deadbests can coast, then maybe we deserve to go through life carrying their lazy carcasses. With the economy sinking further everyday, the undeserving loads will be the first to be scraped off the tax payers backs.

It really irritates me when I see people who are scamming the system and living off all of us hard working people just because they don't want to work.

I am one of those people who has been trying to receive it and has been turned down 3 times now, I to see these people that receive it and you wonder, sure there are people that you cannot tell by looking that they have a form of disbilty, but then there are the ones, some of which I know personally that receive it for themselves, there children, and there adult brothers and children. Kind of makes you wonder.......

Illegal aliens are banned from recieving SSI; as of April 1, 2009 an applicant has to show proof of citizenship such as a birth certificate or passport. Drivers' licenses don't qualify as proof anymore.

Yes. I actually have a relative that is collecting disability and there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with her. She's a liar and a hypochondriac. She was turned down over and over for SS Disability and she finally got a lawyer and sued and was able to get it. I think they must just go ahead and give it to people who get a lawyer rather than fighting it because it's so expensive to fight it. I also had a neighbor once who was on disability - he was only in his 30s, had falled from a telephone pole on the job and refused to be retrained for an office job. So he sat at home and did nothing - saying that he couldn't work because he was in so much pain. But he still managed to climb up on the roof of his house every Christmas to decorate and he managed to remodel his house with no help at all. Seems to me SS should have told him he either could accept retraining or starve. And if he could do heavy remodeling on his house, he could surely work an 8 hour day.

It really upsets me that this is so common in the United States. I read a story somewhere ( I think Readers Digest) about a woman who filed for disability/ssi and talked about how much she was in pain and couldn't drive, work, and it hurt so much to even sit sometimes. Then it turned out she entered pagents and won them...won money in those--doing a DANCE routine in the talent portion, while in the meantime, collecting SSI.... Well the goverment FINALLY caught in, and she's been repaying them back so much a month, but she collected just thousands of dollars in SSI... It hurts when I see people who are in pain, can't work--but have trouble filing. And then those, who are just lazy-but they receive it. These things will never make sense to me.

This is perfectly fine to receive it if you do have a disability. But I find those who just don't really want to work, and find a way to "work the system." And they are perfectly capable of working. I just see so many other people with medical problems, and they just keep getting turned down. It just frustrates me sometimes.

I know there are those who abuse the system. I have an in-law right now who is trying to get on disability . He is 26,has been to college, and wieghs in excess of 450 lbs. He has had a couple of jobs in the past but decided that he shouldn't have to work. His claim is that he is too heavy and he does have trouble with his legs. He has had at least 2 different doctors tell him that the only thing wrong with him is that he needs to lose weight, and one of those doctors usually helps people get disability. He refuses to lose weight because he thinks if he does then he won't be qualified. He regularly eats fast foods and orders huge meals. He will eat more in one meal than I would eat in about 3 days, and I like to eat. His entire life centers around a computer game called Everquest and just about all he does is play that game. He has got the idea somehow everyone should pay his way. His live -in girlfriend is on SSI that she first got while she was in foster care. She is claiming several problems, bipolar being one of them. She also has a paper stating that she is mentally ill which she is very proud of. My experience with her is that I believe that she is basicly a spoiled brat. If someone makes her mad, her boyfriend takes her shopping and suddenly she is all better. I think that she is playing games. Both of these people have lives with us on 2 seperate occasions, so I have seen firsthand how she is and frankly, I don't buy it. Before anyone jumps on me, I am speaking of this one individual only who I personally know and have been able to observe. I am disabled. I have a condition called degenerative disc desease. As near as I can determine it is a form of arthritis that erodes the discs in your back and allows the bones in your spine to grate together. It began in my lower back and is moving up through my neck and across my ribs. Sometimes it becomes difficult to breathe because of this. I don't drive, I can't stand for more than 5 or 10 minutes, and the only time I leave the apartment is for something that requires my presence, such as a doctor's appointment. I don't go shopping at all. The last time I tried, I was with my mother and she had to finish for me while I found a place to sit. I felt terrible that I was 49 and my nearly 70 year mother had to do my shopping. So I am pretty much housebound. Social Security is setup under it's own set of rules and guidelines. They do not go by what your doctors say's is wrong with you. For example, my doctor rated me at 100% disabled. That wasn't good enough. They look at your age, your education, and your retrainability. They also look at whether there is any job that you are qualified to do, and it doesn't matter if it is in your local area or not. It took me 2 denials before I was finally approved and then it was because of my age, and not my condition. If I would have had a college education I would never have qualified. And this was with me having worked for the last 30 years. The reason it is so hard for people who really need Disabilty to get it is simply because there are so many that try to cheat the system. They have these checks and balances put in place to try to weed them out. Even so, there are still those who manage to slip by. No system is perfect and someone will always find a way. It just makes it harder for everyone else who really need it. If you are claiming a mental illness or something of that nature it seems to be a lot easier to get approved than it is if you are claiming a physical problem.

You really nailed the problem on the head. You need ssi and people who abuse the system make it hard for those who need it to get it. I also have degen disc disease as well as arthritus in most of my joints. It's very painful and I had to quit my job in construction, which I did for almost 30 years. I worked very hard and long hours. After several surgeries, I retrained for a new job. I worked the whole time, retraining at night on my own time and my own dime. It was hard and I took a cut in pay but I wanted to save soc sec for my old age. I'm happy you get in because you need it. I'm happy I found a way to retrain because that's how it's supposed to work. I'm lucky too because with hard work and effort, I can postpone soc sec, hopefully until I'm 67. But if my luck doesn't hold out like yours didn't, I'd like to know the safety net is there. That's why I don't abuse soc sec. The other people you mentioned, or at least one of them, is part of the shame of this country. The only people worse are the greedy grabbing lawyers who are just highly trained criminials who drain the blood out of hard working people.

Personally it depends on who you know, and where you live, and how can you abuse and work the system? There are often times you see a lot of people you know who are getting some form of Disability, SSI, etc. and it makes you wonder how as they really are not disabled, and then you see someone really needing the help, but because they might be Married, or in a harder to get SSI state, they seem to have to suffer. I am someone due to being Married cannot get any help, even with Medical bills. I have a Chronic wound that does not want to heal, and due to the lack of trained doctors, and my Medical coverage they really cannot do anything. (But if I was single and not working, the state would pay it.) Personally as a Tax payer, I think this is wrong, but who am I to say. I have always said they need to really put people thru Stress tests, and aptitude tests before offering complete disability unless they have problems like Cancer, Diabetes, Blind, In Wheelchair, Mentally retarded, or just obvious they need help for sure. Would solve a lot of problems out there for sure.

Herro ariana99 I don't know the reason for savings, unless if you have that much in savings, you don't need disability income. I have no other thought on the subject. As to it taking so long to approve and frequently an atty, time could be due to manning. My case took 4mo to approve. I was approved the first application because I had extensive documentation and a condition that is usually automatically approved. I have a friend who I believe qualifies, yet she has been disapproved 3 times. She is waiting for a court date now. I am hopeful that the judge will see her disability and approve her benefits. Even with benefits she doesn't get medical (Medicare) for 2yrs. Prosperous mylotting

I am fed up with people who can fool SSI administration and can get all the benifits. When the people who actually need it have to fight and fight, ending up getting the minimum.

I definitely know a few people who are abusing the system. They just see it as a regular benefit for doing nothing. When in fact there are others out there more deserving of the help. I don't know how some people get granted, and some turned down, but it's frustrating to see when people abuse it.
