I agree - read books. There are several websites who offer ways to learn and improve english for free. If you are interested I will check my links to see if I still have some of those links in my bookmark-list. Besides that the internet can help you a lot. My english isn't very good either but I dare to say that my english is much better since I use it. What is 12 years now. Holy sh.. can you believe that it's been so long? I remember the time very well when there were mostly only english-written-sites. There were only few in my mother tongue... Keep surfing on english-sites, check words if you don't understand something, that's the best way to learn. May go on your nerves if you have to look 5 times for one sentence but ey... ;)

I spent a few months studying in the Netherlands. I noticed that most Dutch people speak excellent English, and can read and write English to a very high standard. This is because they watch much television and movies that are in English. They read English books and magazines. You could try having an English speaking pen friend or taking English conversation classes. My lot is all written in English because it is an American site so it is good that you belong to it as well. You might like to take a holiday to an English speaking country, like the UK, Ireland, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Canada or the USA. Good luck.

Well adding up to the points above i would like to tell that you need to have a passion and a love for the language..and involve English in anything you do like start thinking in English this may sound funny but I do think in English many times and English becomes easy and you get used to it..Its only 'thought' that I feel a barrier with English makes you feel lost in English .

Well mylot can help you on that part, just continue engaging members here by using the english language through reading. Or you can also read english books, dictionary, news and articles and even watch or listen to english programs. Personally, I would also try using some of that english language through conversing with friends and other people who are fluent for that matter..

Hello coolfish.. I think your english is good.. My English is not really good too, maybe because it is not my mother tongue but I even not really good at my own language..hehehe.. Mylot here is a good way to learn english too by response and posting a discussion. The other way that I ussually do is watching DVD's without using the subtitle. So you'll try to understand the story. Sometimes I watch movies that I like many many times to understand better about the story and help me with my english too.. Good Luck to you coolfish...

Hi coolfish85, The best way to improve English is to read English News Paper everyday, Knowing the meaning with the help of a English Dictionary and also read English Magazines and watch english movies. Follow this method regularly and you can see the difference within six months. Good Luck.

Well, your sentences seem like you don't have many problems! Only mistake I noticed was where you said my instead of me. Ways to use the words? I didn't think there was anyone else like me. My usually shows ownership....like MY hair is brown. I still think you did a good job with trying. I would tell you to go to places like myspace and youtube and watch some of the movies and videos on there. Something else you can do is get yahoo messenger and get a headset with a microphone and you could talk to alot of people. Just be careful out there!

first, what english is it you would like to improve on? is it american english or the brit's english? i have some flaws in english too. what i usually do is to watch some movies and try to listen attentively to how they say it. if something catches your attention -- jot it down and try to look for ways on how u can use it in everyday life. another thing that would surely help you is by reading. it widens your vocabulary and give u a clear syntax of sentence construction. lastly, USE it -- if you use it, you are already practicing it. practice makes perfect. use it in mylot! or when chatting!

Hi Coolfish,There are already some good suggestions out there to get started. I teach English myself and here are some tips I give to my students. - when reading articles or books in English, don't try and understand every single word. The most important thing is to get a general understanding of the text. - once you have understood what the text is about, then you can go back and try and work out what some of the words mean. - if there are still some words left that you haven't been able to work out, then use a dictionary, but not one that gives you the word in your language! If you do that, you will forget the word very quickly and you will have to look it up again two pages later;) I suggest you find an learners English dictionary that will explain the word simply and even use pictures, that way you will know what the word means in English and not just the translation. - try summarising the text and use some of those new words. Finally, don't be too hard on yourself:) it sounds like your English is good enough to communicate. Give yourself realistic goals, short articles or books which are fun to read (like crime novels, adventures etc). Best of luck Stef

I didn't think the way you do (my English being poor) until... I read Reader's Digest. Oh my you gotta love the guessing game I played each time I encountered a new word. And there was that "Enrich your vocabulary" section in each edition, I honestly didn't score very well there.

You keep writing (posting discussions and responses) and by keep reading you can make note of some good idioms and phrases, thereby you can develop your vocabulary and that is how one can learn language. Your english is not very bad at all. Keep it up. All the best.
