Big dogs or little dogs, which do you prefer?

I have two big dogs and one little dog. I've always said that I hate little dogs until my husband moved here with his little dogs. I took some time for the big dogs to get used to the little ones biting them and not being allowed to bite back but, now they get along just fine. One of the little dogs died of old age last year and the other one is on her last leg. My husband says that when she goes, we are getting another big dog because he prefers my big dogs.
Which do you prefer?

I prefer large dogs as they are gentler, calmer and more docile. small breeds tend to be from terrier stock.
also, large dogs are better to cuddle as you can really get your arms around them and give them a big squeeze.
we have a lurcher and a deerhound, and I grew up with a German Shepherd and a Great Dane.

You are so right about that Galena. I've never heard of a lurcher. I'm going to have to look it up.

I looked it up and got tons of pictures. They are so sweet looking! Here is the information I got: The Lurcher is not considered a purebred dog. Normally, one of the parents is a member of the Greyhound family. It is assumed that this type of dog was developed because in the past, in England only noble blood was allowed to own a Greyhound or any other sighthound. This cross produced a sound hunting companion for the commoners. The Lurcher is generally an obedient dog making it an excellent coursing hound, hunter and companion.

I prefer big dogs but hubby prefers little dogs. However, we actually have a life style that does not work well with any dogs, or cats either. I am more of a cat person, but grew up with all sorts of animals, a wonderful dog, many cats, even goats, ducks, and rabbits. The only farm animals I don't like are chickens, but we love to eat them and their yummy eggs, too.

We used to have chickens. The kind that layed the green eggs (Americana). I finally gave up on owning them because they kept getting killed by the fox out here. Here's a picture of a green egg.

I prefer large dogs, i have a Great Den named Leo, the smaller ones are just show peices, useful for nothing,
while having Leo in my frontyard, no one dares even to passby

I know what you mean. My big dogs are very protective and people who don't know them, are afraid of them.

We have a little dog and I am glad he's little. My son has a great big doggy that is part black lab and part rotweiler. He's way too big to be in the house but he is in the house a lot. He bumps into everthing but my son doesn't mind. He doesn't care if the dog breaks anything.
I on the other hand, like my little doggy because he is so small he wouldn't bump into anything or break anything. It's also easier to take him somewhere in the car than a big dog would be.

My big dogs don't break anything. They even listen very well when I want them to get out of the way. I can say "out of the kitchen" in a whisper and they will go to the living room.

I love medium/big dogs. I have a medium sized dog and she's lovely. Big dogs are so nice to hug and I know I won't step on them accidently cos they are easy to spot.
And they look more dominant than the smaller dogs, makes me feel a little more protected.

I love all sizes of dogs! I have three, two are in the 35 pound range and one weighs 20 pounds. My friend Jannette has five dogs in her house, and three of them are huge! One is a lab puppy, so he's getting there, and one is a chubby little beagle. She has a Great Dane who is enormous and likes to sit on my lap! The darn thing outweighs me and I can't breathe when he sits on me, but he's such a sweetheart!

I've always preferred little dogs but there's nothing wrong with big dogs. It really depends on what you want one for. If it's to be an indoor dog then a little one is probably more suitable. If you want it for guarding outside then a larger one would probably be better.

Hello girlgonefishing. I prefer little dogs because they are cute, cuddly and easy to handle. My sister once owned a big dog. I was terrified of it for it might bite me or pounce on me. Little dogs are usually easy to handle and you can bring them anywhere. You can even put them in bags for small dogs.

Well, you are right about the bags. I just got a vision of me trying to carry my 100 pound dog around in a bag!

Twice in my life I have been bitten by little dogs. Not a pleasant experience. My preference is for larger dogs. My Sophie is 42 pounds. She would be listed in the medium sized catagory. I think that larger dog provides a sense of security. Besides I like a dog you can wrap your arms around. A big hug makes the day nice.

I love big dogs. Give me a german shepherd or doberman anytime. An ex-girlfriend of mine had a chihuahua and it annoyed the sh*t out of me. It would bark all day long and sleep in the bed between us...LOL..it would never let me sleep in peace (or anything else)!!! LOL

I know what you mean. My husbands little dogs used to sleep with us. I finally had to put my foot down because I wasn't getting any sleep in fear of kicking one of the little fur balls off the bed! LOL
